In a single hour of watching TV tonight, I saw ads for two ill-advised sequels:

Romy and Michelle: The Early Years

The Sandlot 2


Of course, both of these movies are sans original actors.

Why do studios seem to have such an aversion to original screenplays and IP? Neither movie really warranted a sequel at this point, and they're both quite pointless with "replacement" actors.

Greenlighting comes down to decisions of a few producers (or just one producer) with bad taste. That's all it is. There are thousands of scripts that get bought every year (and thousands upon thousands submitted), but 98% percent of them lie dormant for years. Even if there's a director who gets stoked about one, it still isn't up to him. It's literally a miracle that some good movies even get made.

There's definitely not a shortage of original material to work with. It's just that a lot of the people with the money aren't really educated enough to know what will work, and who they can trust --- so they just stick with the bullshit. It's safer.

This just confirms that the higher up in the business world you get, the more of an idiot you are.

If ANY movie deserves a sequel, it's Romy and Michelle. I HAVE TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!

Sounds more like a prequel - think Dumb and Dumberer. Or rather, don't.

Romy and Michelle deserve a double trilogy a la Star Wars.

I could now write titles for the 6 episodes, but I'm not feeling clever so you all can just substitute your own.

Hollywood started stupid, so it was a short trip. However, they have firmly IMMERSED themselves in teh stupid, just to be sure they are covered in it. Examples: pick any of the mediocre movie remakes of the last 10 years, or worse, the movie remakes of popular and old TV shows, a la Beverly Hillbillies, Brady Bunch. 1 out of every 20 or so of those happens to be a watchable movie, but when you are remaking fucking BEWITCHED, you've scraped the bottom of the barrel.

That said, I AM looking forward to Dukes of Hazzard, if only because it's being directed by the Broken Lizard guys, and has Seann William Scott as one of the Duke boys.

I saw the trailer for DoH...Jessica looks fantastic, but the rest of it looks reasonably dreadful. Might catch it when it hits cable.

Ever see that Far Side comic with the caption "The Writers of Bewitched"?

They're sitting around the table and one of them goes, "I've got it!  How about Endora puts some kind of crazy curse on Darrin that makes him act really weird and almost costs him his job?  No one can figure out what's going on until Samantha catches on and cures him!"

I only want one movie in this series:  Romy and Michelle's Lesbian Orgy.

Is that an "inbetweener", like Shadows of the Empire?
