"I've never worked with another woman programmer," says Yap, 28, who has been at three companies in six years. She likes her male co-workers at Midway Home Entertainment Inc. in San Diego, but "sometimes it gets lonely."

Tends to be true of any technology or hard sciences job.

And the reason isn't solely the men already in those fields. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misogynistic)

She just needs to bleach her hair and get a boob job. Maybe suck up to a self-important windbag with a ratty hairdo.

I feel female dev's image was set back at least a decade by the incomprehensible inclusion of Stevie Case in PC Gamer's pantheon of 'gaming gods', alongside folks like Garriot and Wright. Whawhawha?

Of course she's a gaming goddess.  Ever goddess ever depicted in video games look like her ^^

When did women become an adjective? God I hate that. You can't say "man devs." Everyone does it these days. It's FEMALE devs, not women devs.

That's my entire contribution to this topic.

You can say "man breasts".  Why not "woman devs"?

Because the appropriate analog to "man breasts" is "breasts" or "boobies," and therefore it breaks down?  Please do not sully boobies in a semantic game kthx.

Um, if your game sucks ass I don't care if the dev had boobies or not. Thanks.

And conversely, if your game has boobies, the general public doesn't care if the devs sucked ass or not.

Finally! I knew there would be a day when I could count myself to the general public, and the day has finally come! Huzzah!

Stop citing studies with shitty protocols and way-too-fucking-small population samples.

I really enjoed the 2 paragraphs about San Andras at the start of the article and the bits thrown in throughout. That was really related to 'women in gaming' and not at all an attempt to link that story in to get a better readership. Newp, not at all.

The biggest problem I have with most of the "women in __" articles is avoided here, at least.  Probably because there aren't enough women to begin with, so you can't really point at it.   That problem being when it's said, "Despite having XX% of women, only YY% are in management or upper management positions."  Such lines usually ignore the actual years in the field those in management have, compared to the % of females with similar experience..   Again, there's lies, damned lies, and statistics.

Not going to happen. Research is a dead art in mainstream journalism. Mainstream journalists are either too lazy or too afraid of having to learn jargon to find out real facts, so they foist it off on the latest paid-for-survey they can find. Any mainstream article that references more than 2 studies is a rare one indeed.

That part about GTA was thrown in there in the shittiest way possible.

But big shock, there's few women game devs, even fewer as a percentage of total workers than in other high-tech programming fields. Why? Because up until possibly the last few years, not only were games NOT made for women, or with women as an audience in mind, mainstream culture looked at video games as a guy thing. Seriously, in my age bracket, there were almost no women I knew that progressed beyond the Ms. Pac-Man stage of gaming. But as the younger kids grow up with 1-3 gaming devices in their houses (console and PC), there will be more women who will want games that are not geared solely towards men.

Games are meant ultimately as a lesbian filter... find a girl that likes games with all the boobies and lvl 60 elven women in chainmail thongs, and then make a pathetic gamer pick-up line, and if it works, you have the ultimate girlfriend. Brilliant.

Thanks for that link :  It provided me with this insight :

Anal Cunt, a noisecore shock band (in)famous for their intentionally offensive lyrics, often write songs with mysogynistic themes such as "Women: Nature's Punching Bag", "You're Pregnant, So I Kicked You In the Stomach", and "I Became a Counselor So I Could Tell Rape Victims They Asked For It".

Classy.

There's a shitty punk band named "The Meatshits" that has a song about the Beatles (before the most recent death) called "One down, Three to go".

That's about the only thing worth remembering about them.

No, that would be the Meatmen, and the album is "Rock & Roll Juggernaut".  They are also the maestros behind "Camel Jockeys Suck" and "French People Suck" along with other classics like "Lesbian Death Dirge", "War of the Superbikes", "Tooling for Anus", and "Centurions of Rome".
