Title: Sony told to halt PS1 and PS2 production
Post by: Riggswolfe on March 28, 2005, 12:20:59 PM
Here (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7315614/)

I am sure Sony will win the appeal, on the other hand, I can see the President of Nintendo on his knees in his bedroom praying very hard.

As I understand it Nintendo uses its own technology from the N64 rumble pack days, so should be in the clear. And Billy Goat's little wonder is safe since his Microsloth company both licenses the technology - and owns stock in the company.

All this from a reputable source (http://www.slashdot.org/).

Well, what I meant by the Nintendo president praying was that something like this may be their only chance against Sony.

$90,000,000 isn't going to do shit to Sony. Nintendo has no prayers and if they think they do, they'll go unanswered. Filthy swine. Wario Ware was touched indeed.

I was thinking more of halting sales of the PS1 and PS2 but then again, they're entrenched now. Yeah, Nintendo has maybe one more console in them. Though from what I hear the PSP isn't selling well in the US so they may have a foothold in the console wars for now.

The hardcore got their units at launch. Just wait for Grand Theft Auto or any of the other mass jackass titles that will be ported.

Then we'll see how the fucker sells.

I think the reason the PSP isn't doing so well (at the moment) is that Sony didn't invest enough in advertising.  It just seems like there was very little print and media about it compared to, say, the iPod at launch.  Or (for schild) maybe it doesn't need it since it will sell itself!

A friend of mine has a PSP now, and I got a chance to try the thing out.  It was very awkward ... I had to explain to my wife that I was not watching porn, that my crotch lump was merely because of Ridge Racer.  That is one damn fine portable ... but we'll see how things go in a few months.  I'm one of those people who bought a Sega Saturn at launch, so call me jaded.

Sony won a stay in the decision, so it can continue to sell PS2s and the like. Wait for the appeal.

I don't watch much tv, but I've only seen a single commercial for the PSP, and it was pretty bad. If I didn't know beforehand what it was adverting, it would have been even moreso, since apparently it was supposed to be the view if you were /inside/ the PSP looking out. Bad.

Don't overestimate the handheld gaming market.

Haven't we been accomodating enough, washing all his soiled sheets?

I saw 1 ad for the PSP on TV, it was....odd. The commercial didn't even really say what the thing was...though I guess in the age of Google, that may not be neccessary.

I'm still not buying one.

While I'm firmly in the 'sure it sounds good, but people just aren't that into handheld' camp. There are two points to note here...

1) The device is new enough and has enough geek techy appeal that they can sell more than they can build for now, and it's not even christmas. Why spend on advertising immeadiately?

2) As mentioned previously and in other threads Sony's marketing (both in advertising terms and in brand & product strategy terms) over the last few years has sucked big time. It's the biggest reason that the Sony corporation is suffering heavy weather at the moment. That said, the new CEO and various other noises being made at the company suggest they know the trouble they have and they seem to be trying to do something about it.

I don't see them turning it around in time to be able to make the PSP a breakthrough device on an ipod scale (I still think that for that they'd need to have built a product that looks and feels more friendly to the non-gamer), but I won't be surpirsed if it dominates the handheld gaming space once the price drops and assuming Sony do get their shit together.

You might want to recheck on that one.  Hell, I was wandering around Green Bay earlier yesterday, and the local WalMarts and Circuit City all had several (5+, 10+ at WalMart) in stock.  Reports are that this is common nearly everywhere, except extremely large places like NYC.  I would guess that they might have sold 50% of the PSP's they shipped over here, if that.
