Title: Imagine getting 802.11 access anywhere int he city... Post by: Akkori on April 08, 2005, 09:29:57 AM http://www.sanswire.com/
This company is in testign of a blimp that will hover 65k feet above a city, and provide the whole city with Wireless internet access. Data point in Barnes & Nobvles? BAH! :-) Anyone know anything about this company? Could this be the first step to unleashing gamers from theri home internet connection? Make LAN parties much more efficient? Spawn Beach gamers? hehehe... Title: Re: Imagine getting 802.11 access anywhere int he city... Post by: Krakrok on April 08, 2005, 12:03:15 PM The PSP might actually be useful then. Title: Re: Imagine getting 802.11 access anywhere int he city... Post by: Viin on April 08, 2005, 01:28:39 PM I'm no communications engineer, but the freq that 11b uses is line-of-sight. So, in theory, as long as you could see the blimp you could probably get a signal from it. However, being able to broadcast back up to the blimp would take more power than current wifi cards, and would preferrably be directional instead of the current omni-directional setup. I suppose if the antenna pointed straight up it wouldn't be that big of a deal.
Another however, people like Ricochet (http://www.ricochet.net/) do something similiar, but just with towers. They have a custom modem that puts out higher wattage signals. Title: Re: Imagine getting 802.11 access anywhere int he city... Post by: MaceVanHoffen on April 08, 2005, 01:58:33 PM When did wifi get a 65k+ foot range? WiFi's range has always been extendable, even with cheap hardware. (http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/05/25/229245&tid=193&tid=215&tid=137) The protocols themselves are not any more inherently limited in range than other radio transmissions. The range limitations were to be found on consumer WiFi hardware, such as modems. Title: Re: Imagine getting 802.11 access anywhere int he city... Post by: Akkori on April 09, 2005, 07:40:38 AM If this works like they expect, satellite ISP's may get trashed, as well as it opening the doors to a LOT of modem user who cannot get cable or DSL. I am curious to see how weather will affect this.

Title: Re: Imagine getting 802.11 access anywhere int he city... Post by: Akkori on April 11, 2005, 10:34:06 AM hehehe. Good thing there isnt weather at 65k feet! I was thinking how stuff like lightning would affect the signal. I would be very VERY tempted to cancel my cable access if I could get roughly the same speed, and add to that the ability to hook up anywhere in the city.
