Title: Strazos in Rome. Post by: Strazos on May 26, 2005, 03:01:06 PM For those of you who
Unfortunately, I don't have many good pictures yet; Just some shit I took on the flight from London-Heathrow to FCO-Rome. Honestly, I have either been to tired too take pictures, or I just haven't had the camera with me when there have been good oppurtunites. The blog will be at strazos.4tehwin.org (http://strazos.4tehwin.org) You can see the pics I have uploaded at http://strazos.4tehwin.org/wp-images/Rome/ The blog still needs to be configured, but I'd like to thank Shockeye and Haemish for getting it back up and running. PS: Yes, I know - The pictures I did take were pretty lame, but give me a break. I had had all kinds of fun just getting on my first flight out of the US. You can read all about that, and more, soon enough, once I get a chance to get everything properly set up. Don't miss me too much. Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. Post by: schild on May 26, 2005, 06:10:13 PM Dude. How did you get to the top of the Alps, sprout metal wing contraptions and fly over France.
That's damned impressive. TAKE BETTER PICTURES. Glad to see you're alive. Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. Post by: Strazos on May 26, 2005, 06:30:43 PM Heh...I would have liked to have gotten better pictures above Paris and Geneva, but as you can see, it was very cloudy. I also would have taken some above/around FCO-Roma (or Leonardo da'Vinci Int'l), but the flight attendants wanted all electronics off during our descent (?), and there wasn't really anything picture-worthy inside the airport, or the train ride from there into Roma.
Anyway, I'm going back to Plazza Venezia this weekend, this time with my camara. Some of the stuff there...I don't really have words for it. Oh yeah, the Coliseum and Forums are there also, among other things. Then you shall see my crazy photography skills. PS: It's ~3:30am here...Late-night TV in Roma is....a bit crazy... Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. Post by: schild on May 26, 2005, 06:46:40 PM Stop calling it Roma you fucking Yankee.

Post by: NiX on May 27, 2005, 12:21:54 AM Strazos, we could of used you in thirsty river. You're such a selfish asshole going off to Europe like that. Douche.
Hope you're having a good time thus far and yes, you do need to take better pictures. Even if it's of your own two feet. I'm serious. I did that for my trip to LA. By the way. what camera are you using? Those are relatively nice quality pictures at an affordable price! Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. Post by: SuperPopTart on May 27, 2005, 08:52:25 AM You are such a Dweezil.
Strazos! I had to /petname Petling something else other than Bye Strazos, it was making me too sad. And we did just fine in Thirsty River, of course you idiots made me your monk which I am sure stupified the group and made them blink and ask "WTF"! And nice pictures, could ya next time take a picture of something that is on land? Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. Post by: Signe on May 27, 2005, 10:58:06 AM Have a lovely time. Don't drink the water... anywhere. I miss you desperately.

I'm using a decent Kodak digital, which takes GREAT pictures. In fact, my mother is having a picture of her's published in some amateur photography book, using this camera. What I will do from here on is simply upload them as a .zip, unalterated; The ones I put up first I had reduced to 45% of their original size.
So tonight, I have for you ~100 pictures from the Capatoline Museums, unedited and uploaded as a 101MB .zip. It's still uploading as I type...I'm only getting ~75kb/s upstream from here to wherever our servers are. You'll have to excuse a few of them; the dark ones are due to the restriction on flashes within the building. Some of them are also a little blurry, either from random chance that I didn't notice as I reviewed each shot, or because I had to hold the camera at odd positions to take some of the shots. Anyway, Saturday afternoon I'm heading back down to Piazza Venezia, to tour the Collesium, Palpatine Hill, and the Forums. Hopefully, the weather will be good and my camara's memory holds out (the weather has been hot, but beautiful). I'll try to swing by and get more pictures of the Vittorio Emanuele II Monument (read: Big Ass White Building). I think that's all for now... PS: I'm on the right, in black, in the one photos outside, in front of one of the monuments (Ceasar? I forget ATM). PS2: Signe, the fountain-things on the streets of Rome: the water seems fine. Better than the water we have in our apt. PS3: Haha, Stray.....Anyway, for those too lazy to Google it, I believe the Latin SPQR means, roughly "Made by the people of Roma"...I'm kind of guessing (I didn't cheat and google it). PS4: I blog some of the shit that's been happening soon, I promise. Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. Post by: SuperPopTart on May 27, 2005, 05:20:57 PM If Memory Serves..
