Title: Installation Post by: Alkiera on January 27, 2006, 05:55:57 PM I don't remember seeing anyone else post anything... but has anyone else had problems with installing? Downloaded the installer, thinking I'll try out the trial, and it gets up to resSND.stuff and dies. Over and over. There's plenty of space on the disk. I've run it several times, it keeps dying on the same file. I'm re-downloading it now in case there was somehow an error, but it checks its own validity during startup, you'd think the installer would notice an error.
The installer is also SLOW. And doesn't skip the files that are already there. The only good thing I have to say about it, is that it's tiny, at only ~500MB. Still, I'd settle for a gig download if it made the install process suck less. EDIT: Apparently the download was just bad. Re-downloaded and it installed fine the first time. It's odd, I've almost never had a bad download lately. Now to find a trial key... Title: Re: Installation Post by: Merusk on January 27, 2006, 06:35:05 PM The Trial (http://www.eve-online.com/download/)
It's 14 days long, with only a few restrictions. (amount of ISK your wallet can hold, what skills you can train.) As for the install, I seem to recall I had a corrupted download on my first try back in June. Redownloading and trying again should work. Title: Re: Installation Post by: Moaner on January 27, 2006, 09:45:31 PM Downloaded the trial a few days ago and I'm think I'm hooked. I have never been so addicted to such a boring ass game...
I'll probably sub for at least a month and see what happens. All my real life friends play EQ, so it's hard to leave, but god damnit I'm sick of killing the same shit over and over again. I have never been so addicted to such a boring ass game... Ha. There definitely is some tedium involved, but I still think it is fascinating and a hell of a lot of fun. Title: Re: Installation Post by: Raging Turtle on January 28, 2006, 12:23:14 PM The fun factor ramps up quickly. Unless you're a miner :-)
Title: Re: Installation Post by: Strazos on January 28, 2006, 02:03:57 PM Well, at least the tedium in EVE can be somewhat bypassed; skill training continues while logged off, customizable autopilot.
That's all the boring tedium I have to put up with. I know nothing of mining. I got in and worked my way through the tutorial.
I have NO CLUE what I am doing. I picked a Caldori because I liked the way the dude looked, like a cross between a young Bruce Willis and Grand Moff Tarken with a dash of homocidal maniac thrown in for good measure. Skills?? I'm pretty much just randomly learning them at this point. I have no idea what any of them do and which ones are actually useful. So far it's pretty interesting, I guess I will have to wander around a bit and see if anything keeps my interest. It is a pretty game and I am suitably impressed at the size of the galaxy. Asgrimmur is the name of my toon if anyone wants to donate some funds to the war effort or at least send me an invite to the corp and some noob directions for things to do. Title: Re: Installation Post by: Reg on January 30, 2006, 05:39:50 AM Open your channels and mailing list window and join the F13 channel. There's almost always someone around there who can answer questions.
Title: Re: Installation Post by: Merusk on January 30, 2006, 08:54:20 AM Hm.. apologies that my link didn't work. I hit hit the 'try eve' tile from their front page and used that, figuring that it would, y'know, work.
Check out the 'useful skills' topic we've got going. It's a very good place to start. Title: Re: Installation Post by: Yegolev on January 30, 2006, 10:42:12 AM Mining can be boring, until some pirates show up. If, like me, you have nearly nonexistant combat skills, any red blip gets your attention quickly.
Title: Re: Installation Post by: Kail on February 22, 2006, 03:14:34 PM Sorry to necro this, but I didn't think it would be worth starting a new thread.
I'm hearing a lot of interesting stuff about this game, figured I'd give it a shot, and tried to sign up for the 14-day trial. Typed in my e-mail, it says it sent the trial code to me. I haven't recieved it yet (it's wednesday, I submitted requests sunday and monday, with different e-mail addresses, too). Anyone know if the trial is over or something? Am I supposed to create an account and THEN ask for the trial, or something? Any other obvious idiocy I'm committing? Did your spam filter(s) eat it? They also just did a major hardware migration and some of their backend stuff may have been affected as well. Title: Re: Installation Post by: Kashre on February 22, 2006, 03:39:33 PM afaik the trials are on-going, so that shouldnt be the problem.
my vote is for the spam filter. I have had problems with that before. Also, once you join if you're having trouble getting around, like they said there are always people inthe f-13 channe, and if you're still in your starter corp you can just ask questions in there. Odds are 1/2 of the people in there are experienced people playing on alts so they'll have the answers, and people are usually freindly. Title: Re: Installation Post by: Hoax on February 22, 2006, 03:47:20 PM Yeah the newbie corps are equal parts great asset for tips and completely retarded discussions of RL politics, religion and pop culture. Oh mix in the occasional US vrs UK thing and that wraps it up.
But yeah the f13 channel is a great place to ask damn near anything you need to know but aren't too embarrassed to ask. I don't think it's the spam filter; the only thing I've got filtering one of those addresses is a virus scan, and I checked my trash bins anyway and didn't see anything wierd (correction: I didn't see anything UNSUSUAL). I'd check their forums, but I believe you need an account to access them (and you need billing information to set up an account), and even if you don't, I've been having problems accessing their website for much of today. I'd go with the hardware migration problem, unless I'm the only one having trouble. Title: Re: Installation Post by: Trippy on February 22, 2006, 08:24:58 PM You can read the boards without an account and you aren't the only one with this problem:

Those pages seem to work fine, but I'm still having issues with www.eve-online.com for some reason. Oh well. Thanks!
Title: Re: Installation Post by: Yegolev on February 22, 2006, 09:20:39 PM Their web wasn't fantastic to start and it actually seems worse after the upgrade. I wasn't getting avatars, for example, and it might be something as silly as the web server not knowing Tranquility's new IP.

You only get avatars on the fourms if the person who posted has their profile set to "show avatars". Unless you're talking about something else... then ignore me :P Title: Re: Installation Post by: Yegolev on February 23, 2006, 07:53:45 AM You only get avatars on the fourms if the person who posted has their profile set to "show avatars". Title: Re: Installation Post by: Hoax on February 23, 2006, 09:04:29 AM The main site is screwy atm, its been down since last night more often then up. Not sure what's going on.
Title: Re: Installation Post by: TheWall on February 23, 2006, 04:15:09 PM I have been unable to get a key or find the downloadable application with the links posted. Any help?

I entered my email and such to get a key but it hasn't arrived in the last 24 hours. I eventually gave up on the trial and just bought the thing (though even their billing stuff wasn't working last night, astonishingly; I may have bought four copies, I'm not sure), but the client download from the site works fine for me. http://www.eve-online.com/download/ is the page to downloag the client; http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/EVE_3807.exe is the direct link to the file. I can mirror it if you're still having issues, but the site seems to work all right now. Title: Re: Installation Post by: TheWall on February 23, 2006, 09:33:41 PM Thanks a lot!
I'll be trying it very soon I hope. :-D Now I just need a trial key. Title: Re: Installation Post by: Viin on February 24, 2006, 08:12:31 AM I was able to get a key using the Buddy program, so if you want to PM me your email addy I can have it send you an invite with a key.
Title: Re: Installation Post by: TheWall on February 24, 2006, 08:43:24 AM Info sent. And thanks. I'm really looking forward to getting into the game.
Title: Re: Installation Post by: Yegolev on February 24, 2006, 09:19:24 AM Just buy it, you wil save yourself from a self-ass-kicking for putzing with the trial.
Title: Re: Installation Post by: Hoax on February 24, 2006, 09:21:12 AM You can upgrade a trial account to a full account, at least I'm damn near sure you can.
