Title: So whats the price of gas in your area today?
Post by: SurfD on September 17, 2005, 09:24:03 AM
Came home from work, and the guy in the room next to me was watching this:

Got a good laugh out of it.

Right, then the gas price is roughly $6 here. As low as $3 was like a decade ago.

EDIT: typo

Still over $3/gallon around here, saw it down to 2.84 in Vermont.

I got it for $2.73 the other day. Someone mentioned they saw $2.56 somewhere, but after reading the stories of WHY that gas is so cheap from our board-local station owner I don't think I'll hunt that 'bargin' down.

We just dipped under $3.00 here in the East Valley for Unleaded as of 36 hours ago. Premium is still about $3.25. Fuckers.

Shell's got unleaded for 2.65$ here in texas.

It's sad that I think of that as being cheap.

$3.40ish north of New York. Highest I saw post-Katrina was $3.89. All prices for 89 octane since that's what I buy.

Getting down close to $2.50 for the cheap stuff here in Michigan.  I think even the premium shit is under $3 now.

After conversion to American equiv. - we are down to about $3.62 / gallon here.

I think we're around $2.49-$2.69 depending on where you buy. I get the 89 octane myself, it's around $2.54-$2.64.

Low grade here (Denver) is $2.89/gal, which is 87 Octane.

Premium grade is $3.09/gal, which is 91 or 92 Octane.

AvGas (100LL) is $4.19/gal, which is 100 Octane. Jet A (diesel) is $4.37.
Ouch.

Yeah there has been a lot of noise in our local papers that marinas are gouging, charging as much as two-three times the price of nearby gas stations.  Bothers me not.

If Rita hits hard here in Houston, gas will probably go up again due to damage at all the refineries here. Might want to fill up your tanks before this weekend.

Hm.. Rita's a big bitch, isn't she? Rita also sounds like a storm that's going to kick you in the sack and make your wife her bitch.

I notice tropical storm S_ forming off to the right there as well.  What a great season it's been, we're about to lap the alphabet.

So far three of my friends are moving their households up here to Dallas for a nice weekend visit.

We're all extremely concerned.  Houston is not a soup bowl like N.O. but they had people drowning in elevators just a few years during a tropical storm.  Most of Houston is just a few feet above sea level and drainage is notoriously bad/non-existent.

Here's a little news article from February of this year just so no one's favorite political party tries to claim tragedy was unforeseeable... (http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/metropolitan/3046592)

I remember what Alicia did in 1983 and it was just a warm friendly puppy of a hurricane...

And just to get your fill of retarded human behaviour for the day, the gas panic has begun in my town already. Yes, I had to go out at lunch to fill up my gas tank (it was on 1/4 full) because someone started the rumor that FEMA was going to confiscate or otherwise suck up all the gas in my area in preparation for Rita relief. So what does everyone in the town do? Panic like headless chickens and run to the pumps. Hours later, my office hears about it and my boss (who I am carpooling with) tells me to go fill up just to be safe. So thanks to other panicing sumbitches, I have to run about and fill up. The place I went to had about a 20-minute wait, and was selling premium only (I assume having sold out of all the regular and mid-grade beforehand). THANKS, JACKTARDS!

Sounds more like you kowtowing to your boss... :P  I topped off my turbo diesel as soon as I heard Rita hit Cat2.  Sure enough this morning diesel was up another quarter.

In Illinois the price for 87 octane was 2.59-2.69 in the hinterlands, and 2.80-2.89 in Chicago.  I'm sure Rita will drive it up, but price hasn't been bouncing too much, since the gov and attorney general are looking to score points with voters by crucifying people for gouging.  Hooray for cynical pandering.

Ok, so if a US gallon equals 3,78 litres then premium (called super in germany, 98 octane) around here costs around 5.29 Euro or $6.42 per gallon, normal is at 4.99 Euro or $6.05 per gallon, 100 octane fuel (called super plus) is at 5.60 Euro or $6.80 per gallon and diesel is at 4.28 Euro or $5.20 per gallon. Please take note that diesel fuel has lower taxes attached to it than normal or premium fuel.

