A few months ago, the Cartoon Network decided to show Batman.  I'm talking about the Batman movie directed by Tim Burton starring Michael Keaton.

Now, I don't dislike this movie.  I think it's not a great Batman movie, but whatever, that's beside the point.  It's a live action movie.  On Cartoon Network.

Immediately, I was concerned.

"Maybe they just like Batman," I said to myself.  "Surely this will never happen again."

But it did.  They showed more and more live action movies, with increasingly less connection to cartoon or comic roots.

And now, it has finally happened.  They are going to show "Dumb and Dumber".  I enjoy "Dumb and Dumber", I think it's a great brainless comedy.  But it has nothing whatsoever to do with cartoons.  It's not even really a kids' movie.  I can only imagine how they're going to edit it.

My mind conjures images of MTV.  Soon, Cartoon Network will do nothing but air shows documenting the lives of animators, or introducing cartoon fans to voice actors.  They'll put some people in a house and film it for no good reason, and everyone will love it.  Soon, they will open CN2 and stop airing cartoons on the initial channel altogether, except for the hour long show hosted by some jackass everyone hates which will showcase the same 30 second clips of the "most requested cartoons" day in and day out for months.

Soon, even CN2 will stop airing cartoons.  You'll have to turn to specially created SIRIUS stations which only play the audio of cartoons if you want any memento of what it used to be like, of the time when you could just turn to a specific channel and be exposed to any of several different and varied animated shows, nearly 24 hours a day.

For the love of God, somebody stop them before it's too late!

There already is a CN2.. "Boomerang" where they exiled all the classic toons that started them out in the first place.

 I'm not happy they're showing live action, either, but I suppose it's better than showing the same 5 cartoons they haven't had new episodes for in the last 2 years.  Maybe.

I consider that the VH-1 equivalent.

Who cares?  If I walked in to your house and found you laying about watching cartoons, I'd turn your tv off and make you go outside and play, anyway.  Lazy good for nothing brat.   :roll:

There was only about 2 or 3 decent hours of cartoons on CN every day anyhow. They have to fill the other 22 hours with SOMETHING. Might as well be Dumb & Dumber.

God, I'm glad it's not just me that thinks this. If you're over 20, caring about the Cartoon Network's lineup should be the least of your concerns in my book.

In other words, I don't really care.  I didn't know there was a law about what TV you're allowed to watch if you're over 20, though. Thanks for that nugget of info.  I happen to think that Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends is actually pretty clever, for a kids' show.

There's nothing worth while on CN until 11p. At least if you're over the age of 13. Ok, I do get a kick out of Ed, Edd, and Eddie and the Powerpuff Girls now and then, but not much else. I love that they've been showing Gigantor real early in the morning. And damn I wish I had Boomerang. Years ago, CN used to have a block called 'Boomeraction' in which they showed Space Ghost, The Herculoids, Johnny Quest, Thundercats, etc. Now that's good 'tooning.

I hadn't heard about Dumb and Dumber. But the movie title fits the level of the idea. Live-action on Cartoon Network is retarded, unless it fits the premise such as those old live-action Japanese TV shows where the men in bad rubber robot costumes fought other men in bad rubber monster costumes.

I think there's potential for CN to become the new MTV.

This is not meant as a knock at anyone who fits the above description, just at anyone who uses "what most women think", or for that matter "what most people think", as any sort of yardstick for anything.

I'm pretty confident with how far games have permeated our society now, people really don't hold the video game thing as a stigma anymore. It would be odder for me to ask the average guy if he played video games and have him say no at this point.

As far as the man-child thing I'm referring to the whole idea of the "grown-up boy" that seems to be prevalent in our society. Men that don't feel like men in their 20s or 30s, but rather like something of a limbo between adolescence and adulthood in their actions and emotions. Like there was a constant bleeding off of transitional behavior rather than a more complete severing. I'd say some connections to your childhood are good, and some things should have been left in the toybin for more adult pursuits. Which is which forms the real debate.

I think someone sold you a pig in a poke about maturation times and responsibility.  There are about a bazillion examples of 20-30 something adutl boys in history going back as far as there has been recorded history.  Pretty much any play by Shakespeare has a couple of these 'types' in it and though thats not factual history it IS pretty indicative of expected behavior(s) 400 years ago.

There are many different types of women in the world, go try to meet some and you will see this.

