DQ taught me poker and the joys of RPG's. Title: Re: 11/16/05 - Dragon Quest VIII Post by: voodoolily on November 17, 2005, 10:25:09 AM I watched Sauced play it for a bit last night, and it looks great (I'm a whore for cell shading). However, as I apologized to him this morning for passing out at 10:00pm, he admitted that turn-based rpgs aren't the best spectator sports. What I did see before I slipped into a coma looked great, though. A candy cat is the best goddamned enemy I've ever heard of.
Signe, sorry to hear about the diabetes. I was wondering why on earth anyone would be happy to hear about a sugar-free cheesecake recipe! Title: Re: 11/16/05 - Dragon Quest VIII Post by: Sauced on November 17, 2005, 10:36:17 AM Okay, sorry this thread got so retarded. Wait, no one here is retarded, are they? I feel like I'm walking on egg shells around here.
Earlier, I described the manual as charmingly old-school, and that can aptly describe the early part of the game, and I assume the rest of it as well. It's... *gasp*... hard, in the way that the console RPGs of old were hard - limited access to healing during combat, no resurrection type items (yet), and a lot of grinding. Someone dies? Take them to the church to get a res. Is it the guy with the Evac power who died? Enjoy the crawl back up the dungeon. Once you get out of the dungeon you can use an item to teleport back to any visited town, but you still get the run all the way back. Imagine if Wizardry 8 *forced* you to play in Iron mode. I played in that mode on purpose, so I have to admit, I love this style of play. I've already had to grind a little bit to make it through the first dungeon. This is assisted by the power that the second party member gets - the ability to start a fight anytime you want. Need some xp or a sword upgrade? Just have Yangus use his "Whistle" ability, and you'll never want to run around looking for random fights again as the joy of standing in one spot and doing it is a revelation! Truly, the genre has taken a giant leap forward with this new power. The score is stellar - there's a funky 50s thing going on, and the music really blends between exploration and combat modes. I say that now knowing full well that after hearing the combat theme for the 3000th time I'll be hoping the composer gets hit by a bus. The graphics are clean and simple, the Level 5 guys have their cell-shading style dialed in after Dark Cloud 2, and it really shows. The town design feels like they took a 2-D map out of DQIII and put a 3D spin on it - you got your armor store next to the weapon store, there's the inn, there's the guy that sells the Herb. Simple, nothing fancy. The character designs by the Dragonball Z guy are cute, and some of the monsters are genuinely chuckle-worthy, and of course, there are the hordes of Blue Slimes. The combat system does start out with the traditional "first person" look, as you survey up to 4 attackers. The camera does swing around a bit to show attacks and spell casting as appropriate, so it does keep it a little interesting. The story is vanilla - you are a former guard to a princess, who has been turned into a horse. The King has been turned into Yoda. You and your hired hand are going to find the wizard who did it, kick his ass, and get things turned back to normal. Or so it would seem after the first few hours of play. Haven't gotten to any of the mini games yet, but from the manual it looks like full-on casinos are in there somewhere. Apparently there is also some sort of "crafting", but I still need to find the "Alchemist Tub", where in I can apparently use this recipe for a "Thief Key" I found to make, uh, a Thief Key. I'm really enjoying it so far, but the FFXII demo was the best part for me so far. Holy shit. Title: Re: 11/16/05 - Dragon Quest VIII Post by: Yegolev on November 17, 2005, 10:59:15 AM I have never played one of the previous games, but my wife who has watched the commercial and here are her thoughts, paraphrased: "Man, that looks just like Dragonball."; "You're supposed to play a knight, not some crappy-looking gypsy."; "Why are there so may lewd attacks?"; "December 2006?!?!11" (after I told her the last release date I saw for FFXII).

Title: Re: 11/16/05 - Dragon Quest VIII Post by: Sauced on November 17, 2005, 11:28:10 AM When you level up, you get a couple of Skill Points. From the book, one of the characters has a special power of "Sex Appeal", so I can only imagine.

