To be honest, I was just waiting for this one. Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: HaemishM on March 14, 2006, 08:02:00 AM Hmmm, a Scientologist with a sandy vagina about religions. Who'da thunk it?
Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: tazelbain on March 14, 2006, 08:07:44 AM Good for them. Hayes wasn't doing much for them lately. He goes in blaze of minor controversy and people are reminded that South Park still on the air.
Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: Ironwood on March 14, 2006, 08:40:15 AM Hmmm, a Scientologist with a sandy vagina about religions. Who'da thunk it? Here's the thing : You don't understand the history of Sandy Vaginas. I do. (That would make a great Bond name....) Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: HaemishM on March 14, 2006, 08:58:51 AM You're a beach cunt then are ye?
Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: WayAbvPar on March 14, 2006, 09:14:11 AM I hope they dedicate an entire season to mocking Scientology.
Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: Llava on March 14, 2006, 10:07:06 AM Quote The show sparked another religious row recently when an episode entitled Bloody Mary depicted a bleeding statue of the Virgin Mary. Um. An ANALLY bleeding statue of the Virgin Mary. Kind of an important distinction there. The thing was farting blood all over people. It was gross, but funny. Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: Paelos on March 14, 2006, 11:00:08 AM South Park used to be funny until they tried to make every show have some sort of scapegoat or agenda. I mean making fun of things is good which it's clever, but a good percentage of the later stuff seems to rely more on shock humor than actual creativity. Moments of gold are in there for sure, but anybody can blatantly disrespect something and try to pass it off as funny. It really doesn't take much thought.
Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: Samwise on March 14, 2006, 11:49:24 AM I agree, but the Scientology episode was pretty damn solid. It was the least hyperbolic treatment of a religion they've ever done, which I think is why they felt obliged to flash "THIS IS WHAT SCIENTOLOGISTS ACTUALLY BELIEVE" on the screen while they talked about the Xenu incident - it'd be easy to confuse that stuff with the Gilgameks, giant spiders, and holographic Moses sort of thing that tends to accompany their treatment of other religions.
Maybe that's why the Scientologists got so pissed off about it. Theirs is the only religion that could be presented as-is and pass for comedy. Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: Yegolev on March 14, 2006, 12:24:15 PM Maybe that's why the Scientologists got so pissed off about it. Theirs is the only religion that could be presented as-is and pass for comedy. Probably true, but also consider they are rather touchy and litigious. I think any mention of Scientology that wasn't claiming it was super-duper would make them angry. And I mean angry in the way that the lawyer advertising on the bus stop bench is angry that you were injured in an accident. The article also failed to mention Clooney portrayed a homosexual pet dog. What is journalism coming to? Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: Furiously on March 14, 2006, 12:41:08 PM The article also failed to mention Clooney portrayed a homosexual pet dog. What is journalism coming to? That's Acadamy Award Winner, Sexiest Man Alive George Clooney. Wasn't the story of Joseph Smith that they presented pretty much as-is (despite the lampooning)? Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: WayAbvPar on March 14, 2006, 01:21:52 PM Dum dum dum dum dum dum dum!

Uh, I mean Latter Day Saints... ish... people. Kooky or not, the kid is right at the end: they are happy and nice, so who cares? Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: Ironwood on March 14, 2006, 03:09:53 PM but anybody can blatantly disrespect something and try to pass it off as funny. Yes. And it WILL be funny to some people. What's your point ? Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: Paelos on March 14, 2006, 03:34:30 PM but anybody can blatantly disrespect something and try to pass it off as funny. Yes. And it WILL be funny to some people. What's your point ? My point is the shift in the show from clever to shock. It's pandering. Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: Shockeye on March 14, 2006, 06:47:52 PM The article also failed to mention Clooney portrayed a homosexual pet dog. What is journalism coming to? Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: Lantyssa on March 14, 2006, 08:14:36 PM The show has been about shock since day one.
Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: Gutboy Barrelhouse on March 14, 2006, 10:00:17 PM Poking fun at a religion created by a Science Fiction author (who was probably high at the time) in the 50s isn't bigotry...it's obligatory.
Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: tar on March 15, 2006, 02:33:26 AM Apparently this episode of south park wasn't/won't be aired in the UK. Operation Clambake have hosted it here (XviD .avi) (http://www.xenu.net/archive/media/Vault/South.Park.S09E12.DSR.XviD-XOR.avi), I believe with full permission of the creators.
Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: Ironwood on March 15, 2006, 03:27:23 AM What was the reasoning behind that ?
Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: tar on March 15, 2006, 03:35:46 AM No real idea. Picked up the link on some other forum yesterday, probably qt3. I think someone talked about fear of legal troubles but I didn't really look into it. Downloaded the ep and watched it, got funny for a bit about halfway through. The rest was kinda 'meh'.
*edit* It was this thread (http://www.quartertothree.com/game-talk/showthread.php?s=147640af81c1eadf189c45367a1e6293&t=24454) Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: schild on March 15, 2006, 04:04:59 AM This is where Shockeye comes in and tells us Jason Lee is a scientologist and I go apeshit.
That's the best SP episode I've seen btw. Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: Furiously on March 15, 2006, 07:35:48 AM The article also failed to mention Clooney portrayed a homosexual pet dog. Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: Yegolev on March 15, 2006, 12:40:33 PM By default, or by definition?

Clooney's agent was so desparate to get Clooney on the show that he offered to do anything. The South Park boys thought nothing would be funnier than having the biggest drawcard in hollywood in a non-speaking, but barking, role. And so George as Sparky was born. Seinfeld was offered the part of "Turkey #2" in the first Thanksgiving episode. He declined. Clonney 1, Seinfeld 0, IMO. This is the Scientology South Park episode, the full deal. Apparenlty it was pulled, though supposedly it wasn't because of Cruise. It's funny as shit, even more so because the story they tell about Scientology's beliefs and methods IS ACTUALLY WHAT THEY BELIEVE. Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: Strazos on March 17, 2006, 02:01:57 PM Someone pwned your thread Haemcow.

Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: Murgos on March 18, 2006, 06:28:32 AM Quote "So, Scientology, you may have won THIS battle, but the million-year war for earth has just begun!" the "South Park" creators said in a statement Friday in Daily Variety. "Temporarily anozinizing our episode will NOT stop us from keeping Thetans forever trapped in your pitiful man-bodies... You have obstructed us for now, but your feeble bid to save humanity will fail!" Awesome. Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: Roac on March 18, 2006, 03:26:42 PM I liked it better when Jews ran Hollywood.
Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: Ironwood on March 20, 2006, 01:14:58 AM Indeed. At least the Jews are sane. Well, most of 'em.
Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: schild on March 20, 2006, 08:14:23 AM My people are doing their best. Not to matter, in 10 years the scientologists will have gotten rid of themselves in some sort of ritual sacrifice. And by ritual sacrifice, I mean killing spree. And by killing spree, I mean Russel Crowe just snaps.

YOU BASTARDS! Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: Llava on March 23, 2006, 01:05:23 AM That episode... was pretty harsh.
Funny, but harsh. Then touching. Then harsh. I'm confused. Title: Re: Hypocrisy Abounds Post by: Signe on March 23, 2006, 07:41:43 AM Geez, they really got back at Chef, didn't they?
