Of course, I am very slightly less disgusted with Sony than I am Microsoft, so that's all good to me. Also, Pirates is indeed damn near art. I was amazed I ended up laughing as much as I did. As you know, better technology can't compete with the mindshare of the masses. PS3 seals the deal imo, but the 360 could've helped. I know I'm not happy with the thought of buying an add-on to watch DVDs, most likely I'll still be using my pc with an internal drive...if they make them because, you know, TEH PIARATES!!I'm reading a bio on Muddy Waters and they were talking about how during WW2 there was not only a shortage of shellac to make records, but a bill was passed to limit record production because it would negatively impact live performance profits. If it's that no one will be authorized to produce hardware that allows writing to a Blu-Ray Disc then some company will find an alternative method because the cash income potential for selling blu-ray writers would be enormous.
If it is an actual technology limitation issue then it might take a little longer, but probably not much for than 3-5 years. Title: Re: Folks, we have a winner! As long as the underlying hardware is not "secure" (from the copy protection maufacturers' perspective, not the user's) these things can always be cracked given enough time and effort. E.g. Microsoft's Windows Media 9 DRM format has been cracked by some enterprising hackers in Japan. Sony has shown that it is willing to go to great lengths to protect its content, however, so I would expect the Blu-Ray format to be an especially tough nut to crack (I'm expecting some of the encryption will be tied to the underlying drive hardware). |
