Title: Need to waste MORE time at work? Post by: WayAbvPar on May 20, 2004, 11:28:53 AM This (http://www.xeron.org/cosas/bowman/bowmanf.html) should keep you entertained between posting rants here. It is simplistic, but pretty damned fun. Much better than the whack the penguin game that was all the rage a few months back.

It's still fun. -- Alkiera Title: Need to waste MORE time at work? You had to edit it for each machine you ran it on, because the animation was based on an empty loop for timing, and powerful machines ran it way too fast...(and by powerful, I mean 66Mhz) -- Alkiera Title: Need to waste MORE time at work? First time I played Artillery was on the Apple ][es in my Elementary School's Science lab. Or maybe it was my Vic-20 or C-64, but I don't remember a particular artillery game for those platforms off the top of my head.
In my experience, the best implementations of artillery-like games was either Worms (preferably non-3D) or Scorched Earth. Though there have been 3D artillery games, 3D doesn't do well for the genre. Anywho, erm, good find WayAbvPar. Hurray for flash and people with too much time on their hands. Title: Need to waste MORE time at work? Post by: schild on May 24, 2004, 10:36:20 PM Mmmmmm, scorched Earth.
Title: Need to waste MORE time at work? Post by: Alluvian on May 25, 2004, 07:18:14 AM It always amazes me that no matter how many new artillery games come out, none of them have ever come anywhere NEAR the quality of scorched earth IMO. To me, gunbound SUCKS compared to it. Worms weapon selection sucks compared to it as well, but it had a lot of charm at least and I liked the mobility of the worms.
But scorched earth was the best. The REALLY big MIRVs and warp walls equalled love. Mmmmm death from above. Or alternately, we would sing "I'm on --- top of the world, looking --- down on creation with a bunch of baby rollers in my hand". And I liked all the different shields and earth moving/adding weapons. Title: Need to waste MORE time at work? Post by: schild on May 25, 2004, 07:31:00 AM As much as I hate to say it, Scorched Earth was streamlined in a way that only Blizzard can replicate. It's taken a number of years for games to be so straightforward since the original NES came out.
I mean look at the original Super Mario Bros. Then look at that bizarre super soaker Mario was wearing in his latest abortion. Sure, the game had it's moments - but that 'feeling' everyone got when they played the original is LONG GONE. Title: Need to waste MORE time at work? Post by: Alluvian on May 25, 2004, 07:36:47 AM You are thinking big dev houses though. Scorched Earth aint that kind of game. Lots of people in the small indie world can understand simple fun. Check out Pom-Pom games for two great examples. Space Tripper was brilliantly simple and fun. Mutant Storm brought back the old robotron fun for me with a decent dual analog setup.
Wonder what they are making next? Title: Need to waste MORE time at work? Post by: schild on May 25, 2004, 07:38:05 AM That's my point. It took a big dev house to achieve the streamlined nature of Scorched Earth.
The Mario reference was only to show how a game can go from streamlined into a complete mess. Title: Need to waste MORE time at work? Post by: geldonyetich on May 25, 2004, 11:05:44 AM You might not have liked Super Mario Sunshine, but I really can't argue with a sincere desire on behalf of a development house to develop new and interesting gameplay. "If it aient broke don't fix it" thinking tends to lead to clones, which we've more than our share of.
Back on the topic of artillery games, one I enjoyed was Moonbase Commander. There's a demo (http://compsimgames.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://www.avault.com/pcrl/demo%5Ftemp.asp%3Fgame=moonbasecmdr) out for it. It's an interesting twist where you're not just artillery firing projectiles but base modules. I suspect there's some killer tactics that are very hard to defend against, however. Title: Need to waste MORE time at work? Post by: schild on May 25, 2004, 11:10:50 AM I didn't say don't innovate. Jesus, people are reading into shit lately. I said it's a convoluted mess.
Games need to stop thinking that aiming with an analog stick is fun. It's fucking NOT. It's bad enough I have to aim my bow and arrow in Ninja Gaiden on XBox. If I had to aim the shruikens I do believe I would have killed someone by now. Title: Need to waste MORE time at work? Post by: Sky on May 25, 2004, 01:33:28 PM I can't agree enough with that sentiment about analog sticks for aiming. I was playing some desert combat something on my buddy's xbox, four of us in a squad, I'm the most experienced FPS player of the bunch (using mouse.keyb). I couldn't hit shit, and to make it worse, there was some kind of aim-correcting crap trying to 'help' me out...which meant my normal overcorrecting for the mushy analog stick feel turned into a total debacle. I left and went home to play Far Cry.

Title: Re: Need to waste MORE time at work? Post by: schild on October 15, 2005, 01:58:59 PM Hey Shockeye, I won. Guess where you have to go.
Oh, and that was the third try. First try was about 15, then 643 and then this score after a little math. First time I've done actual math outside of...ya know, counting change....since 10th grade.
