I have finally decided to upgrade to a new mouse. I have been using the same IBM Lazer mouse for like 2 years, and I think I need a few new buttons.

I have been considering this one. (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=26-104-150&depa=0) My friend has it, and REALLY likes it. There is also a new version of this mouse comming out, that has twice the DPI rate. here, (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=26-104-178&depa=0) but it seem that its not comming out for two more months.

Also, does the mouse pad make that much difference? In that other thread people where drooling over schilds xpad or what ever its called.


So, what do you guys think? A mouse is a mouse? or a good mouse can really make a difference?

Supposedly there are mice that are more accurate because their refresh rates are higher or something, but I've never found a basic optical mouse to be anything less than accurate when it comes to getting headshots in CS or whatever.  I never blame a miss on the fact that I have a $20 mouse, because I never notice any kind of lag between what my hand does and what the screen does.  So I don't place much stock in the uber gaming mice.

It's been well documented that only homosexuals use mice that have extraneous buttons. 

On the other hand, my other computer has a Logitech trackball, because they are the 133t.

Happily using a Logitech MX510 (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=3,CONTENTID=8070) optical mouse. I only ever use the thumb buttons by accident (suddenly find myself going back/forward in web pages and think "hey, that's cool, I can do that with my mouse" then forget about it again). My old mouse was a cordless Logitech without a scroll wheel, so getting used to that is enough.

Was warned off the MX1000 (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2135,CONTENTID=9043) laser mouse. Apparently it has a pause after you lift it, which is bad because many gamers lift their mouse to recenter it.

mx 510 here as well, except i extensively use the mouse buttons.

In wow, my mouse was.. thumb in the natural spot was autorun. The button above that, just slightly out of reach, was wolf form. The button south of the wheel is teamspeak. The button north of the wheel was mount. I don't like clicking in the mousewheel, so i never did that.

$20 optical trackball.  I have the reflexes of a fifty year old man, and need nothing better.

Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer.  A few years old now, but its got 5 buttons, is optical, and has a wheel.  Plenty good.

My problem with extra buttons is that I always click them accidentally.  And they invariably do something stupid like pop up a Windows menu when I'm in the middle of a game.

Logitech Wheel Mouse Optical.

Had an MS Intellimouse, which came with my MS keyboard.  Mouse lasted about 18-24 months, then the left button started acting up.  Went back to logitech, as I've never worn out one of their mice.  (The logitech I had before the MS mouse was non-optical.  Once you've gone optical, you can't go back)

On mine the extra 2 are thumb buttons.  I tend to make them jump or duck buttons.  Works well.

You don't need more than 2 buttons + wheel. You don't need to consider any other brands. You do need it to be optical.

A mouse is just a mouse, so long it's optical, has a wheel, and is mde by MS or Logitech.


EDIT: Oh yeah, and no wireless shit either. It'll get lost. And run out of power. And occaisionally out of signal range.

I guess this probably depends on what you want to do with it?

For generic gui input and, um, 'regular' gaming the standard Microsoft Intellimouse 3 button one has never let me down. If you are the type for more compeditive gaming, you will probably want something from http://www.razerzone.com/ for the mouse (as Shockeye has said): although there are other options, and one of these http://www.icemat.com/ for the mousepad.

Alternatively, if you prefer to not be called a sailor by Gulp, a $2 cloth pad will do just fine =)

Real men go out to their yards and dig up the biggest rock they can find for their mouse pads.  Overall flatness of the rock is a bonus, but is not considered essential.

It makes my (very limp) wrist and forearm very happy.

MS Intellimouse Explorer.  The extra two buttons work for me because I have thin fingers - none of the accidental button clicks chubby fingured guys get. Also, I've used the standard MS Optical as well, personally I just find that the intellimouse feels smoother.

Mousepad - generic blue dell pad. Works just fine.

I still use logitech high-precision ball mouse that I purchased over 5 years ago. Its still good enough for me and I play bunch of FPS. Good mouse mat and clean mouse = same as optical precision.

