Title: Taking the cat out of the ass. MMORPG rehab?
Post by: Fabricated on September 25, 2005, 08:13:47 PM
One of my friends plays WoW for 12 hour stretches on his days off. I'm getting annoyed with it despite the fact I have some nice new phat lewts due to him dragging me on instance runs.

I could go the simple route of telling him to "stop playing so fucking much", but if there's anything with more entertainment value that'll net a positive result I'm open.

He's not a catass in the true sense of the word since he does indeed go to his fulltime job and leaves the house off and on (usually to hang out at my place...and play WoW), but he's losing sleep. I figure it'll only get worse from there.

You could fix it by doing what I plan on doing to Shockeye.

Kill him.

Too much effort.

Not if he won't stop drinking once he starts.

Put strychnine in his guacamole.

And some big grains of salt in his margarita.

MMORPGs are dangerous stuff, I'm happy I got addicted a long time ago when it wasn't as refined as it is today. WoW got me addicted for a couple of weeks, but got down to reasonable levels pretty fast. If WoW would've been my first experience with the drug it would probably have fucked up my life. I hear a lot of stories of people who can't controll it, a good friends friends friend quit his day job as a doctor to play WoW, for example.

Anything at this stage you try to do will damage your friendship.  Respect your friend enough to give him the time to work it through - odds are good he's hiding from something IRL - eventually he'll have to face it and will learn some valuable lessons in the process.  You don't want to shortcircuit a life experience.  Just be there when it's time.

Negative life lessons are at least as valuable as positive ones.

Friends don't let friends play WoW.

Im constantly telling my clan mates they are completley wasting their life grinding the months away inside some stupid game, that they are are hopelessly addicted, are poopsock using catassses of the highest order and that the elven fags should discard their +5 cloaks of anti-socialism and wake up and smell the fucking coffee as soon as possible.

It hasnt worked :P

I read this thread and cancelled every MMO to which I was subbed.  Even my CoH account.

Seriously.

I hate guacamole.

If there is strychnine in it, I can understand why! But regular avocado-y garlic-y lemon-y tomato-y guacamole? How can you hate that? Especially living 100 miles from the Mexican border? That just ain't right.

There is something kinda 'eeeehhh' about a boy who don't like guacamole.

I'm still ok until sometime next month so I might play once in a while.  I'm in the CoV beta too, although I seem to have lost interest in it.

Or he'll get bored.  Is this his first MMO?  How long has he played?

Anyone have a link to the original catass article?  The phrase "Tyson's den of Cat Ass and Murdered Time" makes me laugh every single time I think about it.  I wonder where that guy is now...

EDIT: Found article.  New generation, enjoy! http://www.metroactive.com/papers/metro/06.01.00/cover/onlinegames1-0022.html

Corpnews had a post from a guy who got together for beers with guys in his area and acually met the catass.  I seems (if the post was on the up and up) that the original is now a reformed catass.

I suggest finding your friend a partner who will pin him to the bed and screw him into oblivion for at least an entire weekend.

One of the breakthrough points in getting out of my chemical dependancy was when my therapist pointed out to me that drugs first elevate your neurotransmitters and then depress them, resulting in the need to use drugs just to get your brain back to normal.  MMOs elevate neurotransmitters, but don't depress them, hence a new shiny should substitute nicely for the MMO.

And if you find your friend a partner, see if there is a sister for me.

Triplets please?

It's not like I have anything more entertaining to do on the weekend than research, anyway.

I don't know if glorified masturbation is going to do much. It would get him out of the house.

Anyway, this is his third or so MMORPG that he has actually played for any time. He played RO for a while, and then FF11, and now this. He seems way more into WoW than he did the previous two.

A sexual relationship with a living, breathing (uninflatable) partner is much more than glorified masturbation. For one thing, it's a lot harder to schedule your MMOG time around.

Heh.  To this day "Dready Lady Wifey" is shorthand in my circle of RL friends for a guy having to drop out of a group, "PK'd" IRL to pay her some quality time.

And yet, I can't pry my wife away from WoW with a crowbar.

"Just one more piece of the devout set".

Sigh.

Our guildies usually shout, "Wifed!" for those situations.

To first poster: The remedy could depend on the motivation.  Some MMO players only play a lot when they deem that there are still moderately attainable goals out there to reach.  If this fellow nears the pinnacle of achievement, his time may taper off until some new stuff gets added in.  It also could be worse- high-end instances have 4/5 day respawn timers!

And more expensive than the MMORPG.

Time is money. At the very least you get to buy yourself good food when you take a chick out. In an MMORPG the best you can do is /pizza /donate.

I went down that road during my EQ days. I basically quit cold turkey before things really got out of hand but I'm also the type that does a lot of self-analyzing so I knew the game was causing me problems. I can't really give you any specific suggestions but like most negative "addictions" he's going to have to admit to himself that he has a problem before his behavior is going to change so anything you can say or do that will help him recognize that he's playing too much is a step in the right direction.
