For those of you who give a shit or are fucking bored who are curious, I've finally started my whole "European" blog...thing. It going to kind of be a journal of the shit that happens around me while I'm out here in Rome, Italy, and while travelling around Europe.

Unfortunately, I don't have many good pictures yet; Just some shit I took on the flight from London-Heathrow to FCO-Rome. Honestly, I have either been to tired too take pictures, or I just haven't had the camera with me when there have been good oppurtunites.

Heh...I would have liked to have gotten better pictures above Paris and Geneva, but as you can see, it was very cloudy. I also would have taken some above/around FCO-Roma (or Leonardo da'Vinci Int'l), but the flight attendants wanted all electronics off during our descent (?), and there wasn't really anything picture-worthy inside the airport, or the train ride from there into Roma.

Anyway, I'm going back to Plazza Venezia this weekend, this time with my camara. Some of the stuff there...I don't really have words for it. Oh yeah, the Coliseum and Forums are there also, among other things. Then you shall see my crazy photography skills.

PS: It's ~3:30am here...Late-night TV in Roma is....a bit crazy...

Yeah yeah, gimme a break about the pictures. I'm using a decent Kodak digital, which takes GREAT pictures. In fact, my mother is having a picture of her's published in some amateur photography book, using this camera. What I will do from here on is simply upload them as a .zip, unalterated; The ones I put up first I had reduced to 45% of their original size.

So tonight, I have for you ~100 pictures from the Capatoline Museums, unedited and uploaded as a 101MB .zip. It's still uploading as I type...I'm only getting ~75kb/s upstream from here to wherever our servers are.

You'll have to excuse a few of them; the dark ones are due to the restriction on flashes within the building. Some of them are also a little blurry, either from random chance that I didn't notice as I reviewed each shot, or because I had to hold the camera at odd positions to take some of the shots.

Anyway, Saturday afternoon I'm heading back down to Piazza Venezia, to tour the Collesium, Palpatine Hill, and the Forums. Hopefully, the weather will be good and my camara's memory holds out (the weather has been hot, but beautiful). I'll try to swing by and get more pictures of the Vittorio Emanuele II Monument (read: Big Ass White Building).

AS Roma made the playoffs here, and I'm going to try to go to a playoff game, if for no other reason, to see more people throw bottles at the riot guards.

The ladder theory holds pretty true. Most of the time, making women friends as a dating strategy is useless. There are obvious exceptions, but I'd say 4/5 times you make "friends" with a woman you are remotely interested in, you get squat.

I can't read the Ladder Theory at work, but I can say from much personal experience, the "friends" angle does not work, at least not if your intention in being a friend is to get into some form of more than friendly relationship with the woman. You either become too friendly, and are seen as a brother, or you never can make it that extra step. You're better off just telling the chick, "I like you, I want to date you, I don't want to just pal around." If sex (whether immediate or eventual) is in anyway one of your intentions, you need to make that known upfront. Not "I want to bone you," but "I want us to be more than friends" right up front.

See, I think women are much more open to who they sleep with, because they always have options. Even uggos can get boned if they really want to sling the poonanny around. So, as a result, they can afford to be reactive, to wait until a guy they want to bone comes around. They can afford to be friends with guys. 1) It's easy
2) It's quick
3) It takes up less space, and I have no idea how much Shockeye was kind enough to actually give me.

For you, perhaps, but not for your audience.  And it shouldn't even be easier for you, really.  What are you using to upload your pictures that makes it so hard to do multiple files?  With command line FTP you can do "put *".  With a GUI FTP client you can drag and drop a full directory in one shot.


JPG is a compressed format, so the benefit to zipping them up is pretty low.  And doing them all in one big chunk probably increases bandwidth costs overall, since it means that people have to download your entire archive of pictures to view one of them.

Back on the subject of displaying the fruits of your photographic labor on teh Intarweb, another way to make things easy on the reader is thumbnailing.  It might seem counterintuitive that putting extra data on your website will save on bandwidth, but it does because people no longer have to download each full-sized picture to see them all.  I actually wrote my own thumbnailer (http://www.leadtogold.com/software/webthumb/index2.html) a while back because I have family members on dialup who were finding it painful to click through all of my high-resolution photos.

Strazos is not going to do that.  He's on vacation in fucking Rome.  Run, Strazos!  Spread your wings and flyyyyyy!

No, he means that when he's uploading his pictures, he'd have to upload them one at a time if he didn't do the ZIP thing.

I'm fairly certain that this assertion is patently ridiculous, since it seems like the software in question is meant to allow you to mirror entire directories of files automatically.  It'd be pretty hard to do that if you had to upload each file individually.

