Title: Old Magazines. Post by: Strazos on September 11, 2005, 01:40:26 PM What do you all do with them?
I'm actually attempting to clean my room now, and one of the biggest problems I am having is all the magazines I have in piles around here; FHM, maxim, GamePro, and a bunch of other gaming mags. I really don't know what to do with them - There has to be a better solution than just throwing them in the trash. Title: Re: Old Magazines. Post by: stray on September 11, 2005, 01:48:28 PM I live near an elementary school with a dumpster-sized recycling bin used for paper and such. I put all my paper trash there (when I have a lot of it, that is).
Title: Re: Old Magazines. Post by: Strazos on September 11, 2005, 01:53:42 PM I thought glossy print was a no-no for recycling?
Or maybe that's just a no-no for using in a fire. Title: Re: Old Magazines. Post by: stray on September 11, 2005, 01:55:30 PM I thought glossy print was a no-no for recycling? Or maybe that's just a no-no for using in a fire. Hmm...Didn't know that. Well, I've got good intentions at least. I don't read a lot of magazines anyways. Most of it is newspapers or just....Paper. Title: Re: Old Magazines. Post by: Strazos on September 11, 2005, 02:44:55 PM Just found a (beat-up and dusty) FF3 box with the manual.
As I specifically remember despising the game after I beat it, to the trash it goes. (Seriously, WTF would I do with a beat-up box and manual anyway?) EDIT: Also, Xenogears, which I now have no use for. Though it's not actually going into the trash. Title: Re: Old Magazines. Post by: Signe on September 11, 2005, 07:12:51 PM This thread is not pointy at all.
Title: Re: Old Magazines. Post by: Margalis on September 11, 2005, 10:20:34 PM Subscribing to FHM and Maxim were your first mistakes.
Title: Re: Old Magazines. Post by: Fabricated on September 11, 2005, 11:06:41 PM I just moved about a week or so ago, and I basically threw out all of my old game magazines except for my Nintendo Powers (which I guess are collectable) and game guides. I kept all of my MAD magazines since well, those definitely ARE collectable.
I reduced a half closet full of magazines to two boxes. Title: Re: Old Magazines. Unless you have ones from [long] before you were born, your MAD magazines aren't and won't be worth shit. Title: Re: Old Magazines. Post by: stray on September 12, 2005, 08:56:18 AM I have several issues from 85-88, but they're in shitty condition.
Title: Re: Old Magazines. Post by: Toast on September 12, 2005, 11:07:32 AM Don't be a stereotypical pack rat gamer.
Throw that crap away and don't live in squalor. Title: Re: Old Magazines. Post by: Llava on September 12, 2005, 12:01:33 PM My Dad offered me his collection of Playboy, which is quite extensive. Despite that, I turned him down. I really don't want to accept porn from my Dad.

I really don't want to accept porn from my Dad. Despite teh boobies, I can hardly call Playboy pr0n anymore. It's mainstream enough. Also, Playboy back issues are pretty good sellers. Title: Re: Old Magazines. Post by: Hanzii on September 12, 2005, 01:04:59 PM I picked one of the Playboys where one of Stephen Kings earlier short stories appear. If the condition was better, it would be worth a bundle.

