Title: Pinched Nerves Post by: schild on April 21, 2005, 10:06:32 AM Typing at about the slowest speed I ever have. Considering my right arm is functioning like a zuchinni.
How the fuck does one deal with a pinched nerve. It's right under the top of my right shoulder blade and it actually feels as if a knife has been plunged into my arm and I didn't have the luck of going into shock or it severing the nerve. Yes, I slept on it wrong. And it's one of the worst pains I've ever dealt with. Leaning to my left hurts. Ugh. Title: Re: Pinched Nerves Post by: Strazos on April 21, 2005, 10:09:42 AM Muscle relaxers should work.
Failing that, liberal use of Bengay should help. Title: Re: Pinched Nerves Post by: Paelos on April 21, 2005, 10:10:10 AM The answer is a variety of things. Alternation of cold then hot packs on the affected area is a good start. Soft massage and multivitamin supplements help soothe connective tissue. Overall, i'd recommend those and a muscle relaxer and/or OTC painkiller for backaches, like Doan's.
Title: Re: Pinched Nerves Post by: WayAbvPar on April 21, 2005, 10:11:00 AM Vicodin and Skelaxin ftw. Take a couple, drink a glass of water, then prop yourself in front of your favorite TV show. All will be good in 45 minutes.
Title: Re: Pinched Nerves Post by: schild on April 21, 2005, 10:15:51 AM Considering I have work, I'll take this advice when I get home tonight. I think I can survive one day as long as I don't have to take any hairpin turns while driving.
And here I figured I'd have no luck with anything other than ramming my shoulder into the top of a fire hydrant. Repeatedly. Title: Re: Pinched Nerves Post by: Strazos on April 21, 2005, 10:22:17 AM Don't be silly. We are civilized here.
This isn't FARK. Title: Re: Pinched Nerves Post by: voodoolily on April 21, 2005, 10:32:35 AM Last month I had an infected tonsil that I was too busy to attend to. I had way too much work to go the doctor, and it was very painful. So I took two extra-strength tylenols and two extra strength advils and it totally helped. And I was still functional, not all doped up. Most office first-aid kits or coworkers will have these drugs if you don't. Don't be afraid of mixing OTC analgesics - this was what my dentist told me to use when I had my wisdom teeth removed.
Title: Re: Pinched Nerves Post by: kaid on April 21, 2005, 11:03:01 AM The things people recommended should help but if you are in that much pain it is not a bad idea to schedual a visit to the doctor. There are other problems that are far more serious that can have symptoms that are similar to pinched nerves.

I'm assuming it's a pinched nerve because I have to move my arm or neck in certain directions to make it hurt. Unfortunately those directions are useful for driving and whatnot. Title: Re: Pinched Nerves Post by: Toast on April 21, 2005, 11:22:03 AM Take some pain reliever (advil or vicodin) and have a beautiful woman massage your shoulder for a while.
Consider also that you may have injured some of the muscles in your back. I once had a micro-tear in the muscles in my back where they connect to the back of the ribcage. It was excruciating when i would turn certain directions or..breathe. Title: Re: Pinched Nerves Post by: voodoolily on April 21, 2005, 11:30:20 AM I'm gonna go with "slept on it wrong" as the likeliest prognosis. Cure: quit being a pussy.