I'm pretty sure using anything at all for a mouse pad would fail the Gulp test.

The table holding my mouse off the floor is a more than adequate surface.

I have a regular logitech optical, the silver/blue one, its been a long while (since the demo of T:V) since I played fps so I haven't evaluated my mouse setup in some time.

I do need to at least pickup two more of those plastic disks and I think I'll get a new pad...

I use a MS optical mouse both at work and at home. The thing only costs like 20 bucks is very accurate and has a nice fast and free moving wheel for fast scrolling. The logitech ones are about the same thing you don't need to spend tons of money to get a good quality accurate optical mouse anymore.

Also one should note that most "two button" mice these days actually have three. Most MS and logitech mice you can click the mouse wheel for a third button.

Logitech optical wheelmouse, only 3 buttons. I like optical because it almost doesn't matter how clean or dirty the surface is. Since my apartment apparently produces dust like flowers produce fucking oxygen, this is important.

I've used the RazerMouse at work, but one day it just stopped working. I didn't really see much difference.

The MX900 is good, but uses ís juice rather fast... maybe I just need two new rechargeable batteries.
The MX1000 is fantastic. Responsive, works on every surface, goes for weeks between recharges and has the word LAZER written on it. Lots of buttons and sidescrolling for Photoshop, doesn't work in all programs though.
Unfortunately lately I have had some connection issues and it's been sluggish as hell. Don't know if its the mouse or the environment (everybody has different cordless mice).

I know it sounds stupid to buy a $100 mousepad, but believe me - it makes a difference. However, it's as i said before, if you are just gaming there is no need to cough up the money for these things. But if you are looking to seriously serve people...  :-D

Personally, I prefer my mice wireless (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=26-105-157&depa=0). It has the two normal buttons, middle click, middle-left, middle-right and two thumb buttons. I haven't ever wanted more than that and no pesky cord! (actually, I've never once used the side-to-side buttons for the scroll wheel).

Yeah, that Logitech gaming mouse I linked has the same refresh rate/dpi as the razor diamondback, but from what I hear, the side buttons are WAY better placed on the Logitech.



Thats what I have at work. Once you get used to having one button, and hotkeys, for desktop stuff, its fine. For gaming, I wouldnt even try.

When it comes to desktop stuff, I use the right mouse button as much as, if not more than, I use the left mouse button.   :|  I just don't get the one-button thing.

On an apple you can hold and then release to have the same effect as right click - don't know if a one button mouse on Windows will do the same.

It's still crazy though.

Same here.  I don't even know what brand my mouse at home is; I've never bothered to look--I stole it from a bunch of spare shit we had laying around here at work when my last generic mouse died.  It's got a couple buttons and a wheel, and it makes the cursor move around the screen.  Don't need any more than that, meself.

Logitech Cordless MX Duo, so whichever came with that, MX700, I think.
Neither do a lot of Apple fans. First thing we do when we get a new mac is put a two-button mouse on it. Apple is retarded about mice. From the completely moronic and almost unusable hockey puck to the chintzy 'no button' opticals they've been putting out the past few years, which are very susceptible to cord damage and cost $80 to replace...We all hate Apple's mice. Some of the newer eMac keyboards are pretty nice, though.

I'm a rt-clicking madman, I don't even use the left button for dragging stuff in winders anymore, having the contexual menu is so much more helpful (because windows picks odd defaults).

Just using some standard Kensington POS 2-button scroll-wheel optical jobbie. It's "for macs", though, so it's got fancy plastic and rubber. Nice rubber "gills" along the side for grippiness....except they also collect dead skin and dust like mad, nice little fins full of gunk!

Razor BoomSlang 2000 (managed to find the one copy of it that won't explode in your hand, kick you in the nuts and make you buy a new one apparantly) and a Logitech MX500 for thoose times when I am too lazy to clean out the gunk from the Razor.
