Title: Comcast
Post by: Signe on August 30, 2005, 09:35:32 AM
I suggest everyone who uses Comcast call them RIGHT NOW and complain about something!  I did and they reduced my monthly basic service from $162.69 to $113.75.  If you simply complain that DSL is only $29.95 in your area, they'll reduce it to that.

This is good for a year and then we can dance again.

$162 a month for basic service? $113 is still too much.

Signe, less ppv porn and that bill will go down.

I'm trying to convince the people in my house that getting rid of TV altogether will be just fine. Let's just say Xbox > Tivo.

I know, it is a lot.    :-(  We have all that HD stuff, DVR, Internet and HBO and Cinemax through them.  Strange... I wanted to only get HBO as we don't much use the movie channels but the woman I talked to couldn't even find HBO alone.  I checked and you can get it alone, but it costs as much as with Cinemax in the package we get.  If we had been willing to give up HDTV and DVR, it would have been anothe5 $20-some off.

I'm much too shy to order porn, even when I'm alone.  Looking at people having sex is almost as scary as having it myself!  (yes, yes... Poor Righ... he copes.)

Let's just say that I couldn't disagree with you more. X-Box is a game console (we have had them since the 1970's, if you include Pong); TiVo is a religious experience.

I can turn on an option in iTunes to display similar graphics. Or did I miss something?

Xbox Media Center is a state of mind. It can play Any Divx/Ogg/WMV/MOV/whatever, connect to the web to download trailers, browse the iFilm database, play stuff off CD or be FTP'd into to play movies. My xbox plays more tv shows than games. Also, it outputs at a constant 1080i and upsamples video to that with pixel shading. The program is a monster.

Edit: And of course, it plays stuff over a network.

Can I watch Deadwood and all those Law and Order reruns I never saw with it?  Keep in mind, I'm not willing to buy these shows.  I'm only good for one sitting. They may be worth watching, but mostly not worth owning.

That will run you under $100 on DirecTV.  Break your boot off in Comcast's asshole.

Stuff about Xbox.

I need Venture Bros. and Galactica.

I can get internet from Direct TV?  If I cancel Comcast TV, my intenet goes up to $50 instead of $30.  DSL is about $30, but it's rather slow.  I find all Telecom companies to be equally evil, a bit like Oil companies, so the moral aspect is not relevant.

My bad, I am blind; didn't see "Internet" in the list.  Of course I have DSL via BellSouth and it is great but you can't get that just anywhere.  You actually can "get internet" via satellite, sort of.  Not something I'd recommend to anyone.  Down speed is great, but up is via dialup.  If all you do is download entire porn libraries from Usenet, this is your pipe.  Aside from that, there's a bit of delay due to the distances involved which makes it completely unsuitable for gaming.

I'm waiting on my tv to buy a 20' VGA cable to watch stuff.

But I hear the 360 will let me do that wirelessly much the way Schild described.

My house has Comcast. They just gave us some "promotional deal" where we get upgraded to digital cable and a DVR for really cheap for 6 months.

This means jack shit to me, seeing as I would have to use the TV in the den to get any benefit of this deal, and hence, leave my computer. Fuck that.

I have used internet via satellite in the UK and it was a dreadful experience.  Righ uses the internet every minute of every day he's home, both for work and play, except when he's asleep... which isn't often.  Until there's a better option in our area, I'll have to stick with Comcast.

I play this game every year, switching back and forth between Comcast and another local carrier (Millenium).  I'm constantly a "new subscriber," with all the 12-month discounted fees that go along with that.  They don't seem to care that I'm gaming the system, I suppose most other subscribers don't bother to switch back and forth.  Saves me a good $40 a month or so, I pay something like $60 a month for cable TV, HBO, cinemax, and cable internet.

At least where we live, we have Comcast. And that is it.

It doesn't look like you have to even actually switch to play the game, anymore.  All you have to do is threaten Comcast with switching and they'll pretty much lower the price of anything.  The only thing she couldn't lower was the HDTV and the DVR.

I do this with credit cards all the time.  Transfer balances and argue APRs.  I won't even bother with a credit card now, unless the APR is under 6%  I wouldn't use them at all, or would pay the balance off every month, but when you travel and move around as much as we do, it's hard not to.

Yea, that shit doesn't work that well. In fact, it's near useless except for news. Viva la kitchen TV.

That's what I use it for... kitchen gets DirecTV without wires via RCA splitters to the transmitter.  Plays hell with a wireless network if you aren't careful, though.
