Title: Whirlyball!
Post by: Furiously on November 29, 2005, 09:13:55 AM
My buddy I play WOW with had his http://www.whirlyball.com/ league play last night. So I had started a new character a few nights before. (I had deleted my existing character and their non-reusing names thing annoyed me). So I played my jedi for a few hours, the new legacy quests are fun - and seem to give exp at a decent rate.

It should be Whirlyball.net (http://www.whirlyball.net/), not .com. That is the local business (and it is a lot of damned fun too!). We didn't end up playing last night, so he probably could have played WoW. I think he was still recovering from his weekend though...at least he was when I spoke to him

That is quite possibly one of the most insane things I've seen.  Not worse than that japanese thing with the men riding the log down a steep hill...  but pretty insane.  It's like... lacrosse for out-of-shape people.

That looks completely whack and I want to play badly! (The lacrosse in bumper cars, not the NGE)

It is a lot of fun. I did it a few years ago with my buddy's company (they needed an extra person to make it 10). I was HORRIBLE at it. A few years later I set up a game for my brother's bachelor party. Afterwards, the manager approached some of us to see if we would be interested in playing in a league. We put together a team, and have been playing ever since. We actually won the national title for the newbie level ('D') in 2004.

If there is a center in your area, it is well worth checking out. Great for office outings- lots of laughs, and pretty much anyone can play. It is actually much harder than it looks at first, but it is still a blast to play as a n00b.

Really?  'Cause to me, it looks nigh unto impossible.  8)

I'm sure it's something you can get better at with practice, history has shown that humans can get good at ANYTHING with practice...  But pick up 10 random folks off the street, put them in bumper cars, and pass out lacrosse equipment...  I'm sure watching is rather hilarious.  Someone needs to televise this.

I have been told that ESPN actually televised one of the matches in the late 80s or early 90s. Some of the folks who played in it still play at the Seattle center (which is the home to many or most of the world's best players fwiw).

League play is totally different from the basic office party game. There is actual teamwork and strategy involved, as well as a high degree of skill. Watching the n00bs play cracks me up- they bunch together like a couple of 1st grade soccer teams. But they are always having fun- they can't quit laughing and talking about it when they get off the court. I wish it was more visible- it has the potential to really be popular.

I can't believe you are starting this "whirlyball" nonsense again, WAP.  Sheesh... wasn't that back during WTO?  Listen to me... it's not a REAL sport.  It doesn't exist.  You made it up.  I don't care how many pictures you show me or how many leagues there are... no one in their right mind would name a real sport "whirlyball".

I don't believe in Hurling, either, except in the privacy of my own bathroom.  Or out the car door on the motorway.  Or in the bushes at a rock festival.

They do serve beer at the place and they do have a spectator area. So I think, that technically makes it a sport.

Beer is the sport, I think.  Or maybe it's a skill.  I forget.

They have a Whirlyball joint in Ann Arbor, also.  I played when I was with the now defunct online startup I was employed at at the time, and yep, it's a hell of a lot of fun.  Doesn't hurt that it's BYOB, to boot.
