Title: Surf's Up Dude! Post by: SnotBag on September 23, 2005, 11:49:25 AM Surfer Arrested Off Shore Of Galveston As Rita Approaches
A surfer off the shore of Galveston, Texas, was arrested Friday for not adhering to evacuation orders and surfing the large waves created by an approaching Hurricane Rita, according to a Local 6 News report. The man, who was not identified, was taken into custody by police after coming out of the surf. Police said he was apparently not taking Rita serously, attempting to surf off the shore of Galveston. Mandatory evacuations have been in effect along the Texas and Louisiana coast. Friday, Rita remained a Category 4 storm, aiming its 135-mph winds at the Beaumont and Port Arthur area about 75 miles east of Houston. "We are thinking 3 or 4 a.m. tomorrow," Mowry said. "It may be a Category 5 in the next 12 to 24 hours and then weaken before it makes landfall." Rita is expected to bring a storm surge of 15 to 20 feet. Rita is the 17th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, making this the fourth-busiest season since record-keeping started in 1851. The record is 21 tropical storms in 1933. Six hurricanes have hit Florida in the last 13 months. The hurricane season started June 1 and ends Nov. 30. (http://images.ibsys.com/2005/0923/5011711_400X300.jpg) Title: Re: Surf's Up Dude! Title: Re: Surf's Up Dude! Post by: Mr_PeaCH on September 24, 2005, 02:35:41 PM As a surfer, the way the media always takes time out to showcase one or two of these dudes always cracks me up. In this case, the guy was surfing mere hours before landfall... yeah, the surf was big but so was all the wind; conditions were frankly horrible. One has to wonder how bad a typical day in Galveston is to want to get out in crap like that. Regardless, "hurricane surf" is often very, very good; but what the surfers really want is for the storm to be moving towards them but still be a long way off. To have the winds sort of focused on a path (or 'fetch') towards them for a few days but then have the storm veer off some other direction leaving the swells generated by the storm marching their merry way to the beach. This sort of thing happens several times a year typically along the east coast. It's a little more dodgy on the west coast (and the hurricanes never make it up to So Cal; water is too cold) but we'll monitor every little depression that spins off of Mexico in the hopes that they will clear the Baja penninsula, grow stronger while still in warm water and tack northward for a couple days. Then we all call in sick to work.

It's not just the water. There are crawlies on land that are just as nasty. While I find Australia extremely cool, it is just not fit for Human habitation. Title: Re: Surf's Up Dude!
