Title: Texas Sues Sony BMG over Anti-Piracy Software
Post by: Nazrat on November 22, 2005, 05:06:52 AM
It turns out that the Texas AG (my boss) sued Sony BMG for the spywear software installed by their new CDs.

Saw that on kvue last night... pretty sweet. It's about time lawmakers started going after something worthwhile, instead of each other.

Wow, that Texas law is sweet! It adds some teeth into going after people who screw with other computers.

Piss off. We know it's an honest mistake, but it was a slightly amusing one.

I see your 7 in the morning and raise you a 3 year old with 2 ear infections. :-P

I am staying home with the rascal as I am a modern father.

Yes, in Texas, we don't tolerate no high falutin' spywear.

My daughter had ear infection after ear infection until we had tubes put in her ears. Now we just battle re-occuring strep infections...

Stop cleaning their ears with Q-Tips or whatever! Ear wax = protection!

This is also a problem with parents who are so scared of their little tyke getting sick that they religiously clean the house. Which causes the brat's immune system to take a nap, which again leads to asthma as soon as they step out into the real world which is full of viruses, bacteria, fungus, etc.

It is also about genetics. My oldest daughter has the same problems I did as a child. My youngest does not.

I had ear infections constantly (two or three a year) until I was about 14. I always assumed it was just a genetic pre-disposition. It certainly wasn't a case of my house being too clean :P It was probably made worse by my Mom's 2 pack a day habit, back in the days when parents didn't know enough not to breath smoke in thier kids faces.

I still occasionally have to take things like Nasonex to keep my sinuses clear and releive pressure on my ears.

Kids that eat stuff off the floor now and then almost never get sick. It's scientifically proven.

I had to rush my Mom to the hospital last week....She had been extremely nauseous and lost her equilibrium. It turned out that it had been vertigo brought by sinus troubles and an ear infection.

3 ear infections in one year = tubes in ears.

3 strep or throat infections in one year = T & A (Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy...or just tonsillectomy if adenoids aren't developed).

Kids that live with smokers, even smokers who smoke outside and not around the kids, will have more infections, especially U.R.I.'s (upper respiratory infections), ear infections, asthma, and bronchitis/pneumonia. The smoke and smoke particles stay on the clothing of the parents and carry into the kids, thus increasing the kids getting sick.

Oh boy...I sound like I'm at work :-P But I do have some tips on preventing ear infections and tips on helping kids get threw it. I love working with kids :-D

We love any opportunity to put the screw on anything New York. Now if Sony were an oil company Texas would require your kids to buy a case of protected discs every semester. ;)

My son had ear pain only after sucking down formula from a non-Doc Brown bottle. All of the others just didn't work too well. Of course genetics plays a part too, but I can't recommend those bottles enough.

There's that word again, 'heavy'. Why are things all so heavy in the future- is there some problem with the Earth's gravitational pull?

True. Sadly for me, the firstborn usually takes more after the father (my dad's an asshole - I blame him!).

Edit (addition): my parents each smoked two packs a day in our little apartment, but other than a really bad case of chicken pox at age 11, I never got sick. To this day, I've never had the flu. But I played outside in the mud and trees a lot when I was a kid and had a bad habit of putting stuff in my mouth. One time I choked on a jack (those little spiny metal things that kids play with) and once I choked on a dime. I choked on a Barbie shoe once, too, but I got it out of my throat before my mom found out. Kids with respiratory issues will often face more allergens indoors than out (except for pollen season), so parents of asthmatics are advised to keep their houses scrupulously clean.

To this day, I've never had the flu.

I can't, ever remember having the flu. I don't remember my mother or brothers ever having it, either. I had free flu shots available at work, for one job I had, and I didn't have one the first two years. Then some co-workers were going to get theirs and I tagged along. When I read the warnings, I actually considered not getting a shot! I had never had the flu, so a 1-in-a-million chance of a bad reaction seemed too high. I had one anyway and was ok.

Too bad I get the damn cold every year. Oh well, at least I don't have to worry about the much more deadly bird flu!

Rerail.

It turns out that part of the reason that the Texas AG is suing Sony is that some of my co-workers had installed Sony music CD's on their work computers with the resulting problems. Evidently, people are sensitive to federal tax info and state child support info being viewed on computers infected with spyware.

We just received 2 separate emails from Austin on the subject. They are pretty pissed in IT right now. :)

heh - first step, it is a fireable offense to use one's CD player in the company machine. ;)

Way back early in my career the CIO of my then employer required me to go around everyone's systems late at night and de-install any personal use software. Usually of course it was games. I'd deinstall it and call the person the next day to come by and pick up their data or at least the highscore files if I could extract it. I hated playing the hatchetman but everyone understood the situation and liked that I'd quietly take care of them.

I had the hugest collection of games back then.

TEXAS EXPANDS SPYWARE LAWSUIT AGAINST SONY (http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=15797666&BRD=1994&PAG=461&dept_id=339096&rfi=6)

It seems that an amended petition has been filed to include CD copy-protection technology known as MediaMax.

I hope Sony pays through the nose.
