Meet the newest addition to the family, my 12-week old Siberian Husky mix puppy, who we have affetionately named, Snow Beast. We picked her up Friday, and other than when she gets wound up, she's about the most gentle, loving puppy you could ask for.

See all those wires in the background? Expect that shit to be broken in a week. Have fun :)

Straight up, those dogs become beasts among men. Yours will .. ah, well, it's already a beast. Snow Beast.

Actually, that wiring is a long phone cord. It's not normally draped over the drawers like that. Ironically, we put it up there to stop her chewing on it. She's shown a propensity to chew cords, but a stern "NO" and some Bitter End stops it. I'm amazed at how well-behaved she is for a dog gotten from an animal shelter.

Remember, unless you need a pure breed or know a breeder or someone giving away dogs, always adopt from the animal shelter or local rescue league. Those people do good things.

She's a pretty puppy! Now you have the beginnings of a sled dog team- I am sure that will come in handy during those bitter Mississippi winters  :-P

Husky and husky mixes are very nice dogs. I loved our old siberian she had her quirks such as demanding to be put outside when it was - an assload below zero in green bay in the middle of the night but she was our best trained and by far smartest dog I have ever owned.

One thing you may want to get for her is a little pulling harness. Most siberians I have been around have an inborn love of pulling things. We would hook up a small 3 foot log to the harness and the dog would just run around the back yard pulling it. She also loved pulling us around on our cheep plastic sleds hell she would bring us up the hill faster than we went down it. I should note I was quite young when we had frosty like about 9 or 10 and she was about 175 pounds  of fun loving sled dog so I am not even sure she noticed my weight in the sled hehe.

Downside is if you don't channel their pulling taking a siberian for a walk can be exciting they are freaking STRONG and as I mentioned like to pull.

The harness idea is hysterical. Hook her up to an old computer and let her pull it around the yard. Post the video here!

I guess that would be one way to speed up a computer...  Most of the time they just sit there.

If you live in the country, even in some suburbs, that's another nice thing about a Husky.  They can handle themselves in a fight with another animal, so you don't have to worry too much about them.

We had an Irish setter and a husky-mix (forget the mix part) growing up, and our Irish setter would back down from stuff 1/100th her size.  Our husky?  Yeah, if you messed with her you were gonna be seriously messed up.  Coyotes (even in packs), jackrabbits (who are surprisingly vicious), badgers ... you name it, our Husky could kick its ass then turn around be all cuddly and happy to see you.  Damn she was a good dog.

We had a husky mix until I was 14. The dog was a month or so older than me. Heh.

Amazingly gentle dog too, and a hell of a guard since he looked JUST like a wolf.

BTW, nice job picking up a female. Buddy had a husky years ago, and he had a propensity to hump....a lot...after being fixed...

Say it with me: Lineage 2 revisited.

Huskies are very nice friendly dogs around people and most other dogs. They typically have the big dog confidence so they don't bounce around or start stuff but my old husky the few times she needed to laid the smack down with extreme force. One time a neighbors really untrained german shepard jumped its fence and this poor dog was just crazy it would lung at just about anybody. Well I was walking frosty and the shepard jumped out and started lunghing at us well frosty very quickly pulled out of my hand and took the shepard down and rolled it onto its back mouthing its throat. It did no harm to the shepard but that dog quickly got the message that screw with frosty or humans near her and die.

That shepard after that day was very submissive whenever frosty was around.

I would have put frosty against just about any other dog except our neighbors malmute. For those who don't know a malmute is the power dog in a dog sled team think husky but bigger MUCH bigger. Frosty was not a small dog she was almost 175 pounds of muscle but Tasha our neighbors malmute who looked just like frosty but was about 4 inchs taller at the shoulder and a lot more massive probaby was pushing 220.

Tasha was a sweaty though she had the ultimate big dog confidence kids could climb on her poke her for hours and she would just smile and lick them. Little dogs could yap and bark and nip at her and she would just grin and nuzzle and or lick them. I never ever saw any dog try to get agressive with tasha probably because any non rabid dog would take one look at her and realize what the outcome would be.

The whole big dog confidence thing is why most of our familys dogs have been large sled dogs such as samoyeds and huskies. They are super friendly around people and confident enough about themselves that they are not prone to dominance games or yipping. They do howl though and many varieties of husky sound almost exactally like wolves when howling which can get a bit errie at night.

The funny part is that Snow Beast doesn't bark. She has barked all of twice since we've got her, at one of those door stopper things. She might whine a little when she doesn't get what she wants, but she's otherwise very quiet and well-behaved. She does have that puppy exuberance when she gets wound up, though. Spent a few minutes last night just running around the house in circles because she couldn't nip at us. It was a quite funny psycho moment.

Lineage 2... you are a very mean man.

I like the thrid pic best, she just has this "I shall bite off your head now" look.  Too funny.

