Title: Home brewing for Darwin. Post by: Shockeye on October 01, 2005, 01:06:30 PM Quote from: AP Contaminated Liquor Kills 14 In India (http://wcco.com/watercooler/watercooler_story_274141456.html) Oct 1, 2005 1:13 pm US/Central (AP) GAUHATI, India At least 14 people died after drinking illegal home-brewed liquor sold at unauthorized shops in India's remote northeast, police said Saturday. The death toll was likely to rise because 61 others were hospitalized after drinking the noxious brew Friday night in Tezpur, a town 110 miles north of Gauhati, the capital of Assam state, police officer L. Bora said by telephone. Many of those hospitalized were in critical condition, a doctor said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to reporters. The liquor deaths triggered violence, with angry residents attacking government offices and torching half a dozen motorbikes and some shops, Bora said. The residents also tried to burn down the state excise tax office, which regulates the liquor trade. Bora said samples of the home-brew liquor have been sent to a lab for tests. Such incidents are common in rural India, where cheap, homemade brew is sometimes mixed with methyl alcohol, which can cause blindness or death. The victims usually are poor people who cannot afford more expensive alcohol. Title: Re: Home brewing for Dawrin. Post by: Llava on October 01, 2005, 01:34:40 PM Man. Talk about desperate. I could go across the street and buy booze, I just don't think that alcohol is really that important of a facet of life.
(btw, typo in your title) Title: Re: Home brewing for Darwin. Post by: Pococurante on October 01, 2005, 06:13:51 PM Welcome to your grandmother's tea party.. ;)

Title: Re: Home brewing for Darwin. Post by: HaemishM on October 03, 2005, 10:09:24 AM Why would the citizens burn down the state excise office? The liquor was sold in UNAUTHORIZED shops. You'd think they might burn down the places that actually, you know, sold the liquor.

Ahh, what a difference a single carbon atom makes. Ethyl alcohol (ethanol) is what gets you drunk. But you can't just drink it out of the fucking chem labs, shit-fer-brains!