If the condition was better, it would be worth a bundle. (even more than my limited edition Sandman #50 with a handdrawn Sandman signed and drawn by neil Gaiman on front and Dave McKeans signature on the back...) Title: Re: Old Magazines. Post by: Evangolis on September 12, 2005, 01:29:08 PM Worked a paper recycling place in my youth, naturally the break room was full of porn, including a Playboy with a great article that was a stream-of-conciousness review from backstage at a Grateful Dead show. Stunning writing. Bizarre images.
And there was my fellow grad student Steve. After he came back from doing field work in the desert over the summer, I helped him clean out his truck. Nothing surprising to me about all the Playboy's jammed under his seat; a man alone in the desert for three months, after all. But I was surprised when he came out to all of us a few months later, and I had to ask him, why a gay man would have all those Playboys. He pointed out that he had a liberal political bent, much like the editorial policy of Playboy, and I nearly doubled over with laughter when I realized that, as the punchline of the old joke went, Steve indeed did read Playboy for the articles. And old magazines mostly need to be recycled. Some places take slick paper, but any hardcovers have to be removed or they will foul the shredder blades. We taken out a couple of pickup loads in the course of clearing out mom's house. You can do a search for collectibles on the Internet, but most stuff is of little value. Title: Re: Old Magazines. Post by: Strazos on September 12, 2005, 02:26:22 PM Subscribing to FHM and Maxim were your first mistakes. At least they were free subs. Apparently, I get Blender also. That's a waste of paper. But I consider the nekkid wimmens to be a pleasant and very welcome bonus.
Value Add and all that. Come for the articles stay for the boobies. Title: Re: Old Magazines. Post by: Yegolev on September 13, 2005, 07:43:39 AM Just found a (beat-up and dusty) FF3 box with the manual. As I specifically remember despising the game after I beat it, to the trash it goes. (Seriously, WTF would I do with a beat-up box and manual anyway?) You, sir, are a dumb fucking no-game-history-knowing book-burning neanderthal. Don't toss out that shit. I'd buy your tiger-repelling rock with real money. It makes me shed actual tears to read that, the kind you shed when your girlfriend wallops your balls with your Dreamcast and breaks both of treasured possesions in one irreversible act. Collectors want that stuff. God damn. I have a small collection of cool and weird games that has, over time, lost some items such as the ones you describe. I'd love the cart but the manual and box are great, too. If you have not yet tossed into the garbage, I'll be more than happy to take it off your hands. Shit, I need a fucking drink. Title: Re: Old Magazines. Post by: Signe on September 13, 2005, 08:23:01 AM I toss out everything I can. If a collector wants it, he can pick through my garbage. On the other hand, Righ keeps everything he can. I never touch his stuff in anger... or his junk either. I am very, very careful what I toss and always ask before I do. That doesn't stop me from wanting to throw EVERYTHING away! I have never walloped anyone's balls or even wanted to.
I hate clutter. It makes me cranky. Title: Re: Old Magazines. Post by: Yegolev on September 13, 2005, 09:10:20 AM I'm not saying I'm at all normal, being unhealthily obsessed with video games as I am, but I do collect game stuff and it breaks my soul to see someone abusing something I hold dear to my abnormal heart. I also have some useless shit like computer parts I'll likely never use, but for the most part I'm the one in the family that puts shit in the garbage when no-one is looking. I have done that with my wife's shoes, so you know I'm serious about it; after being hidden away for a couple months I assumed she wouldn't miss them and out they went. I used to be a packrat when I was young and poor but apparently I have matured. Life is funny. Still a collector of games and such, though.
Title: Re: Old Magazines. Post by: Bunk on September 13, 2005, 12:44:48 PM If you live in an apartment building, put the stack neatly in the lobby for a day or two. Then come down later and recycle anything that no one else takes. Thats what i did when i was moving.

Title: Re: Old Magazines. Post by: voodoolily on September 13, 2005, 04:05:58 PM If you live in Portland (or any other town that has hippies of any ilk) you should already know about "Freeboxing". What you do is put a box of crap, any crap at all, on a sidewalk that gets foot traffic. Put a sign that says "Free" on it. The shit will disappear. I've even ditched old furniture this way. It's like a magical crap fairy comes and just makes it go away for you.
Magazines are recyclable, and there may be a periodicals resale place in your town (but prolly not). I can sell backissues at a place called Periodicals Paradise for like a nickel apiece, and they also sell magazines at 75% the cover price. But I say Freebox it. Edit:btw, Strazos, your new avatar makes me very, very happy. :-D Title: Re: Old Magazines. Post by: Strazos on September 13, 2005, 08:45:00 PM What you do is put a box of crap, any crap at all, on a sidewalk that gets foot traffic. We don't really get "foot traffic" where I live. I just bundled them up and chucked them out by the trash. They weren't there when I got home the next day. I dunno what happened to them; someone picked them up for their own use, or the recycle people got it. Post by: Sky on September 19, 2005, 09:27:34 AM Ask your local library. We have a "recycle bin" here, a take what you want, leave what you don't type setup. Works great for both books and magazines. Periodically (sorry for pun) we clean it out and recycle the stuff ourselves or put it aside to sell at our annual fundraiser.

Title: Re: Old Magazines. Post by: Hanzii on September 24, 2005, 03:10:30 PM Well, they're more common here in the civilized world.
Title: Re: Old Magazines. Post by: Llava on September 24, 2005, 04:30:43 PM I hope it's not DAoC. I know it will be, but I hope it's not. If I'm completely new to MMOGs and want to give them a shot, and the book supposed to introduce me to the genre gives me DAoC... I'm not continuing my explorations into the genre.
This isn't because DAoC is a bad game (it may or may not be, that's opinion). But the character movement is so clunky compared to other games- it all feels clunky and outdated. Moving around in DAoC is so different from moving around in CoH, even putting aside travel powers, it's almost like two completely different genres. (I'm sure someone will chime in saying that that's probably not important, but it sure as hell was for me when I installed the free trial of DAoC a few months back to see the Catacombs graphics- I couldn't bring myself to play past level 2, I was already not having fun.) |
