Title: Dream Theater "Live at Budokan" DVD
Post by: Miguel on March 30, 2005, 03:16:19 PM
I picked this up last weekend during a sale at Tower Records. (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0002WYS6S/qid=1112224262/sr=8-3/ref=pd_csp_3/104-1361654-8092701?v=glance&s=dvd&n=507846)

Let me start off by saying that I have been a huge Dream Theater fan for the last 10 years or so.

However amazing their stuff on CD was, I always had it in the back of my mind that a lot of what I was hearing was the result of 50,000 takes and technical tomfoolery in the studio...

...but to see them play this shit LIVE was like a religious experience.

I don't think I've seen a group of more technically proficient musicians playing together EVER.  I know a lot people aren't into progressive rock but come on:  some props are due here!

My favorite track is probably "Instrumedly":  I mean come on:  four people playing 5 minute long 32nd note runs perfectly together at insane speeds?!?  It's fucking impossible, right?

Run out and buy this DVD, and prepare to be stupified.

From what I've heard of them, they're pretty good until the singing starts.  Most of the vocals I find annoying.  Albeit I've only really heard stuff from Awake.

LeBrie isn't my favorite. Sometimes their lyrics get pretty bad too. (About half the stuff on Images and Words, all of Scenes from a Memory, etc) Scenes from a Memory kills me because I really like the music in it but the lyrics and "plot" are just so retarded it hurts.

Instrumedly in my opinion is just a 20 minute musicians' wankfest. One of the two gripes I have with this DVD.

The second one is that James' Performance is lousy compared to what the other band members achieve on stage. This is not so bad however because most of the time he just doesn't have anything to do at all.

"Instrumedley" and "Stream of conciousness" alone are more than 30 minutes worth of instrumentals. All in all La Brie probably only has about half an hour stage time out of the three hours. If I were their vocalist I probably would have died from boredom right on stage. The DVD is one of the best Lve DVDs I have seen, but the showing-off gets annoying at times, I want to hear more songs and less intrumentals thank you very much.
