Flying Dog Brewery Pays Tribute To 'Gonzo'
Gonzo Imperial Porter Named After Hunter S. Thompson (http://news4colorado.com/localnews/local_story_144123645.html)

May 24, 2005 10:19 am US/Mountain

DENVER (CBS4) Denver's Flying Dog Brewery will pay tribute to the late Hunter S. Thompson, CBS4 News reports.

The hard-drinking writer killed himself at his home near Aspen in February. He was a friend and neighbor of the founder of Flying Dog, and his influence has a lot to do with the way the brewery markets itself.

The brewery plans to honor Thompson this summer with a beer called Gonzo Imperial Porter.

The label will feature illustrations from Ralph Steadman, who illustrated many of Thompson's published works.

Proceeds from the sale will help pay for a stone memorial that is set to be built on Thompson's property. According to the Flying Dog Web site, the "150 foot stone column complete with a giant red fist at its summit will tower above Hunter’s Owl Farm Estate for all eternity."

What happened with the cannon?  Did Depp and Co. get to fire his ashes out of it?

Hmm and with the recent SCOTUS ruling can I order a few cases for delivery to Texas?  I used to smuggle beer into Oklahoma for weekend crashes in Norman but my hair is shorter now and Colorado is too far to drive even for HST pisswater.

Did someone say "Bonzo"?  Er... nevermind.

One thing I love about living in the Rockies is the availability of great Micro brews. I'll look forward to this one.

Porter is Guinness-type stouts.
(Well, technically, Guinness is based on London Porter stouts, but don't mention that to the Irish).

Stout is an ale as well.

The only difference betwen Lager and Ale is the yeast used. Lager ale is a bottom-fermenting yeast that must be grown at lower temperatures. Ale is a top-fermenting yeast that can happen at higher temperatures.

I didn't say it as if Amur'can beer was better. My favorites are not typical mainstream beers like Rolling Rock, Anchor Bay, or foreign stuff like Newcastle Brown Ale. But I consider them all beers, not really giving a crap if its a lager, an ale, or a beer.

It's all beer to me.

Lindeman's Lambic (peche)
Ayinger Ur-Weisse dunkel
Chimay tripel

Micro, once in awhile: Hair of the Dog Fred (an awesome barleywine-style ale brewed approximately 2 miles from my house in SE P-Town)

We have way too many microbreweries here in Oregon: Rogue, Bridgeport, Full Sail, Widmer, Portland Brewing Co., Saxer - all that shit is homebrew! Is it any wonder why I'm burned out?

Depp Arranges Shooting of Thompson's Ashes (http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/n/a/2005/05/27/entertainment/e045741D60.DTL)

(05-27) 07:34 PDT Aspen, Colo. (AP) --

Organizers of a memorial for Hunter S. Thompson plan to erect a 150-foot structure — courtesy of actor Johnny Depp — to shoot the gonzo journalist's ashes onto his ranch near here.

Friends and acquaintances gathered Thursday to discuss the Aug. 20 invitation-only service, which will be six months after Thompson shot himself in his Woody Creek home.

Jon Equis, the event producer working with Thompson's family, said the tower will be 12 feet wide at the base and 8 feet wide at the top, where a cannon will be placed.

Depp, who portrayed the author in the movie version of Thompson's book "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" will pay for the tower, designed to resemble Thompson's "gonzo fist" emblem.

As Thompson requested, his ashes will be shot out of the cannon onto his property.

Equis said the tower will be constructed far from Woody Creek Road and covered with a black drape before the service to discourage tourists. A public event is expected to be planned later to commemorate the writer's life.

The August event will consist of "spoken word and live entertainment," Equis said. The cannon will be fired around sunset.

The event organizers must get the plans reviewed by the Pitkin County Community Development Department, but Thompson's widow, Anita Thompson, was supportive. She said the event will be a celebration.

Ah, good.  I think everyone should be able to choose what they want done with their body when they die (within reason, freaks).

Well. A reason to run to the corner store and pick up a case of Flying Dog? Right on. Bolder Porter, Fat Tire and Breckenridge breweries are pretty good as well. And WayAbvPar, you can have all of the goddamn Coor's Lightpisswater you can take with you. Makes Golden smell like the stuff tastes.

Drinking to the Hubble even makes sense, in that it eventually makes your vision about as bad as its was.