I have met girls who were waaay to geeky/nerdy for my tastes and many that do not understand and/or share my choices of entertainment (be it forums, gaming, miniatures, cartoons, having a pet spider, football, smoking, drinking heavily, poker, bad movies  or whatever).  But the vast majority of datable females I have met (read: girls who dont make me want to smash my face into a wall when they talk) are the type of person that doesn't give a fuck how another person chooses to spend their free time.  As long as your willing to find things that you both find interesting and spend time with her, it isn't a problem at all if she doesn't get and/or like some of your hobbies.

Would I refuse to date a girl who watches reality TV?  Of course not, I might poke a little fun, or roll my eyes when its on, the same way my ex you used to say things like "he's off playing dungeon's and dragons" to friends who came over even though she knew perfectly well what the actual name of whatever the game at that time was.

To re-rail. I do think Cartoon Network should be about cartoons and not live action. After all, that's like Comedy Central playing dramas, which I think they do occasionally under the guise of comedy, but that's not the section of the store where you'd find those videos.

I actually paused on that channel once because they announced Dexter's Laboratory was coming up next but it was something else.  If you are expecting Dexter's Laboratory, anything else is just disappointing.  I never looked back.

That explains last weekend's marathon of "Gigli".

I agree with that, too.  Comedy Central airs way too many shitty movies that not only aren't funny, they're not good.  A film like Hi-Fidelity is as serious as I want any movie on Comedy Central.

Life is too short to not enjoy yourself.  Being hung up on perceived societal regulations isn't something I do, for the most part.  I have decided that a man feels like I currently do, and oddly it's a lot like a big kid that finally understands all that responsibility junk his father was trying to drill into him... and I have control over the money.  This particular dedicated husband/father/desk jockey really laughs at some PowerPuff episodes because they are very smart and funny (the Yoko Ono episode, or Lucky Captain Rabbit King), and I don't feel the need to pull the drapes when I watch.  Ed, Edd and Eddy is also a great show; I enjoy the art as well as the stories.  Samurai Jack.  My wife likes Foster's and I think I do too, I just haven't seen much of it.  She also watches SpongeBob and Rocko on NickToons, and I catch Zim sometimes.  Good shows, don't let the fact that they are animated throw you off.  Some people can't get past facades (retread Wind Waker stuff) and that's just too bad for them, but whatever.  Do as you please.  I do.

I love cartoons.  Love em.  My kids love em too.  My wife hates em.  Hates em with a burning passion.  My kids and I make fun of my wife for it.  It is a fun game.  We own the TV on Saturday mornings!

When I look at my choices of TV anymore, I normally end up watching cartoons or VH1 I love the 80s or similar show, because I like to laugh at how I used to dress, buy things, eat, dance, etc.  I used to settle on Comedy Central, but (as said earlier) they are playing more and more movies that I wouldn't consider laugh riots.  When I turn to that channel, I want to instantly start seeing teh funny! (Stand up, SNL, MAD tv, Daily Show, etc.)

My wife gets back at me though.  She loves reality TV and that's about all she watches at night.  I absolutely hate reality TV.  It makes me physically ill.

I agree with the topic.  Keep the cartoons a comin.  Dumb and Dumber?  It gets played constantly on TNN.  I'd rather see them go out and find more talent like they did when they launched.  I'd also like to see more stuff that would bridge the totally stupid slapstick cartoons with more adult cartoons (not in the pervy sort of way.)  It seems like there is no in-between cartoons so I can see where people grow out of them during that gap.

I miss Teen Titans, that show was le brilliant.

Yep. Followed by Justice League. They'll be showing all the Justice League shows they did and then maybe (though no announcement has been made), they'll do movies. Teen Titans has already finished, but the movie is being aired later this year I think.

Damn it.  Those are two I really did enjoy (My oldest son too.)  Justice League was my favorite.  Teen Titans was the only cartoon I felt hit that middle spot between cartoons for children and cartoons for more mature audiences (again, not pron!) 

Argh.  They cancel those but will continue to run shows like the Ed's into the ground much like Ren and Stimpy.

Why'ed they do that?  Were they so popular that they felt they could make more money more efficiently by releasing movies?  Were they so unpopular that having 15-20 new episodes per year was losing money?  I don't get it.  This seems to happen to anything I find worth watching. (They yank around Batman every season too!  My son's favorite next to old Spiderman episodes.)

