Title: So much for those cool FRAPS vids.
Post by: Merusk on July 27, 2005, 08:03:54 AM
The RIAA doesn't want to play.  (http://www.rpgfilms.net)   Start saving those films now because you won't see them anywhere within the next few hours, I suspect.  While not killing FRAPs vids entirely, it does mean they're going to be a lot less interesting.  Yeah, you can still make them, just sans music or using only public domain works.. which still gets tricky because the RIAA has managed to get specific performances covered, even if the song is public domain. i.e. The London Symphony playing Beethoven's 5th.

I love democracy.  :heartbreak:

What else could they do?  Clearly rpgfilms.net was driving them to financial ruin.  A clear-cut case of self defense if I ever saw one.

Unfortunate but not unexpected. It's also unfortunate for those artists whose music were included on those videos. I've bought a few CDs (e.g. Chevelle and Green Day) I may not have otherwise bought just from hearing their songs on various videos.

Wait, you mean this site was hosting videos made of in-game activities that happened to have songs of artists like Korn and shit? And the RIAA took them down because they had the music on them?

WHAT... THE... FUCK?

Motherfucking douchebag shittardic cuntflapping munchkin-molesting dogfuckers. As in every member of the board fucks dogs in their spare time.

I have never seen an industry so goddamn determined to not allow anyone to see the produce of said industry in my life.

What's next, anime music videos?

What we need is one of those thirld world countries without copyright laws to start up a little hosting company, that way we can host anything we want, and the RIAA can't do shit about it.

My hope is that one of the biggies realizes that these sorts of things are essentially free advertising for multiple products on top of a kind of viral marketing, and just decides to tell the RIAA to go fuck themselves with thumbtack-encrusted dildos.

Maybe those viral networks already exist.  Or maybe the music on them is arse.  Discuss

I say its good news, maybe people will start putting some decent music in the videos now.   :-D

Copyright infringement is copyright infringement. Doesn't matter if it's an ice cream truck, a school playing a VHS tape, or some video game recording that some 12 year old added a Metallica song to.

If they were hosting the files they don't have a leg to stand on. The videos with infringing music will still get made just don't try to store them all in a central location. Why do you think P2P came about?

Don't like it? Join the EFF and boycott the motherfuckers not that it will do any good.

Was rpgfilms charging for this or was it mainly just hobbyists sharing cool stuff with each other?  Seems like the latter falls under fair use.  That's why Disney sues mom & pop daycares but not little Jimmy's birthday party.

Do I need to force my friends to send money to Itunes whenever I have them look over my shoulder playing a game with my favorite music in the background?  I guess I'll do it if I must.

I'm sure anime music vids will be next, afterall the kids wont need a cd if they just download 15 videos playing all the songs

It's not fair use. They received a DMCA notice because they were a central location. They may have been making money from banner ads but making money from it isn't a deciding factor. The term "financial gain" includes receipt, or expectation of receipt, of anything of value, including the receipt of other copyrighted works.

Basically you can send a DMCA notice for anything you want (you can even lie or be blatantly wrong). There is no penalty for sending a bogus one.

I'd say if they were hosting 600 movies that had copyrighted music in them they would be facing 3 years in prison (http://www.usdoj.gov/criminal/cybercrime/17-18red.htm) if the govt. chose to go after them. The govt. hardly ever uses the NET Act though.

This is AWESOME news.

This means that people won't be adding retarded, awful music to gameplay vids. I love it.

Thanks for once, RIAA. Thanks a bunch.

edit: i hope they go after car sites next, I could do without hearing linkin park while watching a burnout.

In ongoing news RIAA continues to mis-serve their clients. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4718249.stm)

Jesus christ.

Why spend money bribing radio stations to play your bands' songs in front of an audience, then sue other people for playing your bands' songs in front of an audience?

I don't fucking get it.

Do the people in charge have multiple personalities?

RIAA is all about milking their clients.

The RIAA doesn't really have any clients. The board members of the RIAA for profit corporation are the CEOs and other high mucky mucks from the 4 major record labels. It's basically a front to keep the major record labels from running afoul of antitrust laws, pretend they are a govt. organization, take all the heat from lobbying/enforcement, and keep the corporate owner's brand names clean. The head of the IFPI which is the international RIAA use to be the head of the RIAA.

The RIAA doesn't sue you because it doesn't hold any copyrights. The record label corporations sue you.

Correct.  The RIAA DOES like to issue lots of warnings regarding the DMCA, etc, tho, and threaten lawsuits.

I think the responses to the questions in that interview were even more worthless than White House press releases.  Holy fuck.

That it was a hoax just makes me dissapointed in humanity in all new ways.  I really need to look into land prices in Montana.

I have bought 4 CDs as a direct result of hearing songs on FRAPS vids... idiots.
