Title: Great breakout clone - Jardinains
Post by: Mr_PeaCH on January 23, 2006, 12:16:11 PM
Yes, I actually still love some of those old-school arcade and pc games... being in my late 30s entitles me to that.  Anyone else out there hooked on Jardinains yet or just anyone else who loves a great breakout clone?

http://www.jardinains.com/

It can be downloaded any number of places as freeware and the main site offers to upgrade the freeware with additional levels for a small price; I'm just playing the free one right now.

If you're at all a fan of breakout games the one historically that really stands out for me at least is Arkanoid.  What I liked about Arkanoid were the variety of power-ups that would drop from the breaking bricks.  Jardinains has some nifty power-ups and also a great variety of levels which make better use of some than others.  Also some combinations of power-ups work better than others or work differently than you'd expect.

The signature feature of Jardinains is, well, the Jardinains; little garden gnomes who pop up from among the bricks to pelt you with their potted flowers and cacti.  Being hit by those doesn't outright kill you but need to be avoided because they stun you for a second or two during which may misplay the ball.  If your ball hits a gnome they tumble down and then you can bounce them repeatedly for bonus scoring until they explode and produce more power-ups.

Yes, the game is disgustingly cute with it's giggling gnomes but the actual game itself is very good and damned addicting.  Definately worth a look if you've got an old-school itch that could use scratching.