I'm not sure what the reasoning was. They appear to have other DC Comics based products in the wings.

Justice League was probably my favorite thing on Cartoon Network right now (I consider Adult Swim a separate thing... but it gives even the best of those shows a run for their money).

I was confused since I remember reading it on some site I can't remember that focuses heavily on comics and their TV/movie adapatations, and how CN was wishy washy on saying Teen Titans was flat out cancelled and how they still were "supporting" it.

Anyone else catch the "coming soon" bumper for Saved by the Bell on Adult Swim last night?  That was a joke, right? A tie-in to the use of Screech in the 2-Coreys part of Robot Chicken, right?  Please?  What the fuck?

Considering they said it was going to be on at midnight which would fuck with ATHF or Robot Chicken I assumed it was a joke.  I turned the TV off though just to be safe.

So the Saved By The Bell thing wasn't a joke.  They've been wasting airtime on it for the last few weeks.

When people say things like, "Man, Saved By The Bell was awesome!  That was real TV!" they're being stupid or ironic.  They don't actually want to watch that shit.  And, just in case there are any Adult Swim programmers here, I know you're eyeballing the next logical step- Charles In Charge.  Just know, if you do it, I will destroy you.

I recently got Adult Swim and CN On Demand. Great invention, that is.

Cartoon Network is committing suicide and I'm GLAD.  It's what they deserve for failing to excercise their rights to a third season of The Big O, and then foisting shit like Stroker & Hoop onto the world.  I hope they cancel Aqua Teen to run old episodes of Who's The Boss.

Sadly, many people hated Big O. Appaintly thoughtful, cutting-edge anime isn't what people want and endless re-runs of Family Guy is.  (I like it but enough is enough).

I think the problem for AS is they are stretched too thin. They have a finite amount of talent and they attempt to divide it between too many shows.

People like Family Guy because it IS funny. The last episode where Peter and Lois tried to reform the hippie duo they had back in the day was just brilliant. When Chris revealed what they really acted like on stage it was one of the finest moments in FG history and the lucidity from Chris was just awesome. Sure, some of the little nostalgic "remember the time" clips are funny, but the show itself is what makes it hilarious. What kills me are the folks who like Adult Swim and those cartoons (Harvey Birdman, Aqua Team, etc) and don't like Family Guy. They're practically the fucking same, but Adult Swim SAYS the jokes instead of animating them.

I just figured it out.  There's only one person on Earth that I've ever heard make the claim that Family Guy is never funny.

American Dad got a little bit funnier after the first few episodes.  It's not nearly as good as Family Guy, but it has its shining moments.  Patrick Stewart is one of them.  The Star Wars Kid was another.

Family Guy has some funny moments but it's a fluff show.

What made The Simpsons so great for the first 5 seasons or so was that it was hilarious and the characters and situations were vaguely real and believable. Homer about to cheat on his wife, Homer getting Marge a bowling ball for her birthday, etc. The situations were recognizable.

The Simspons now are just totally random and so is the Family Guy. They live and die based on individual gags because the characters themselves are just gag vehicles with no real personas. Episodes are just a series of random jokes.

The same thing happened with Seinfeld. It started as something quasi-realistic then they ran out of material and got into wacky shit like Kramer's blood being used as motor oil or something...

That kind of thing can work but it's just not as meaty overall.

And The Simpsons made some... well, I don't want to call them philosophical statements, because they're not, but it made STATEMENTS.

Family Guy doesn't.

It's certainly not the "omg funniest show evar" like a lot of people seem to think, but it is a good quality show with good quality gags that can get a laugh out of anyone with a soul.  At least it doesn't get all preachy and up its own ass with messages.

Family Guy is fucking hilarious. It tries way too hard and the "WOW, THIS IS JUST LIKE THE TIME I ___________" cutaway gags are really, really old at this point, but ADAM WEST dammit.

Adam has most of the best lines and bits in the series.

I agree Family Guy is basically a container for jokes, but they make me laugh.  I represent the target demographic.  I tune in for vomit jokes and James Woods pimping Videodrome and A-Team references and running gags and Street Fighter references, and it delivers.

The Simpsons is more like a container for funny quotes these days.  For me, the best Simpsons era was the Conan O'Brien run.  Hey, I just like that sort of thing.  I am not interested in seeing someone make a statement, I want jokes.
