Title: The $50,000 Rabbit Post by: Llava on March 07, 2005, 11:53:45 AM http://www.savetoby.com/
This is the official site. It is based in the same city as me, and there are folks trying to get it shut down for extortion and animal cruelty. Unfortunately for them and Toby, it's not illegal to kill a rabbit. They're food. If it was a dog, they would have a case. Here's some hysterical crying for Toby: http://www.rabbithaven.org/WhatsNew/savetobywarning.htm And here's a very similar site (http://www.krohm.net/bernd.htm) with a counter for added grim hilarity. Title: Re: The $50,000 Rabbit Post by: HaemishM on March 07, 2005, 11:55:47 AM Now that's some funny fucking shit.
Title: Re: The $50,000 Rabbit Post by: Llava on March 07, 2005, 11:58:02 AM Oh, I forgot to mention:
As the counter on the site shows, he's received $17,000 of donations. So far. I don't know if that includes profits from merchandise. Title: Re: The $50,000 Rabbit Post by: schild on March 07, 2005, 11:58:16 AM I wish I'd thought up this scheme first.
Title: Re: The $50,000 Rabbit Post by: Samwise on March 07, 2005, 11:59:37 AM Fucking brilliant.
From that warning site, though, it sounds like "Toby" might not exist? If that's true, couldn't they get this guy for fraud? Title: Re: The $50,000 Rabbit Post by: Llava on March 07, 2005, 12:01:27 PM <shrug>
He can get a rabbit and name it Toby. It won't take much of his $17k to do that. I'm not sure you can be held for fraud for not planning to do something that people are paying you not to do. Title: Re: The $50,000 Rabbit Post by: WayAbvPar on March 07, 2005, 12:19:14 PM I have a cat named Toby. Feel free to Paypal me some money to buy his fat ass (he is 19+ pounds and not yet 2 years old) some IAMs.

Title: Re: The $50,000 Rabbit Post by: Murgos on March 07, 2005, 12:29:42 PM He should put up another site opposed to his save toby site and it should talk about how the new site is going to file suit against the first site and seek an injunction to stop teh guy at the first site from eating toby and then collect donations for the "Toby legal defense fund."
Hell he could actually hire a lawyer and reach an agreement where if all the money from the second site is donated to the first site he will save toby if the total is over 50k... That would be elegant. Title: Re: The $50,000 Rabbit Post by: MaceVanHoffen on March 07, 2005, 12:37:35 PM (http://www.syberpunk.com/images/oolong/pancake3.jpg)
Give me $50,000 or I'm gonna eat the pancake. I'm serious. I'll fucking chomp that thing to death unless I get 50 large. Just an FYI :) Title: Re: The $50,000 Rabbit Post by: MrHat on March 07, 2005, 09:27:58 PM Jesus fucking Christ.
My old roommate had a bunny. Fucking thing must have weighed like 10 pounds. It chewed through 4 PS2 controllers and more power cords than I care to remember. I hated that fucking thing. It ate better than we did. I wish I had eaten it. Title: Kill the Wabbit, Kill the Wabbit, Kill the Wabbit... Post by: SirBruce on April 11, 2005, 09:55:52 PM Quote from: MSNBC Fur flies over rabbit death threat (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7406483/) Activists hopping mad about ‘Save Toby’ Web site By George Lewis Correspondent NBC News Updated: 8:09 p.m. ET April 11, 2005 Because bunnies are such adorable little critters, people are hopping mad about a Web site called savetoby.com (http://savetoby.com), filled with photos and even a video of a cute rabbit named Toby, accompanied by a threat on his life. "On June 30, 2005, Toby will die," proclaims an anonymous author on the site. "I am going to eat him. God as my witness, I will devour this little guy unless I receive $50,000 into my account." The site also contains several recipes for cooking Toby. One, for Lapin Braise, lists as the prime ingredient: "1 Toby cut in serving-sized pieces." Animal lovers, like Sue Brennan, who runs a shelter called "Rabbit Haven" in Gig Harbor, Washington, are outraged. "I think it's purely emotional blackmail and it was all designed to get a reaction," says Brennan. "The reaction he is looking for is money." She and other animal rights activists have been calling for it to be taken down. But GoDaddy.com, an Arizona company that hosts the site, refuses to pull the plug. Bob Parsons, GoDaddy founder and president says, "There's nothing illegal about the Web site. It's perfectly legal to eat a rabbit." Parsons says he's skeptical about the seriousness of the anonymous threat. "To be honest," he notes, "we don't know if he's actually going to eat the rabbit. We don't even know if there is a rabbit." Harebrained idea of two college students The brains behind savetoby.com are two college students on the east coast who agreed to talk to NBC News on the condition that their identities and location not be disclosed. "We've been getting tremendously varied responses," says one of the partners. "Many of which include death threats almost on a daily basis." Asked whether the Web site was a joke, he responded, "No, not at all. As a matter of fact, it's very serious. If we don't get $50,000, we are going to eat the rabbit." So, how do you save Toby from being put in a cooking pot on June 30? The Web site says you can either buy merchandise, such as T-shirts and coffee mugs, or you can simply donate money to the cause. But after animal lovers besieged PayPal, the online payment company shut down the "save Toby" donations link. Some animal rights advocates don't think that savetoby.com should be getting any publicity at all, fearing that it will inspire others to do the same thing, causing these schemes to multiply (like you know what) across the Internet, over and over. So far, the Web site claims it's collected more than $20,000. The other partner in the Save Toby venture also says they have landed a book deal with Kensington Publishing of New York. "It's going to include some recipes and a really nice picture layout," he says. "And it's also going to include an essay on animal rights activists and why we think they're nuts." As for those activists, they think that trying to make money off of threatening the life of a rabbit is a pretty harebrained scheme. Post by: SurfD on April 12, 2005, 08:59:32 AM Something like this falls into that hindsight category of "God Damn, why the hell didnt I think of that".
Man, if I could get people to give me $20,000+ dollars to NOT eat a rabbit, I would SOOO be all over that shit. Title: Re: Kill the Wabbit, Kill the Wabbit, Kill the Wabbit... Post by: schild on April 12, 2005, 09:03:34 AM Already covered. (http://forums.f13.net/index.php?topic=2439.0)
