Title: Silent Hill movie possibly won't suck. Post by: Fabricated on September 28, 2005, 07:07:46 PM http://www.edge-online.co.uk/archives/2005/09/roger_avary_tal.php
Interview with the man who wrote the screenplay for the Silent Hill movie. Considering he mentions how Uwe Boll has "done damage" to the image of game adaptations, I'm liking him a lot already. Title: Re: Silent Hill movie possibly won't suck. Post by: Llava on September 28, 2005, 09:17:19 PM Holy crap, someone with his head on straight.
Title: Re: Silent Hill movie possibly won't suck. Post by: schild on September 28, 2005, 11:47:31 PM I'm so so so so glad Boll isn't anywhere near this series.
Title: Re: Silent Hill movie possibly won't suck. Post by: Llava on September 28, 2005, 11:55:56 PM Wow, I thought you were going to rip on this guy's association with Tarantino.
Title: Re: Silent Hill movie possibly won't suck. Post by: schild on September 29, 2005, 12:09:34 AM No, I'm saving up all my Tarantino Hate for the inevitable release of his new hackjob.
Title: Re: Silent Hill movie possibly won't suck. Post by: Llava on September 29, 2005, 12:17:30 AM Really? Not even the bit about sticking his dick in a Nintendo harddrive?
Title: Re: Silent Hill movie possibly won't suck. Post by: HaemishM on September 29, 2005, 08:32:34 AM Wow, I thought you were going to rip on this guy's association with Tarantino. Avary was by some accounts the good side of the Tarantino movies. Without Avary? Kill Bill. Title: Re: Silent Hill movie possibly won't suck. Post by: stray on September 29, 2005, 01:55:36 PM Avary is the shit. Yes, it'll probably be good.
Title: Re: Silent Hill movie possibly won't suck. Post by: Jain Zar on September 29, 2005, 03:43:33 PM Kill Bill was Tarantino's love letter to Asian gangster movies and Uma Thurman. It just happened to make him some money in the process is all.
Title: Re: Silent Hill movie possibly won't suck. Post by: schild on September 29, 2005, 03:46:20 PM Kill Bill was Tarantino's love letter to Asian gangster movies and Uma Thurman. It just happened to make him some money in the process is all. Resevoir Dogs was a better love letter if you want to call anything by that weasel by such a term. Title: Re: Silent Hill movie possibly won't suck. Post by: Jain Zar on September 29, 2005, 03:48:31 PM But Res Dogs was also a kickass movie, so it doesn't count. Sorta.
Title: Re: Silent Hill movie possibly won't suck. Post by: stray on September 30, 2005, 03:16:31 AM No, it doesn't count. Reservoir Dogs is awesome (and Schild knows it...).
Then again, the best of RD can be attributed to Avary as well. Title: Re: Silent Hill movie possibly won't suck. Post by: Ironwood on September 30, 2005, 03:26:51 AM Kill Bill was Tarantino's love letter to Asian gangster movies and Uma Thurman. It just happened to make him some money in the process is all. And it was awful. This is why I don't read other people's love letters. Title: Re: Silent Hill movie possibly won't suck. Post by: UnSub on September 30, 2005, 06:48:41 AM Just because the screenwriter says something, doesn't make it true. After all, it's really the director's show. "Crying Freeman" doesn't rate too well as a film, so using it as an example of a previous work shouldn't really raise any hopes; "Brotherhood of the Wolf" wasn't too bad, on the other hand. Neither seem like a good fit someone to go on and direct "Silent Hill".
There, I'm done - please return to your Tarantino discussion. Title: Re: Silent Hill movie possibly won't suck. Post by: HaemishM on September 30, 2005, 07:59:11 AM Kill Bill was Tarantino's love letter to Asian gangster movies and Uma Thurman. It just happened to make him some money in the process is all. I thought Kill Bill was a love letter to Uma Thurman's nasty, crust-infested feet, with some really bad Asian chopsocky and a pretense of a storyline thrown in to justify making 2 shitty movies out of 1/2 of a shitty movie. Title: Re: Silent Hill movie possibly won't suck. Post by: tazelbain on September 30, 2005, 10:13:51 AM Can't believe you guys are crying over Kill Bill. The previews told you it a cheesy martial arts movie, if you don't like cheesy martial arts movies, its your fault for watching anyway. I like do; I like Kill Bill.
Title: Re: Silent Hill movie possibly won't suck. Post by: HaemishM on September 30, 2005, 10:16:59 AM Oh, I like cheesy martial arts movies. Just not that one. It displayed no talent other than the ability to blatantly rip off everything he's ever seen, no storytelling chops, and an insistence on dialogue that just didn't fit the scenes. It felt forced and crappy and crappity crap crap.
Title: Re: Silent Hill movie possibly won't suck. Post by: Pococurante on September 30, 2005, 10:46:05 AM Isn't "homage" just a nice way of saying "the ability to blatantly rip off everything he's ever seen"? ;)
Title: Re: Silent Hill movie possibly won't suck. Post by: Evil Elvis on September 30, 2005, 11:10:09 AM ... and a pretense of a storyline thrown in to justify making 2 shitty movies out of 1/2 of a shitty movie. Even that was taken from Lady Snowblood. Title: Re: Silent Hill movie possibly won't suck. Post by: voodoolily on September 30, 2005, 02:16:43 PM Well I have nothing but respect for Tarantino's ability to revive the cold, dead careers of the likes of Pam Grier and John Travolta. Wait. Travolta, not so much. But hey, he brought Go Go to American audiences!
The first Tarantino flick I ever saw was Pulp Fiction. I was on three hits of acid. It touched me in my special place. And you gotta admit, the man has a knack for a soundtrack. He did the same thing to the blaxploitation genre that he did to chopsocky, but I don't see too many people getting their roos in a wad over that. Edit: Oh, and as long as the Silent HIll flick doesn't star the gorgeous but theatrically-challenged Milla Jovovich I'll buy. I think Topher Grace would make a good Henry though. Same voice and stuff. Edit again: except that they're not making SH4. Oh wells. Title: Re: Silent Hill movie possibly won't suck. Post by: Rhonstet on September 30, 2005, 03:17:13 PM While I am pleased that someone writing screenplays realized that Uwe Boll must be stopped, I'm more then a little skeptical that _anyone_ can handle a videogame movie.
Has anyone seen the previews for Doom? I mean, Doom is a gaming grandaddy, you'd figure it would get some of the best respect and attention available. But people were laughing at the first person scenes while watching the previews for Serenity. When people going to a Space Western written by the guy who did Buffy think your movie looks corny, you're in trouble. Title: Re: Silent Hill movie possibly won't suck. (Because she is at least amusing in commentary tracks.) Its Jessica Alba. Someone needs to keep her OUT of movies, or at least movies not shown on Cinemax after midnight. But people were laughing at the first person scenes while watching the previews for Serenity. Yes, and you are correct in that it looks like total monkey shit. Ape feces. I only feel sad that the Rock has to try to play this piece of Uwe Boll-esque crap straight. The 1st person scenes look more retarded than the video game scenes Boll inserted into the House of the Dead movie as transitions. Title: Re: Silent Hill movie possibly won't suck.
