Title: Scotty Beams Up Post by: Evangolis on July 20, 2005, 09:44:00 AM James Doohan is dead at age 85. Here's an obit. (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8643634/)
I liked him best of the whole lot. Not that I didn't drool over Nichelle Nichols, but Scotty was just fun. Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: Strazos on July 20, 2005, 09:46:50 AM Bah, lame.
Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: WayAbvPar on July 20, 2005, 09:47:07 AM That sucks. I  Scotty.
Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: Evangolis on July 20, 2005, 09:57:02 AM 85 and Alzhiemers, and a hell of a bio. I should die so well. I'm sorry to lose him, but everybody dies, and most live worse than he did. I'm just glad he got past the six bullets on Juno Beach. That would have been a tragedy, and we'd have never even known it.
Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: stray on July 20, 2005, 09:59:02 AM The REAL Playa of the Star Trek cast. RIP.
Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: Furiously on July 20, 2005, 10:05:42 AM It would be the year I didn't have him on my deadpool list.
Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: HaemishM on July 20, 2005, 10:11:29 AM me = /sadf
Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: Pococurante on July 20, 2005, 10:18:36 AM Of all the players he struck me as being the decent natural human being. Heck I liked him if for no other reason he saw battle in WW2.
Quote While leading his men into battle on D-Day, Doohan was wounded in the leg and hand, and eventually lost a finger. For the remainder of the war, he became a pilot observer, and received the dubious distinction of being called the "craziest pilot in the Canadian Air Forces." Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: Fargull on July 20, 2005, 10:20:51 AM Holy crap.
"At 19, James escaped the turmoil at home by joining the Canadian army, becoming a lieutenant in artillery. He was among the Canadian forces that landed on Juno Beach on D-Day. “The sea was rough,” he recalled. “We were more afraid of drowning than the Germans.” The Canadians crossed a minefield laid for tanks; the soldiers weren’t heavy enough to detonate the bombs. At 11:30 that night, he was machine-gunned, taking six hits: one that took off his middle right finger (he managed to hide the missing finger on the screen), four in his leg and one in the chest. Fortunately the chest bullet was stopped by his silver cigarette case." Had no idea. Damn, will have to raise a toast to him this evening. Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: Xanthippe on July 20, 2005, 10:23:31 AM
Quote In 1974 he married Wende Braunberger, and their children were Eric, Thomas and Sarah, who was born in 2000, when Doohan was 80. I wonder how old Wende is? Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: Furiously on July 20, 2005, 10:29:08 AM I'll agree with that - from what I have read about him - he was one of the most sincere and grounded members of the cast.
I'm sad to think I'll never hear him say, "I'm givin it all she's got capt." in another movie. Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: Llava on July 20, 2005, 10:43:28 AM "Fortunately the chest bullet was stopped by his silver cigarette case." That's when you know you're born to act. Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: ClydeJr on July 20, 2005, 11:55:53 AM I like how it sounds like he didn't mind that he was typecast and he'd be remembered as Scotty forever. He just decided to go with the flow and enjoy his life.
Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: Bunk on July 20, 2005, 12:07:01 PM Everything I've ever heard said he was a good man. So here's to Jimmy Doohan.
Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: Riggswolfe on July 20, 2005, 01:19:17 PM Damn we're really starting to lose too many icons of my youth. I feel so..old. I feel like Kirk in Star Trek 2. Hell I'm going to the eye doctor this week and my friends predict I'll be getting reading glasses.
He was a decent actor and a good man. Hears to James Doohan! Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: El Gallo on July 20, 2005, 02:53:55 PM When it's my turn to beam up to the great transporter in the sky, I hope my bio sounds 1/10th as cool. Godspeed. Mr. Doohan.
Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: Roac on July 20, 2005, 03:00:19 PM Well, shit. :heartbreak:
Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: Furiously on July 20, 2005, 03:22:30 PM He had a kid at 80! talk about impressive!
Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: Merusk on July 20, 2005, 03:23:32 PM Jimmy, ya were a man, a hero and one hell of a guy. Godspeed and good wishes.
Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: Evangolis on July 20, 2005, 04:30:20 PM Doohan's ashes to be sent into space. (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8647281/)
Ordinarily I'd think this a bit goofy. In this case it seems proper. Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: Strazos on July 20, 2005, 04:34:25 PM I never knew there were only 3 seasons of "Star Trek."
Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: stray on July 20, 2005, 04:42:18 PM I never knew there were only 3 seasons of "Star Trek." Yup...It was a failure when it was aired, but gained a giant following in the 70's through reruns. Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: Evangolis on July 20, 2005, 09:56:55 PM I never knew there were only 3 seasons of "Star Trek." Yup...It was a failure when it was aired, but gained a giant following in the 70's through reruns. More like it wasn't a success. It didn't rock the world, but I watched it religiously as a kid, and it got ok ratings. But it wasn't Wagon Train in Space, which was what the networks were promised, and it wasn't big enough to be as different as it was, so they canned it. Fools. Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: HaemishM on July 21, 2005, 08:34:30 AM I never knew there were only 3 seasons of "Star Trek." And all of them better than Voyager. Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: Strazos on July 21, 2005, 09:54:34 AM Voyager had its moments...especially once Jeri Ryan joined, rawr.
Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: stray on July 21, 2005, 10:09:35 AM I didn't watch Star Trek until Voyager came around, so I guess I'll have to say that I liked it more than others. It got me to watch everything else. I still don't like the first series though. The movies are what got me to appreciate the original cast.
Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: voodoolily on July 21, 2005, 10:12:32 AM I watched NExt Gen when I was in middle school 'cuz I had a raging crush on Wil Wheaton. Please don't laugh. Besides, Jean-Luke was the best cap'n EVAR.
Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: Pococurante on July 21, 2005, 10:20:37 AM Quote Besides, Jean-Luke was the best cap'n EVAR. I still find myself straightening my shirt, just like him. :P Stewart IRL is so over the top he makes Shatner look like Sir Alec Guinness. Wil Wheaton... /snicker (http://www.sequentialtart.com/images/0504/wheaton_1.jpg) Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: voodoolily on July 21, 2005, 10:27:05 AM God, Stand By Me was a 12-year-old girl's beatfest. River Phoenix was never as hot as he was in that movie (creepy, I know, but then he got all pimply and strung out and died). That, and The Outsiders.
What does IRL mean? My intarcabulary is still in its infancy. Patrick Stewart makes Sean Connery look like Gary Busey. Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: Strazos on July 21, 2005, 10:28:57 AM Shut up, Stewart is the man. (http://picard.ytmnd.com/)
Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: Furiously on July 21, 2005, 10:30:09 AM IRL = In Real Life.
Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: stray on July 21, 2005, 10:32:50 AM Go ahead, point and laugh, but honestly, I think Janeway would kick of all of their asses. She has one tactic -- Trap the opponent and turn on Self Destruct (and she's not playing around, like Kirk does). Nothing stops a suicidal bitch.
Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: Strazos on July 21, 2005, 10:36:17 AM I dunno, the Riker Maneuver is pretty beast...
-Warp up into their face, and unload weapons. Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: WayAbvPar on July 21, 2005, 10:53:27 AM I just love how every time Riker got command of the ship, he would find an excuse to blow the fuck out of something.
I couldn't stand Wil Wheaton on Star Trek. I am a big fan of his now, mostly because of his blog (http://wilwheaton.net/). He is a pretty gifted writer. Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: voodoolily on July 21, 2005, 11:27:29 AM I heard a hi-fucking-larious story last summer of a coked-out Wil Wheaton in a hot tub at a party, complaining loudly to whoever would listen that no one would give him a blow job.
Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: WayAbvPar on July 21, 2005, 12:07:16 PM I don't claim to know him or his personal habits, but from every impression I get, that would be completely out of character. Are you sure it wasn't Corey Feldman? I can totally see that
Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: HaemishM on July 21, 2005, 12:50:17 PM Maybe it was Neil Patrick Harris?
Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: voodoolily on July 21, 2005, 01:09:26 PM No, it was Wil Wheaton. Which is why the story is so funny. And it comes from a very reputable source.
Title: Re: Scotty Beams Up Post by: Murgos on July 22, 2005, 06:51:57 AM Go ahead, point and laugh, but honestly, I think Janeway would kick of all of their asses. I'd bet Janeway can't do this (http://www.sonymusiceurope.com/cgi-bin/multimedia/wmwax?wm.sony-local.global.speedera.net&wm.sony-local.global/w/william_shatner/common_people_high.wma). |
