Title: GDC: PS3 is Region Free for gaming.
Post by: schild on March 23, 2006, 04:12:19 AM
Stock up on those crazy japanese games, kids. I know I am and uh, I'm alone on this, aren't I?

Originally from IGN, I can't bear to link there. DISCUSS.

Here's a non-IGN link:

It doesn't really affect non-Japanese speaking US customers but I'm sure the English-speaking Europeans are happy at the news (assuming US games including PAL/SECAM support).

PS: why isn't this in the Game Conferences forum?

PS3 games might still have region lockout but it's up to the publishers to decide that.

Q&A with SCE President Phil Harrison (http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id=12205) who gave the keynote:

We also learned that software would be region-free until the developer chooses which regions to support or lockout. The storage of Blu-Ray allows for developers to put all their regions onto one disc, and it's up to their discretion.

So it would seem. I bet EA locks out by region. Can't have Americans playing Cricket or Croquet 2008.

I still don't get that.  Why people would actively limit their market share.

It also keeps the region retailers happy.