And it usually doesn't. Senatus Populusque Romanorum or..Senatus Populusque Quiritum Romanorum The Senate and The Roman People.. something like that. Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. Post by: Strazos on May 27, 2005, 05:29:32 PM Who the fuck knows... (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPQR)

Did you get out there in time to watch the European Cup final with Italians? I had the good fortune to be in Bologna this week, seems a lot of Italians don't much like AC Milan. I'm too tired to blog, so I'll leave you with that. Tell me what you think, see ya....I gotta get some sleep so I have the energy for the Roma/Verona game. Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. Post by: Signe on May 29, 2005, 07:17:53 AM You're not giving us much of a chance to miss you. :-P
Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. Post by: Strazos on May 29, 2005, 12:57:15 PM I won't be on TeamSpeak for ~1 month; That in itself should be more than enough.
Anyway, went to the game today, and it was awesome. No pictures, as I didn't bring my camara. I did have a friend use a disposable, so I'll try to upload them when I get back to the states. AS Roma made the playoffs here, and I'm going to try to go to a playoff game, if for no other reason, to see more people throw bottles at the riot guards. Bought a sweetass Diadora RS Roma shirt too. In other news, many chicks still think I'm   "Such a nice guy."  Let that be a lesson to you ladies out there; If you want to emotionally stab someone in the chest, say they're nice...gets me every time. :| Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. Post by: Signe on May 29, 2005, 02:40:02 PM You should buy a Ferrari while you're in Italy. You should be able to get a good deal. Fiat is about to go broke... for good this time, maybe. The first thing they'll probably dump is Ferrari... and the Formula One team.

Post by: SuperPopTart on May 31, 2005, 04:11:20 PM I am not sure why being "Just friends" is such a horrific thing for men. I mean "Friends" can lead to "Couple" if you play your cards right, be patient and caring and just oh..I don't know.. wait a damn minute. Sheesh.
Now granted..more times than not do friends lead nowhere but.. I know some great relationships that started out as "Eh, just friends". Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. Sheesh. 99.9999999999% of the time, Just Friends for a woman means "there are no possible circumstances under which I would ever have sex with you". Unfortunately, Just Friends for a man means "I want to have sex with you, but haven't figured out how to do it yet. Also, I am a pussy." Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. Post by: SuperPopTart on May 31, 2005, 04:20:42 PM Well see, here is the thing. If you are what is viewed as a "typical male" which means sex on the brain 21312312312 hours out of a 24 hour day, and the girl you are trying to date knows this about you, why in the world would she now trust you have the capacity to be anything else but a friend. I mean I am of the belief that you represent yourself honestly. If you just want to have sex say "Hey, I don't mind being just friends but has the thought of sexual activity with me ever crossed your mind?"
And hope you don't get smacked. Also.. it depends HOW she says she wants to be "Just friends". There are multiple ways. I.E. "Awwww how adorable! I really think we are better off as friends" Translation: Sorry, you aren't on my level. Never, ever would I date you because I think of you as I do my little brother. Inferior and well, just...cute. Too bad, so sad. There are multiple ways of seeing this. Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. Post by: Shockeye on May 31, 2005, 04:22:42 PM There are multiple ways of seeing this. This is most likely a scam. They tried to pull the same crap on me. You send them a photo and they tell you you "won". At this point they say they are going to publish your photo in a book of amateur photos. Except the only people they are selling the book to is the people who submitted photos in the first place. So they probably do send you a book with everyone's photo in it for $50 but the only people that are going to see it are people who submitted photos. Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. Post by: Paelos on June 01, 2005, 10:02:26 AM The ladder theory holds pretty true. Most of the time, making women friends as a dating strategy is useless. There are obvious exceptions, but I'd say 4/5 times you make "friends" with a woman you are remotely interested in, you get squat.
