Title: Trial account
Post by: Cheddar on September 29, 2005, 02:07:49 PM
Does WoW have a trial account option like other MMORPGs do (IE DL and try for a week)?

They used to, but I'm not sure if it's still available or not. It was severly limited, but let me poke around and see.

You sir, are a scholar and a gentleman.  I am dying for a game; I have taken a break from online play pretty much since EQ2 patched in assraping.  I might as well see what the fuss is all about in WoW.

Sorry Schild

They were running some trial accounts a few months back in PC Gamer and Computer Gaming World, but you had to get the physical magazine with the CD. It had a bunch of restrictions. I'm not sure if this is still available or not. The magazines may only be 1 or 2 months old. There were also 10-day guest passes in the Collector's Edition boxes that some of the folks here may never have used, but I don't know if an unused one would still be acceptable.

They don't need a trial account thing (at least the typical kind) because they know now that they can lure plenty of customers in by hype alone. Desperate they are not.

That is what I figured.  I just do not want to blow another 30+ dollars on a game that I do not play more than a couple weeks.  Eh, Ill probably break down and buy it anyhow.  Takes me awhile to do anything though.  Also Civ 4 is coming out soon, and I love that series.

I have one of the ten day keys and I don't think I ever gave it out.  You can have it but you would still need the game itself, I don't know if you can download the whole game from blizzard.

Thank you for the offer but I am heading out to buy a copy now.  My IRL friend and I have decided to succumb to the dark side.  Any tips for us? (we are both veterans of the type).  What server are you kids on, and what side???

We're on Emerald Dream/Horde. It's an rppvp server, but I can't really recommend a pvp server for a first experience. You'll get a chance to enjoy the content more (and make more gold) if you were on PvE.

Don't listen to him, nothing is more retarded than not being able to attack the paladin that is spamming /spit on you.

I actually prefer a more rough server.  Darktide on AC was amazing.  I am installing now; I will have 1 guest account in case anyone needs one.

I don't know. Taurens are the goodiest of the goodie if you ask me.

Little kids love to play them. So there.

And just listen to their /laugh. That's a "good" laugh, I say.

I remember being in a group of undead in front some instance in Ashenvale, there were elves everywhere, being horde I had never seen so many people in one spot.  It was shortly after release so not many night elves had seen undead yet and they were in a tight circle around us gawking (non PvP server).  The warlock begins porting in the last member of our party and we all join in, a few moments later this huge menacing Tauren flickers into existence.  All the night elves backed the fuck up, it was fantastic.

I personally don't understand how the "preserve nature" muscular hippie cows can work together with the clear-cutting-Ashenvale greenskins. But games have been no sources of brilliant logic.

I am definitely going to be undead.  I have wanted to be a zombie since childhood; its like a dream come true!  Not sure what class yet.  I really had fun with my scout in EQ2 and may try out the equivelant here.

I think Undead Rogues rock.  Since rogues fight in close combat - the will of the foresaken is extra handy in keeping close to your opponent if they try to fear you in pvp.

Dwarven rogues have possibilities too.  Couple a dwarven rogue with their racial treasure finding ability...

On Tauren... the art behind Thunderbluff is truely fantastic.  It is the most impressive, creative and unique city setting I have ever seen in a game.  For me the whole theme behind Taurens is brilliant.

Rogue Undead if you want to get the jump on people and make them hurt, Priest Undead if you want to melt faces and heal sometimes when you're bored of melting faces, Mage Undead if you want to freeze people like popsicles or fry them like chicken, or Warrior Undead because you like to hit things and make scary faces. I guess you could be Warlock Undead as well, but I don't know much about what Warlock do except argue with their minions.

I have a low level Undead Priest in the guild if you need someone to run around with Cheddar. I'm only on sporadically, but if you see Calistrae online and you need a healer let me know.

I just started an Undead Warlock for the hell of it. Also the ganking in STV is getting irritating since I cannot complete any quests.

Another character. Yahooey. I'd put a link to a hardgay (japanese comedian) video in here, but you don't like fun.