Within a 4 square mile area around my house in Chicago, regular gas ranges from $2.74 to $3.01.  There were multiple customers at all of those stations when I saw those prices.

I was out in the 'burbs last week (Naperville-Wheaton-Downer's Grove) and saw gas just over 3 bucks.  Came back to the city, and the two stations right by my freeway exit were at $3.25 for regular.  Granted, these were the ones RIGHT THERE at the expressway, which always run a bit high, but the cheapest I saw it was at $2.99.  Which was actually cheaper than out in the 'burbs.  It's almost always the burbs that have the cheaper gas.  Maybe I can hope that this means the universe is punishing SUV owners.

SUV and truck owners....I am laughing at how much filling their tanks must be costing.

Though hybrid people are laughing at everyone else.

And those people who run on vegetable oil conversion kit diesel cars? They probably hardly noticed.

89 pence per litre.

We don't do gallons over here anymore, as the numbers won't all fit on the price boards. Hurrumpf.

Anyway, turns out that is the equivalent of $5.93 for each of your crazy american gallons.

Biodiesel in bulk costs ~$3 per gallon to produce; it's only in the last few weeks that it's actually become cheaper than regular diesel.

It's easy and relatively cheap (20-50 cents per gallon) to produce from vegetable oil or animal fat, but obtaining feedstock is the spendy part.  For small quantities the cheapest source is probably something like used fryer oil from a fast food place like McDonalds, who'd be happy to have you take it off their hands, but you'll need to filter it real good.

A guy I work with makes his own bio-diesel from fast food grease, he says it costs him about 75-80 cents a gallon overall to make the bio-diesel.

Edit:  Also costs him a good chunk of a weekend every month or two, so factor that in too.

Yeah, disposing of that kind of stuff is a minor hassle for fast food restaurants anyway, so if you can get hold of it it's gonna be dirt cheap (assuming they charge you at all for it), but you likely won't get enough for more than personal use.

Should factor in the highway tax on that fuel as well; I don't know about your state but here in Idaho it's somewhere around 25 cents per gallon--you're required to report how many gallons you use driving on public roads and pay the tax on it (off-road use requires no payment).  Ordinarily it's included in the cost of fuel you buy at the pump.

*edit - what's up with the wierd text butchering happening on the boards??

Sometimes, particularly in Firefox, you'll get 2 posts  that run into each other.  Biggest symptom is an avatar over the avatar spot directly below it.  If I see it again I'll get a SS.  I figured it's just a random glitch, refreshing corrects the thread about half of the time.

Also witnessed, though refreshing has always fixed it for me.

I just attributed it to Firefox's typical wonkiness.  There's a reason lots of web designers hate it.

Well I'd attribute it fully to Firefox if I didn't get it at work sometimes as well.  Can't install alternative browsers there because so many of the internal programs are web-based, so I'm forced to use IE.

Well, I use Internut Exploder, not Firefox, but I kept getting a lot of posts with extra (or missing) words last time I logged in. For instance, on that last post I made, it showed as missing about half a sentence until I made the edit.

I looked at some of the threads that were funky for me yesterday, but they look normal today.  Go figure.

Don't run your tank near empty - over time it will build up permanent moisture in the tank and it puts serious stress on your fuel pump.  I make a point of never dropping below a quarter for these reasons but also diesel is not all that common in the local suburbia.

Thank these guys.  Anything I know about cars comes from their show.

One of the high points in my life was being trapped by a city-closing blizzard in old Boston with the lady who is now my wife - we had the whole town to ourselves pretty much and walked everywhere including a fun snowball fight in the Commons.  While walking across the Harvard Square we looked up to see that window looking much like the picture.  Well without the whacky ex-hippy mechanics from MIT.

There was a time when if you bought a flatbed scanner you weould get a 'free copy' of Photoshop. I remember when dealers started selling Photoshop with the bonus of a 'free scanner'. I think cars and tanks of gas are headed for that sort of promotional switcheroo.

Yet another reason, heat. Heat is the enemy of anything electrical or mechanical as we all know. Gas cools the pump, and if you continually run your car low on fuel, you significantly shorten the life of the pump.