It does go a little overboard on how being a dick makes you golden with chicks. That only works if you are hot first. If you're a gargolye, being an asshole won't help. Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. Post by: HaemishM on June 01, 2005, 10:20:10 AM I can't read the Ladder Theory at work, but I can say from much personal experience, the "friends" angle does not work, at least not if your intention in being a friend is to get into some form of more than friendly relationship with the woman. You either become too friendly, and are seen as a brother, or you never can make it that extra step. You're better off just telling the chick, "I like you, I want to date you, I don't want to just pal around." If sex (whether immediate or eventual) is in anyway one of your intentions, you need to make that known upfront. Not "I want to bone you," but "I want us to be more than friends" right up front.
See, I think women are much more open to who they sleep with, because they always have options. Even uggos can get boned if they really want to sling the poonanny around. So, as a result, they can afford to be reactive, to wait until a guy they want to bone comes around. They can afford to be friends with guys. Guys on the other hand feel that decidedly urgent need to get while the getting's good on their all too brief sexual peak, so feel they can't afford to pass up any opportunity. Cue PopTart calling me a chauvinist pig in 5... 4... 3... 2... 1 Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. Post by: SuperPopTart on June 01, 2005, 10:49:02 AM lol I would never.
You are only a MCP half the time :P. But I think I am a lot more lenient as to what constitutes an MCP anyhow. I think if a person has the confidence to say "Hey, I want to date you. Would you be interested in that?" is much more beautiful and passable than someone who pussy foots around about it saying "Uh hey.. would you ever consider being more than friends?" It's confidence. It is amazing what confidence can do for you and just how much it can turn a "No." into a "Sure!" for some people. Men and Women always have options. I think it's equals. It's just seen otherwise. Yes, which is why I'm now going to call you on this. :-D I upload them in .zip format because: 1) It's easy 2) It's quick For you, perhaps, but not for your audience. And it shouldn't even be easier for you, really. What are you using to upload your pictures that makes it so hard to do multiple files? With command line FTP you can do "put *". With a GUI FTP client you can drag and drop a full directory in one shot. Quote 3) It takes up less space, and I have no idea how much Shockeye was kind enough to actually give me. JPG is a compressed format, so the benefit to zipping them up is pretty low. And doing them all in one big chunk probably increases bandwidth costs overall, since it means that people have to download your entire archive of pictures to view one of them. Did I leave anything out? Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. Post by: schild on June 07, 2005, 09:23:41 AM I was mildly curious about your pictures until I found them. WinXP ftp should be started in cmd like "ftp -i" so that when you do "mput *" it does not ask for confirmation. Sometimes compressing compressed things makes them bigger. Real men use RAR. Post by: Samwise on June 07, 2005, 01:47:00 PM Back on the subject of displaying the fruits of your photographic labor on teh Intarweb, another way to make things easy on the reader is thumbnailing. It might seem counterintuitive that putting extra data on your website will save on bandwidth, but it does because people no longer have to download each full-sized picture to see them all. I actually wrote my own thumbnailer (http://www.leadtogold.com/software/webthumb/index2.html) a while back because I have family members on dialup who were finding it painful to click through all of my high-resolution photos.

Post by: Samwise on June 07, 2005, 04:44:41 PM No, he means that when he's uploading his pictures, he'd have to upload them one at a time if he didn't do the ZIP thing.
