TAMPA -- A construction worker was killed when he was pulled through a wood chipper as he tried to clear it free of jammed tree cuttings.

The man, whose name was not released, may have been trying to use his feet to push debris through the machine Wednesday, authorities said.

``These are incredibly dangerous types of equipment. Usually what happens is something gets stuck, and the victim tries to clear it with his hand or foot, then they get pulled in,'' Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office spokesman J. D. Callaway said.

No one saw the man, who was in his mid-40s and lived in Tampa, pulled into the machine, Callaway said.

James Hardman said the man had worked for his company, James Hardman Construction, for about a year.

Hardman said he turned off the chipper when he realized what had happened.

A Tampa tree trimmer was killed in 2004 when he climbed into a wood chipper and kicked a large bundle of branches through it.

See, smart man.  Must be why it's his name on the company letterhead, rather than the guy who tried to un-stick the woodchipper while it was running.

Yup, them power tools...had my own personal moment of dumbassery a couple days ago when I got too lazy to put the guard back on my table saw for the last couple of cuts (I took it off to run a piece of slightly-too-thick stock through).

Now,  I always keep well clear of the blade, but I forgot how hard that sumbitch can kick back a chunk of wood.  Tore off half a fingernail and got me a bunch of stitches in two fingertips.

As you may surmise, this is rather hard to type with one bandaged hand...but hurrah for Percocets!

Well at least he succeeded clearing out wood chipper -I imagine it would have no problems shredding human body.

LOVELAND - A man who works for a commercial tree trimming company was killed Wednesday when he fell into the shredder.

The accident happened at a work site near the intersection of Wilson Avenue and Fountain Driver.  OSHA, the federal agency that investigates accidents that happen on the job, has been called to investigate.

The name of the worker who was killed hasn't been released.  He worked for Brian's Tree Trimming and Removal Service.   Loveland Police will have more information later today.

I wonder if human mulch is any good for shrubbery.

Human Mulch is the best possible fertilizer. On that note, what a way to go.