SPT, to keep her from biting or nipping at you, grab her tongue.  It sounds mean, but she'll eventually get the idea that body parts aren't for biting.  We did this with all our dogs (grew up with St. Bernards and have a Golden Retriever now) and no matter how wound up they would get, the second they got bare skin (particularly a hand/fingers) they would stop.  Oddly enough, if your hand is covered or wearing a glove, that's fair game, but bare skin is a no-no.

Nothing too harsh, just grab the tongue for a few seconds; the dog will immediately try to spit your fingers out.  They learn to associate biting = tongue grabbed = not a good thing to do.  A good no accompanying it doesn't hurt either.

/end dog advice.

Smartest dog we ever had was a malamute/sheppard cross. Kimo was actually fairly small for the mix at about 80lbs. Damn smart dog though. Only dog we had that figured out how to turn the door handles in the house. Malamutes can tend to have a bit of that wolf instinct in them though, can be rather solitary. She was a great dog, but you had to watch her. Also liked to dig like a fricken back hoe.

I was going to say she was also our most confident dog, but thats not true. That honor went to the little mutt I grew up with. Sam was a collie crossed with a few other small breeds. He was 30 lbs of sheer insanity. Went after the neighbours St. Bernard more than once.  During a big thunderstorm, he was on the back porch and we were all at the neighbours a block away watching the lightning show. Stupid dog jumped over the railing, cleared the back fence, landed in a bamboo bush (stabbing himself in the head - nasty gash) and still found us in the neighbours back yard.  Loved that dog.

Thankyou for this opportunity for me to be mushy about some of my childhood companions. I hope she brings you as much joy.

Back to my regularly scheduled vitriol.

My dad used to have two malamutes. Beautiful dogs with the power of a goddamn truck. I remember one time sitting in the backyard with the neighbours shooting the shit and they point past me and say "How long is the dogs chain?" Now, the chain keeps them in the front yard as it was tied to the porch. So, I'm kind of confused by them pointing and asking me this question. I turn to see one of the dogs wandering around the backyard as if nothing had happened. I walk around to the front to see the whole front porch leveled. Damn dog tried to chase a squirrel and it took the entire support for the deck with it. I also remember taking the male one for a walk and being dragged, literally, on my chest for a good half kilometer.

Also, can my hamster be part of F13? I know Schild has a secret love for Hamtaro Ham Ham Games.

Huskies are grat but most of them are not happy outside of a pack so you should at least keep two or more. They also need a lot of attention because they have so much energy to burn each day (They are sled dogs after all). I once knew a couple who kept a lone huskie but who didn't have the time to walk the dog properly and this dog was a royal pain in the ass because he didn't know where to let off all of his energy. He was running around like crazy.

But you have the same problem with hunting dogs like irish setters or german shepherds. God after looking at the picture my yearning for a dog has further increased but alas I do not have the time that a pet needs so no dogs or cats for me :(. Good luck to PopTart and Haemish however, oh and snow beast of course.

Oh yes I fully agree about the lots of energy stuff. Where we used to live had a huge backyard so the dogs could run around alot and it was also one reason for the harness thing. Giving the dog something to work with pulling wise helped use up a lot of their excess energy and they seemed to really enjoy it. Frosty when she was in the mood to pull often would go find her harness and bring it to me to hook her up.

We usually only had one dog at a time but all our neighbors around us had dogs to so they would get to play with eachother all the time which kept them happy. The most disturbing and funny thing is Frosty's favorite doggie friend was a 3 legged begal. The disturbing part was that the begals favorite thing in the world is when frosty would pick it up in her mouth and then basically throw it. The dog would pester and pester frosty till she would start chucking the begal around for a while.

My neighbor would see them playing and always cringe but the dogs seemed to enjoy the hell out of their game.

Cool, I love Huskies. My favorite breed is probably the Akita (http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/akita.htm), we had a great one in our band house in CA.

Tried to raise a wolf once, found it impossible to housebreak and had to give it away. That was a nice dog as well, surprisingly well-tempered, really took to us.

Most of the non-band dogs I've had have been strays (growing up in the country and all). Mutts, every one. And all friendly companions. Dogs are cool.

Hehe the first time my mom saw frosty and the begal playing she nearly fainted. She thought frosty was killing the poor lil thing. Only to see the lil begal yipping in pleasure running back up to frosty and bouncing around her till she did it again.

I tend to generally dislike dogs, but I've always had this fantasy of getting a dobie and training her to go for the jugular on a one-word command. I'd name her Princess and give a rhinestone-studded collar.

I would suggest that all further references to Snow Beast be specifically marked in large, red font.  This gives Snow Beast the sort of magnitude deserving of such a name.

I'm pretty sure Snow Beast was in an episode of Scooby Doo.

I love Akita Inus! One of the nicest breeds I've ever had, and to this day when I think of happiness I think of how Saki ( yeah yeah I know, not a very original name, sue me I was 10 ) looked when we took him to Vermont over christmas.
