Sad, I always thought of him when I thought of news.

I prefer happy endings.  Alas.

I had no idea he was even ill.

Huh.

Damn.

That sucks. He was always the least douchebaggy of the 3 network anchors.

Lung cancer is bad news. Hopefully this will enlighten a smoker or two to quit before it is too late.

It seems so sudden because he'd only just found out 4 months ago.  Color me wowed and saddened at seeing him pass so soon.

My mom died 11 days after she was diagnosed with colon cancer. ELEVEN DAYS. She'd been having what I'll politely refer to as "digestive maladies" for a few months prior, but didn't think anything of it. The only reason she went to the hospital in the first place was because of a coincidal uterine prolapse. Sorry if that's TMI, but cancer has a way of sneaking up on people that never go to the doctor for a checkup.

Speaking of colon cancer, when you guys start having checkups for it (usually recommended at age 50), PLEASE be sure and get a full colonoscopy, not just a sigmoidoscopy. The former is a lot more expensive, but the latter catches only something like 20 percent of tumors. Since my mom was only 49 when she died, I have to start getting exams when I'm 35. Whee!

I think men start getting rectal exams way before 50. I'm guessing 40 or slightly earlier for prostate.

Woah. Sudden, count me in the camp of "I didn't even know he was sick".  Then again, I listen to NBC's news if I do at all.  Still, when I think of news, it's always been him, Brokaw and Rather for what's seemed like my entire life.

BTW, don't derail a death thread too heavily OK? This is a classy and helpful derail direction, but ya know, decorum and such.

I am old enough to remember Brinkley and Cronkite (can't remember who NBC's guy was back then), but those three have been the face of the news forEVER. I don't really watch network news any more, so the new generation will be lost on me.

Smart men anyway. I got my first one at 35. If I remember correctly, right about the time the risk of testicular cancer goes down, the risk of prostate and colon cancer goes up. Cancer sucks, and it's one of those things that doesn't eventually go away if you ignore it long enough. Well, I guess it does, but not in a good way. I can't wait for the helpful nanites that will infest out bodies clearing out tumors and circulatory blockage. Nanites for the win!

Oh, and people dying sucks. Sorry about your mom.

Jennings was one of the few mainstream journalists I had any respect for (and Rather is one I have no respect for). He always tried to be fair without being bland, which is something I don't see many people doing now. I still remember seeing him on ABC as the London anchor, before Brinkley left (I think it was Brinkley).