I'm not being a pussy, I was just hoping for some sound advice. I'm actually about to drive 20 miles up the road BECAUSE I'M JUST HARDCORE LIKE THAT. ^_^ I think it's time to stop sleeping on a couchbed. Conan started it right.... Anyway, couple of points. I threw my back out about three weeks ago, went to the Doc and suprisingly he said that it probably had to do with the recent weather change and not drinking enough water as the fallout of it getting warmer. He told me to take x medication (some muscle relaxer) and Alleve. He said lack of hydration was the primary cause of muscle/joint issues. So I drank an ass load of water, like five liters a day and pissed like a crazy man, but it worked. My back was better in three days and I stopped the meds. Not had a twinge yet, but I am keeping up with the hydration. Title: Re: Pinched Nerves Post by: voodoolily on April 21, 2005, 01:21:20 PM OMG, Dual Wielding FTW. Conan started it right.... Title: Re: Pinched Nerves Post by: Furiously on April 21, 2005, 01:21:50 PM Might try taking a Midol. I have a friend that swore by them. I understand there is a muscle relaxant, a painkiller and something for water retention. All in all - a great hangover cure.
"MIDOL® helps you get rid of your symptoms so you can get on with your life. It's strong on menstrual cramps, plus it relieves bloating, fatigue and even breast tenderness." Title: Re: Pinched Nerves Post by: Margalis on April 21, 2005, 03:54:00 PM I cracked my knuckle once and had a pinched nerve in my hand, it got to the point where I couldn't move my fingers in a certain way at all and eventually had to have surgery.
Title: Re: Pinched Nerves Post by: voodoolily on April 21, 2005, 04:03:36 PM Did you crack it giving someone a knuckle sandwich? That'd be pretty cool. Injuries are always cool if you can say you got 'em in nefarious ways.

Injuries are always cool if you can say you got 'em in nefarious ways. Sadly no. I kept talling the doctor that and he wouldn't believe me, he asked me about 5 different times if I had gotten in from punching someone. His main concern was that I punched someone in the mouth and was cut on their teeth and had an infected cut. Title: Re: Pinched Nerves Post by: Llava on April 21, 2005, 10:15:36 PM Injuries are always cool if you can say you got 'em in nefarious ways. "My penis got cut off when I was beating my wife." Hm. Title: Re: Pinched Nerves Post by: Amp on April 21, 2005, 10:48:47 PM really hot shower....sit down with a cup of ice cold water (to drink) ...let the hot water just pound the hell out of the sore area for 20 mins at least .
A pinched nerve in the neck really has no easy fix, it just hurts and immobilizes you. And it just sucks for like 2 weeks. Seriously just take it easy for that long otherwise it will get better, you'll think it's better, then you'll turn quickly and be in pain another 2 weeks. feel free to continue talking about knives and the penis Title: Re: Pinched Nerves Post by: DarkDryad on April 22, 2005, 07:15:48 AM Soma beyotch! :-D
Title: Re: Pinched Nerves Post by: UD_Delt on April 22, 2005, 07:35:01 AM I have the same thing going on in my lower back right now except it's been this way for months. They tried steroids first which was decent short term relief but did nothing over the long term. Currently I'm taking a nice cocktail of muscle relaxers. I take about 4 a day of various combinations of Skelaxin, Mobic, and Zenthax (I think that's the right name). The Skelaxin and Mobic don't seem to make me too drowsy but the Zenthax really knocks me on my ass.

The Oscars suck. More people should buy DS's to support a startup like Nintendo. Title: Re: Pinched Nerves Post by: schild on April 22, 2005, 08:24:34 AM Paelos is bad at this. The rest of you, you're dying in a slow tar fire.

Title: Re: Pinched Nerves Post by: schild on April 22, 2005, 09:26:05 AM Aww...are they getting on your pinched nerves, schildy? How's the shoulder? Due to the intense pain when I woke up, I've discovered it's actually in the right side of my neck. The pain just seems to start at my shoulder. But how is it? Like tripping into a bucket of needles. Sharp ones, all of which happen to be sitting in the exact direction needed to kick my ass. Title: Re: Pinched Nerves Post by: voodoolily on April 22, 2005, 09:28:41 AM It sounds like you did something to your trapezius. Mine gets fucked all the time, usually from stupid shit like hauling 30-lb. bucket of cat litter 10 blocks (I walk a lot, okay?) or moving 3 cu. ft. of wet compost. The sports rubs and/or tiger balm work well.
Title: Re: Pinched Nerves Post by: schild on April 22, 2005, 09:29:49 AM Will domestic house cat balm work just as well? It seems the local pet store isn't carrying tigers anymore.

Or at places like Whole Foods or Wild Oats or whatevs. It's this great, burny-hot Chy-nee salve. Works good. It's also good for congestion, but don't put it on your nose (or ANY other mucous membranes, if ya catch my drift).