[edit] The game I am playing that my wife hates is currently Stubbs the Zombie. I might get DQVIII once I am done with Radiata and Baten Kaitos. And Shadow Hearts 1&2. And Twilight Princess. Title: Re: 11/16/05 - Dragon Quest VIII Post by: voodoolily on November 17, 2005, 01:11:06 PM I still haven't finished Baten Kaitos. Or Metroid PRime Echos, for that matter. God, I've got work to do. Stubbs the Zombie looks hell of fun.
Title: Re: 11/16/05 - Dragon Quest VIII Post by: Sauced on November 17, 2005, 01:13:55 PM Shadow Hearts 2 I'm sure she'll be thrilled when you tell her "I'll be done playing as soon as I find this last piece of gay porn." Title: Re: 11/16/05 - Dragon Quest VIII Post by: Yegolev on November 17, 2005, 01:16:57 PM Stubbs the Zombie looks hell of fun. Starts off funny and gets funnier. It is fun, too. Did I mention it is very funny? Moreso than Voodoo Vince, even. If you like zombies. Strange, after seven years of marriage (as of Oct 31) I only just found out that my wife totally hates zombies. Title: Re: 11/16/05 - Dragon Quest VIII Post by: Yegolev on November 17, 2005, 01:17:56 PM Shadow Hearts 2 I'm sure she'll be thrilled when you tell her "I'll be done playing as soon as I find this last piece of gay porn."You joke, but that might have her playing it. Title: Re: 11/16/05 - Dragon Quest VIII Post by: Lemming on November 17, 2005, 07:13:21 PM The story is vanilla... I've read fairy tales with more plot than any of the DWs I've ever played. I generally pick up DWs for the dungeons, mini games, and because I like the style of the series. Pretty much the same reasons I pick up the new Zelda every couple of years.Edit: Truthfully, the only thing I'm worried about is that this is the first DW title to come from Sqeenix. As long as there isn't mana being sucked from the world by some feminine villain, I think I'll be ok. Title: Re: 11/16/05 - Dragon Quest VIII Post by: Sauced on November 18, 2005, 10:02:29 AM Truthfully, the only thing I'm worried about is that this is the first DW title to come from Sqeenix. Title: Re: 11/16/05 - Dragon Quest VIII Post by: stray on November 21, 2005, 03:48:03 PM I haven't played a Japanese RPG in a while, so I was wondering....Would you guys recommend this over Makai Kingdom or Radiata Stories?
Title: Re: 11/16/05 - Dragon Quest VIII Post by: schild on November 21, 2005, 06:01:25 PM Makai Kingdom is le brilliant.
Title: Re: 11/16/05 - Dragon Quest VIII Post by: Yegolev on November 23, 2005, 09:14:34 AM Radiata Stories is great, but I can't compare it to the others you mentioned. Compared to the standard JPCRPG, it is really good. I admit that I am mostly impressed with the NPC implementation, and Tri-Ace is now off my shit-list. I'll have DQVIII on Dec 25.
Title: Re: 11/16/05 - Dragon Quest VIII Post by: schild on November 23, 2005, 10:41:20 AM TriAce was on your shitlist? But but but but they did Valkyrie Profile.
Title: Re: 11/16/05 - Dragon Quest VIII Post by: stray on November 24, 2005, 07:55:49 PM Well....I picked this up 2 days ago, but still haven't played. My PC has been grabbing my attention more than usual lately (Gaming-wise, I mean. It's apparant that I already find an ungodly satisfaction out of perusing message boards), and of course, today was Turkey day. I also have Resident Evil to finish.

Also, I've been playing DQ8. Awesome, but a noticible step up from the FF series which I have traditionally steamrolled over. You have to grind levels in this game to not get slaughtered in some areas, you can't buy stacks of "revive" items, and even regular enemies can wipe your party easy if they get lucky or you fuck up. I love it so far, but Yangus has such a strong cockney accent going I have no idea what the hell he's saying sometimes. You eventually end up in a place where other people have similar accents, and Yangus has conversations that sound like some sort of horrible alien tongue. "OY OY WHAT WE HAVE 'ERE WIT' THE ROGERIN THE OL' MEAT N' TWO VEG' RIGHT O'T 'ERE IN T' ALLEY ARE YOU PLUM KNOCKERED BECUZ I'LL BOX 'R EARS MATE!" Title: Re: 11/16/05 - Dragon Quest VIII Post by: Mazakiel on December 20, 2005, 07:30:43 AM I'm absolutely in love with this game.
I wasn't expecting to like it anywhere close to how much I do, after DQ 7. But I'm now facing having put...um...we'll leave it at alot of hours playing this game. It's a very fun, well polished game. Very fulfilling feeling to beat the game, and fighting Dhoulmagus was probably some of the most fun I've had in a battle in one of these in a good while. I haven't even touched the FFXII demo, and at this rate, won't any time soon. And whenever I decide to put this down, I've got the new Wild Arms remake plus a bunch of other games to start on. It's a good time for console RPGs, though I wish there were some PC RPGs to match at the moment. Either way, I haven't touched WoW in probably a week, which is quite an accomplishment for a game to achieve. Title: Re: 11/16/05 - Dragon Quest VIII Post by: Yegolev on December 27, 2005, 07:02:35 AM Just started DQVIII and it is awesome, as everyone says. This is the first Dragon Warrior/Quest I have played and I really like it. The combat is especially solid and rewarding without being needlessly complex. There is a grind but I find combat enjoyable and thus it does not bother me. I also really appreciate being able to control all of my party members directly. My wife, since she just watches me play, prefered the much lower combat demands of Radiata Stories since she tends to pass out before I get to the next bit of storyline. This game feels like what the Final Fantasy franchise might have been like in some alternate universe where they decided not to go the interactive-cutscene route. I can't find anything wrong with it so far.
I was really disappointed in the FFXII demo, mostly because the controls are total ass. I am reserving judgement on the other elements for now. Title: Re: 11/16/05 - Dragon Quest VIII Post by: Margalis on December 30, 2005, 03:48:47 PM Just started DQVIII and it is awesome, as everyone says. This is the first Dragon Warrior/Quest I have played and I really like it. Dude, where have you been the past 15 years or so? You never felt the joy of killing your first slime in Dragon Warrior 1? Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy were pretty similar games up to FF7. There were 3 FFs for the NES and 4 Dragon Warrior games. Dragon Warrior/Quest kept right on going, it's still the same game, the only major changes have been animation during combat really. FF started to veer off a bit starting with 6 but really taking hold with 7 and CD technology allowing for cutscenes. Title: Re: 11/16/05 - Dragon Quest VIII Post by: Fabricated on December 31, 2005, 03:39:19 PM Dragon Warrior has sold better overall than the Final Fantasy series in Japan too I think.
To be honest I was never really a fan of the series until this one, since the combat was almost TOO simplistic for my tastes. Title: Re: 11/16/05 - Dragon Quest VIII Post by: Yegolev on January 03, 2006, 01:07:26 PM Just started DQVIII and it is awesome, as everyone says.