I'm fairly certain that this assertion is patently ridiculous, since it seems like the software in question is meant to allow you to mirror entire directories of files automatically. It'd be pretty hard to do that if you had to upload each file individually. (edit) From what I'm seeing, now that I poke around their site a bit more, it looks like you could set this thing up to run on your laptop (or whatever) and just automatically upload your pictures to your website as soon as they're retrieved from the camera. Depending on how your camera interfaces with a PC, you might even be able to get it so that as soon as you plug the camera in, it automatically uploads right from the camera without any intermediate step. But if it's "easier" to put everything in a ZIP file I guess that's cool too. Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. Post by: Samwise on June 09, 2005, 07:38:22 PM So your browser depends on having quotation marks around every string attribute in a tag? I've never heard of any browser requiring that. Not even Opera, which is psychopathic in its adherence to the HTML spec. (Although now that I look at it, the HTML 4.0 spec does seem to require quotes if you have underscores in the string, so what do you know.)
If it will make your neurotic browser happy, I'll change my program to throw quotes around everything. Tomorrow. I'm going to play GTA now. As a temporary workaround, I repeat my earlier recommendation of switching to a better browser. Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. Post by: Viin on June 09, 2005, 07:45:54 PM Yah it is kinda funky actually, and I'll bug it for Firefox to see if they can make it play nice.
I think it's actually the \, I think it's counting that as though you want to escape something rather than include it in the path to the image itself. Anywho, I'm sure I could use an inferior browser if I felt like lowering myself to that level. Funny that Opera works. Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. Make sure you go to the Villa Borghese museum. You can walk to it from the Spagna metro stop. It requires telephone reservations a day or two in advance, but it's well worth the visit. Also, try to find a restaurant called "Alfredo's (in the Pantheon area, I think) http://www.alfredos.com/roma.html Best fettucine alfredo I have ever tasted, and it's not even close. They apparently invented it. Most food in Rome is absolute crap, so this place was a huge boost to our trip. Also, remember to drink your espressos or cappucinos standing at the bars as the locals do. It'll only cost about .8 euros each that way versus 2 to 4 euros at a table. PS. Get to Venice if you can. Absolutely ridiculously cool. It's literally like travelling back in time 400 years. Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. Post by: Furiously on June 14, 2005, 01:20:37 AM Anarchy Online - at release?

I'll have the try this restaraunt, along with another someone suggested earlier within this thread. Just as you just said, Roman food is very....meh. Exception so far: Ristorante da Cesare, out sorta-kinda-but-not-really near the Vatican (Via Crescenzio 13 if anyone cares). The food was pretty darn good, especially my antipasta, which looked like poop on a cracker, but tasted great. I later found out it was a meat sauce made from chicken liver...good stuff. And I'll be in Venice for a day/night right after I am done in Roma. PS: I actually haven't been drinking a whole lot of coffee...mostly a metric fuckton of Gatorade/Powerade, with some water too...but it Has to be Naturale, not that fizzy shit; It makes me sick trying to drink it. I am absolutly pitiful at "small talk." Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. Post by: schild on June 26, 2005, 03:57:24 PM I luv Strazos and his writing. But I also want his train to get hijacked and shit. So i voted twice.
Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. Post by: schild on June 26, 2005, 03:58:06 PM Oh and everyone would love you if you'd never said "Roma."
Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. Post by: Strazos on June 26, 2005, 04:05:07 PM Your wish is my command; No More Roma.
I leave Rome Tuesday morning. Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. Post by: Toast on June 27, 2005, 08:36:19 AM Roma is ok by me as long as the entire sentence it is used in is Italian.
Example: Roma es bella. Have fun in Venice. I guess that gives you just enough time to frolic with the pigeons at San Marco. If you go in St Mark's cathedral (which is amazing), There is a steep little "secret" stairway on the right that goes up to a second story. Absolutely go up there. Title: Re: Strazos in Rome. I may do a blog posting. Posting from a Parisian internet cafe, and using a French non-QWERTY kb is Tough. From here on out, no pics will be thumbnailed until I get home; I am unable to run Samwise's Webthumb utility. I believe I return home on July 9th. EDIT: Another post up. Sorry if it's not very complete or "full,"but I have shit to do, ya know? Amsterdam is awaiting. Poll Results = :| Title: Re: Strazos in Rome.