(edit) From what I'm seeing, now that I poke around their site a bit more, it looks like you could set this thing up to run on your laptop (or whatever) and just automatically upload your pictures to your website as soon as they're retrieved from the camera.  Depending on how your camera interfaces with a PC, you might even be able to get it so that as soon as you plug the camera in, it automatically uploads right from the camera without any intermediate step.

But if it's "easier" to put everything in a ZIP file I guess that's cool too.   :wink:

I've never tried to drag between the two windows before, as they are usually behind each other when I am connected. Also, I've never had to do massive moves before; usually only 1 or 2 files at a time.

Have you ever used Win98 or older?  If so, and you ran games, I salute you as a statistical anomaly.

I suggest tweaking RAM settings in your BIOS, preferably on a VIA board.  That one worked wonders for me once.  Required a format/reload, even.

Software-wise, lots of things gave me a wonderful lockup.  Whenever a demon appeared in Darklands, for example.  On WinXP, try installing something useless like RadLinker on something besides C:, then try to upgrade or refresh.  Horrible.

Either that, or he doesn't know a crash when he sees one.

A "crash" is when the computer falls off the desk, right?

Keep in mind, my system is a bit less than 3 years old.

Also, I have had Programs crash, but my system/OS does not.

I try to keep things very neat and clean.

So your browser depends on having quotation marks around every string attribute in a tag?  I've never heard of any browser requiring that.  Not even Opera, which is psychopathic in its adherence to the HTML spec.  (Although now that I look at it, the HTML 4.0 spec does seem to require quotes if you have underscores in the string, so what do you know.)

Also, today I went through the Vatican museums, including the Cistine Chapel - All without instantly bursting into flames for my heathen ways. Unfortunately, I thought we were doing Just the Cistine Chapel, so I didn't bring my camara (I had no idea how things were set up there). I had to turn to buying a Kodak disposable. Hopefully, I can get the film developed with a picture CD within the next couple of days.

I just got back from two weeks in Italy.

Make sure you go to the Villa Borghese museum. You can walk to it from the Spagna metro stop. It requires telephone reservations a day or two in advance, but it's well worth the visit.

Also, try to find a restaurant called "Alfredo's (in the Pantheon area, I think)

Best fettucine alfredo I have ever tasted, and it's not even close. They apparently invented it. Most food in Rome is absolute crap, so this place was a huge boost to our trip.

Also, remember to drink your espressos or cappucinos standing at the bars as the locals do. It'll only cost about .8 euros each that way versus 2 to 4 euros at a table.

PS. Get to Venice if you can. Absolutely ridiculously cool. It's literally like travelling back in time 400 years.

I'll have the try this restaraunt, along with another someone suggested earlier within this thread. Just as you just said, Roman food is very....meh. Exception so far: Ristorante da Cesare, out sorta-kinda-but-not-really near the Vatican (Via Crescenzio 13 if anyone cares). The food was pretty darn good, especially my antipasta, which looked like poop on a cracker, but tasted great. I later found out it was a meat sauce made from chicken liver...good stuff.

And I'll be in Venice for a day/night right after I am done in Roma.

PS: I actually haven't been drinking a whole lot of coffee...mostly a metric fuckton of Gatorade/Powerade, with some water too...but it Has to be Naturale, not that fizzy shit; It makes me sick trying to drink it.

The best gelatto place I ate at was on the corner near the Trevi Fountain, and the most interesting pizza place was a small shop down the road from the Parthenon. If you haven't found either of these places I recommend them for food.

Turn off the flash for church pictures.  And use a camera that'll adjust its exposure time based on the light levels.  Then hold your hand really still.   :wink:

A huge percentage of the church pictures my brother and I got in two weeks were blur-tastic. My camera has anti-shake, and the long exposures were a killer without a tripod.

Best Gelato in Italy: Florence, just down the river from the Uffizi Gallery towards the sexy bridge there.  Get the lemon it's fantastic.

Venice is awesome, but so expensive.

Best meal:  At our host's house, she cooked for us.  Asparagus Alfredo and Tuscan Steak ftw.  96' Chianti is love.

Double Edit:  Florence > Rome.  Wish I had a car for Tuscany.

Those stories are really depressing. It's unfortunate that your experience of a trip through Italy is so impacted by issues with the group of students you are with.

Have fun in Venice. Here's a mission for you that could be fun:

Go to the Piazza Santa Margherita in Dorsoduro in the evening (Friday or Saturday night would be best). It's a hangout for most of the college / young people in Venice. There is a good sized English language school there. Try and start up a conversation and meet some Italian youth in that square:

Have fun in Venice. I guess that gives you just enough time to frolic with the pigeons at San Marco. If you go in St Mark's cathedral (which is amazing), There is a steep little "secret" stairway on the right that goes up to a second story. Absolutely go up there.
