Title: Saga of Ryzom to Merge English-Speaking Servers
Post by: HaemishM on April 04, 2005, 08:58:16 AM
Two cultures separated by an equal distaste for a mediocre MMOG (http://www.f13.net/index2.php?subaction=showfull&id=1112630207&archive=&start_from=&ucat=13&).

Just for those keeping score.

Ryzom?

It's that french game with the open sourced something a rather and all the animeesque looking shit. The particle effects in the game were really well placed. Some of the vegetation was nice also.

The game was mediocre crap. Shame really, with a little bit of work it could have been one of the more standout independent MMORPGs.

Nevrax follows Artifact Entertainment and provides info on financial reorg (http://ryzom.com/?page=letter_davidcohen_20050415).  Tough year in MMO's.  At least David Cohen Corval sounds much better than David Bowman did.

Quote
I (David Cohen Corval) officially announced the beginning of our reorganisation a while ago explaining that it would involve external and internal changes. Now that the external changes have been made, the internal ones have begun.

Some of you already have observed that Nevrax has filed for a legal procedure under the French courts comparable to the Chapter 11 in the US. This is part of our plan.

It does seem that the road to success for an independent MMPORPG is to bilk some investors for development money, declare bankruptcy, and then have the developers buy the game for next to nothing.

It doesn't look like the game, Mourning, is even going to get that far.  I think it might have to pack up shop and call it a day with the couple of K it got from the pre-orders.  The beta test, which just a couple of weeks ago, would show 60-odd players online, now peask at 15.  Strangely, they just announced that they would be launching next week and the monthly sub will be $8.95.  They've upset the last few stragglers by introducing a new retail price of $19.95 when the pre-order cost was $29.95 at a supposed 40% discount.  Someone here called it a trainwreck.  The train has completely derailed and there are very few survivors.  I've been in the game and it's barely in what you would consider an in-house alpha, let alone ready for release.  I've never seen anything like it.  This company didn't even get to properly bilk enough $$ to buy themselves a decent meal.  Last week the head dev, Tiamat, announced that he was feeling ill and turning off his PMs.  He's not been seen since.  Very discouraging for those still left.

I'm a bit sorry for Ryzom, however.  There are quite a few clever ideas which, unfortunately, do not add up to a fun time.  I really consider their stanza system to have a lot of merit.  And it's kind of purdy, too.

Edit:  This might be the first time in the history of f13 that 3 women in a row posted!  Yay!

Can't have that, then!  Four in a row or more and you all might start thinkin', thinkin' things like you have a right to vote and whatnot!

Does this mean your periods are in sync now?

I think this means that French games featuring nouveau fashions tend to attract lots of female interest  :-P

Oh yea, that is the reason.  ;)

Given that Jessica is now going to be involved, I might actually try it out once it is "re-released".
