It was gross, but funny.

South Park used to be funny until they tried to make every show have some sort of scapegoat or agenda. I mean making fun of things is good which it's clever, but a good percentage of the later stuff seems to rely more on shock humor than actual creativity. Moments of gold are in there for sure, but anybody can blatantly disrespect something and try to pass it off as funny. It really doesn't take much thought.

I agree, but the Scientology episode was pretty damn solid.  It was the least hyperbolic treatment of a religion they've ever done, which I think is why they felt obliged to flash "THIS IS WHAT SCIENTOLOGISTS ACTUALLY BELIEVE" on the screen while they talked about the Xenu incident - it'd be easy to confuse that stuff with the Gilgameks, giant spiders, and holographic Moses sort of thing that tends to accompany their treatment of other religions.

Maybe that's why the Scientologists got so pissed off about it.  Theirs is the only religion that could be presented as-is and pass for comedy.

Probably true, but also consider they are rather touchy and litigious.  I think any mention of Scientology that wasn't claiming it was super-duper would make them angry.  And I mean angry in the way that the lawyer advertising on the bus stop bench is angry that you were injured in an accident.

The article also failed to mention Clooney portrayed a homosexual pet dog.  What is journalism coming to?

The Mormon episode was pretty funny.  Wasn't the story of Joseph Smith that they presented pretty much as-is (despite the lampooning)?

Poking fun at a religion created by a Science Fiction author (who was probably high at the time) in the 50s isn't bigotry...it's obligatory.

No real idea. Picked up the link on some other forum yesterday, probably qt3. I think someone talked about fear of legal troubles but I didn't really look into it. Downloaded the ep and watched it, got funny for a bit about halfway through. The rest was kinda 'meh'.

Clooney's agent was so desparate to get Clooney on the show that he offered to do anything.  The South Park boys thought nothing would be funnier than having the biggest drawcard in hollywood in a non-speaking, but barking, role.  And so George as Sparky was born.

This is the Scientology South Park episode, the full deal. Apparenlty it was pulled, though supposedly it wasn't because of Cruise. It's funny as shit, even more so because the story they tell about Scientology's beliefs and methods IS ACTUALLY WHAT THEY BELIEVE.