I wouldn't mind the fights in STV so much if I didn't have to get something like 40 Trolls Tusks at the same time . Really now. That's just a pain in the ass PvE wise. Now I gotta deal with retarded dwarves 10 lvls above me too? Fun.

I almost made a Warlock when the server came out, but realized it depended on the two elements I could never find much "fun" with in mmo combat: DoT's and Pets.

Well just got done with a 3 hour initiation to things.  Interesting.  I am enjoying my level 6 undead rogue; backstab is fun fun.  My friend went with a warrior, and he got all spaztastic after finding a bastard sword.  Thus far I have not been anally violated per Schilds chilling predictions.

And whats with the RPPVP server?  Is that not an oxymoron?

"Thou hast been owned."

Title: Re: Trial account
Post by: stray on September 30, 2005, 09:18:09 PM
Hmm...Not really an oxymoron. People are just "playing" assholes this time around, instead of "being" assholes  :-D.

Anyways, of course you're not going to see PvP now. You're lvl 6 and still in a Horde zone. You still have about 15 or 20 lvls before you see anything (and no, it's NOT AC Darktide, don't tell yourself that. You'd be lucky if it was).

Starting as Undead you'll have a much better initial experience than those that started as Orc or Troll as their first character. Tauren isn't too bad except you're routed to the same areas as Orc and Troll after awhile. Undead is much more contained in their own area.

Btw Cheddar, what made you quit Eve? The PvP is much more thought out there (notice the lack of "imho"  :-)).

I may resub myself. Call me Jett Rink!

You mean besides the set a path and come back 4 hours later mentality?  I got pissed off after my mining ship I had invested counted hours into aquiring was blown up mysteriously, and when I asked a question in chat I was mocked and derided.  The mocking and derision I can take; the 3-4 days of mining with a noob ship to be back at square one I could not.  Perhaps Eve will have a future with me one day; for now I will accept a subpar game that at least I can play IRL friends with and you fuckers.

Note: WoW has not been subpar yet in the least.  I may even be getting an account for my oldest.  It is intuitive enough for noobs and in my older years (I am far from old) I am finding the grind is less of interest and playing with friends is.

I've had a great time with WoW. Group pvp with old friends and a nice mixture of classes makes for great strategizin and general fun. Sometimes we whip out our rogues, (Almost everyone has one) and go on stealth pvp runs. We have a great mixture of stun lock and dagger rogues so that damn near nothing survives.

My only real lamentation about the game so far, is of course the players. There's enough crying about how this class can't pwn level 85 elites 5 at a time, that they're buffing up classes that were fine before, and leaving behind others that now are further behind on the power curve.  The My Guy Must Be Uber mentality sucks.

Well I will say this for WoW; they did it.  They managed to find the formula for the masses.  The problem is that the masses are idiots.  Of course now I am being elitist... but I do not like people.  At all.

Edit. Is there a type of mentoring system ala City of Heros?

Nope. And once you get outside of the optimal level spread (something like 4 levels), the lower people in your party take a hefy hit to xp gains.

It's not quite as horrible as it sounds. On my first character we had a L50 mage join us on a trip to gnomergan, a high 20's instance while the rest of the party was 28-32 ish and we still got ok experience for the trip. It's bad if you duo someone way too high and someone low but as you go higher that level spread increases quite a bit.

Well I think I am going to utilize the game mechanics to stay near my friends level.  Ill just avoid the inn, that way he has the double thingamajiggy stuff going on and I have normal.

Debuffs.  They rock.

Another reason to avoid rest is if you're prioritizing faction.  I typically do not take quests that don't have faction and go to all kinds of extremes to not kill anything outside my quest log.  It's an immoral imperative that my Orc Warlock have an Undead mount.

You can also just play another character when your friend isnt around. That's what I do. I have  a rl friend with way too time consuming a job to keep up to me so my warrior only plays when he's on. The rest of the time I play other characters.

Yeah thats what I am doing... got me a shiny new warlock guy up to level 11 or 12.  On the bright side of things my gaming time is going to go into sharp decline soon, though I am sure I will still find time to catass.  Funny how that works.
