Woman Who Claimed 'Shopaholic' Defense Gets Probation (http://www.thejacksonchannel.com/news/4885856/detail.html)

POSTED: 11:28 am CDT August 23, 2005

CHICAGO -- A Chicago woman who claimed a "shopaholic defense" is getting five years probation.

Elizabeth Roach said chronic depression led to wild shopping sprees that she financed with money she stole from work. She was accused of taking $250,000 from Andersen Consulting.

In 2001, she was placed on probation. But prosecutors challenged that sentence and an appeals court ordered her to serve at least a year in prison.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the guidelines used at that second sentencing weren't mandatory, so the judge could once again give her probation.

Roach has also been ordered to serve three months of work release, followed by nine months of home confinement.

Good thing she wasn't a dirty pot smoker. Then she'd do some hard time, dernit.

Honestly, even a year in prison seems kinda light for a quarter mil...Ken Lay must've thrown off the curve.

Panty Thief Gets 30 Years (http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/4897739/detail.html)
Grand Junction Man Apologizes To Victims

POSTED: 4:26 pm MDT August 25, 2005

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- A panty thief was sentenced Thursday in Grand Junction to 30 years in prison.

Thomas Lawrence Taylor apologized to his victims before he was sentenced and blamed his behavior on alchol use.

He was arrested in October 2004 after his pregnant wife turned him in. She called to report her suspicion that he was stealing underwear from young women in the Aspen Leaf Place apartment complex where he lived.

Police said they found 71 pairs of women's underwear in Taylor's apartment -- none of which belonged to his wife. Several women contacted by police in the apartment building identified some of the underwear as belonging to them.

Taylor was also accused of peeking under a bathroom stall to watch a 72-year-old woman urinate last January.

He was sentenced to consecutive terms totaling 30 years in prison for burglary, trespassing, unlawful sexual contact with an at–risk adult and two concurrent three-year terms for burglary and trespassing.

He could be released in 15 years with time off for good behavior.
