Title: worse than spam Post by: RipSnort on April 26, 2004, 01:45:20 PM I have a website whose server I get my email through. Recently I've been getting emails from administration@[myuyrl].com or management@[my url].com with alerts saying there has been unauthorized acces to your email acount with directions to open the attachment to correct. I'm guessing the attachment is some kind of bot that farms email addresses from the site or the other. To me this is worse than spam, certainly illegal to impersonate the administrator of a website. I'd definitely like to forward these to some organization who have the means to track these pricks down. All my efforts have failed with trace routes and the like. Blocking the forged ip address doesn't prevent them from getting through. Was wondering if anyone else has seen these kinds of email or know a good organization to forward them to.
Title: worse than spam Post by: HaemishM on April 26, 2004, 02:11:44 PM It's likely a trojan or virus, more than just an email collector. And there are organizations to deal with this, it's called the FBI. Just call your local office and get on the phone with the Computer Crimes Division.

Title: worse than spam Post by: HaemishM on April 26, 2004, 02:50:32 PM Apparently, I'm the only surviving relative of the ruler of an African country who just died in a plane crash, leaving millions of dollars unclaimed in the bank. I wonder if my brother also got the same email. I may have to kill him to make sure I retain my claim on the money.

Title: worse than spam Post by: Ezdaar on April 26, 2004, 04:06:38 PM As mentioned it's likely a variant of the Bagel virus. We get a hojillion messages a day at our support address from users replying to the message saying "I ran the attachment but nothing happened!!11".

Title: worse than spam Post by: SurfD on April 27, 2004, 01:12:18 AM I really, really wish there was a job position where you could get payed for telling people like that (in as many creative and entertaining words as possible) exactly how many kinds of idiot they are and where they should go for help.
Sometimes you really have to offend someone to the point of frothing rage before they will wake up and realise they are an idiot (of course, some of them will never learn). Then you can point them in the direction of the proper tutorials and resources to get themselves educated. Too bad a job like that is guaranteed to never happen. Tell them the attachment identifies and punishes the stupid, and works just fine, thanks. Title: worse than spam Post by: RipSnort on April 27, 2004, 07:42:14 AM I called te cyber crimes division. Basically unless my site was comprimised and damage was of at least $5000 or someone threatens you personally with intent to harm they can't do much about it. Although I have to say the agent was accomodating and didn't mind shootin the shit with me about it.
My host provides an email blocker for my server in which you add IP's to the list you want blocked. I wish I could reverse that and list only the emails I want to come through. I thought that was most government jobs. Title: worse than spam Post by: UD_Delt on April 27, 2004, 08:20:05 AM I've been getting a lot of weird spam at my work address lately. I've been getting message that are aliased as "MS Corporation Technical Assistance" to "Microsoft Partner". The actual return address is always some random characters @advisor.net which is some discontinued personal wealth site.
The email usually contains an .exe or .bat like the most recent one: awhvs.bat. All the attachments are stripped by our companies filter but its still annoying since I'm getting 2-3 of these a day. Title: worse than spam Post by: Aslan on April 28, 2004, 07:02:41 AM Quote I thought that was most government jobs. Mmm goverment jobs. Fun, if you can stand only getting paid once a freaking month. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go take an hour-long shit before I go to lunch. If anyone needs me, I'll be back about half an hour before quitting time, I need my nap. |
