Title: Uwe Boll is about to get his ass shown to him...
Post by: schild on March 28, 2005, 04:03:25 AM
...a Frenchman?

Yes. I have faith again in the video game movie. Christophe Gans is the guy who did Le Pacte Des Loups (The Brotherhood of the World) which, while it wasn't the most terribly intelligent movie was a joy to watch and one of the most beautiful movies I've seen on the big screen in the last five or ten years. Apparently he's been "tapped" or rather, bought the rights to make Silent Hill.

Quote
The movie is based on Konami's popular Horror Survival game "Silent Hill". The story is written by Roger Avary ("Killing Zoe"), and will be directed by Christophe Gans ("Brotherhood of the Wolf").

A woman desperate to save her dying child finds herself trapped in an alternate reality as she searches for her daughter in a dangerous world of demons.

Rose cannot accept the knowledge that her daughter Sharon is dying of a fatal disease. Over the protests of her husband, she flees with her child, intending to take the girl to a faith healer. On the way, she ends up driving through a portal in reality, which takes her to the eerie and deserted town of Silent Hill.

Sharon disappears in Silent Hill, and Rose follows what she thinks is her daughter’s silhouette all over town. It’s soon clear the town is not like any place she’s ever been. It’s inhabited by a variety of creatures and a living darkness that descends and literally transforms everything it touches. The human inhabitants—the ones who are left—are trapped and fighting a losing battle against the Darkness.

Joined by a cop named Cybil, who has been sent to bring her and Sharon back, Rose searches for her little girl while learning the history of Silent Hill and that Sharon is just a pawn in a larger game.

To save her daughter, Sharon makes a deal with a demon in the form of a little girl.....

Short of turning the lead character from Harry into Sharon and some...more cinematic changes...I can only assume that this is based on the original game for the Playstation. Silent Hill 2 probably would have been the better choice for a movie, or even more so, Silent Hill 4 (which would make a fucking killer arthouse flick). But given Gans' penchant for monster combat, Silent Hill (1) is probably the best option.

I'm not entirely sure why I felt the need to even comment on this. In the very least it didn't deserve a full thread.

I happen to hate Uwe Boll Just That Much.

Edit: Here's a video (http://www.konami.co.jp/ja/tv/news/0572/br.html) of the people who got the rights giving themselves a pat on the back. Also, I hope that clip they show isn't uh, the movie. It's been a while since I've played the original Silent Hill, but here's to hoping the new one ISN'T cgi.

Edit: The writer's (of Silent Hill) email address is on his web page. Maybe I should ask for an interview on his views on video game movies, Uwe Boll and uh, his favorite movie from the past year. Or someshit.

Just wondering....Did you watch the subtitled version or the dub?

Hmm...They forgot to mention True Romance, Resovoir Dogs, Natural Born Killers, and Pulp Fiction.

That's because he's uncredited for that egotistical prick shithead's movies. I hate Uwe Boll almost as much as I hate Quintin Tarantino.

Uwe destroys an art form. Quintin on the other hand pisses on everyone elses are, mixes a little bit of his own blood in (or a virgin sacrifice - however he's feeling on that week) and then calls it his own.

Avary's best work was Rules of Attraction. Though Killing Zoe is arguably the critic's favorite of his personal pieces.

Minor correction in Schild's orignal post for the rare folks that haven't heard of the movie. For those that haven't but plan to, do yourself a favor and just watch the damn subtitles.  The movie is silly but a visual masterpiece. I have the poster at home waiting to be drymounted.

Gans should do a good job with material like Silent Hill.

Oh, OK. That guy. Yeah, Brotherhood of the Wolf was silly, but goddamn beautiful. And had the bonus of Monica Bellucci, who can only improve anything she is in, especially when she bares it all. Or any of it.

He'll do a good Silent Hill. He should also drive to Germany and beat Uwe Boll with his cock.

I'll have to wait and see about this - I loved Silent Hill and went out and bought the first series of "officially licensed" comics that came out bearing the Silent Hill logo.

My recommendation? Don't buy the comics.

It will be interesting to see how the movie handles the multiple endings aspect of Silent Hill. Or how badly it will ruin the game by association.

Does this occur in Brotherhood?

There was a dubbed version of Brotherhood? lol.

When I watched it at the cinema, it was like the 5th week out there and a weekday, so my bud and me got the theater just in time for it to start.  The motherfucker was packed to the front.  That film was HARD to watch when you're sitting the front row.  Subtitles and crazy fighting make MrHat a something something.

Yes, unfortunately Emelie Desquenne (spelling?) does not. She gives good face though.

I don't ask for much from my modern actresses. Just the proper amount of T&A if it's an action movie. Though Brotherhood was a period piece, so I'll take what I can get.

If I recall, not really. Lots of hookery lingerie, but nothing within a mile of the other stuff she was in. As far as I know, the pinnacle of her nudity was The Apartment, though I think there's some other movie where she does some 14 year old boy that might be better. Haven't seen it though.

Monica Bellucci was working for the Vatican in a whorehouse in Brotherhood. One scene she's lying naked on a bed. As the camera zooms in on her tits, they turn into snow-covered mountaintops. It's one of the most brilliant transitions ever laid on film.

Also, there's 2 other scenes where she shows T&A. It's all pretty artsy fartsy so people tend to forget it after the movie is over. Seriously though, it's one of the most incredible looking movies I"ve ever seen, the t&a really wasn't all that necessary. But I don't know if they could have done without it, they are, after all, French. What do they have if they don't have beautiful women? Nothing but a history of silly drama. It's only in the last 10-15 years that French film has really gotten better. Sure, there were periods of decent shit, but really - for the country that practically invented film (the Lumiere Brothers if you're shaking your head in denial), their history of film sucks assssssssssssssssssssssssssss.

Yeah, I agree. But at one point there, I think they had THE best period of film as well. They had to come down some time.

I was going to disagree with you here Schild, but then I reread what you wrote and you do mention that French film has improved in the last 10-15 years.  Now since my favourite French film: http://imdb.com/title/tt0101700/ is actually 13 years old, I forgive you.

I was writing up this whole post about Jeunet and Caro being directly responsible for the rise of French film in that time frame. Then I nixed it thinking everyone would already know that.

Looks like I was right.

I liked the City of Lost Children more.

Hmm - I would have thought it was due to breakout actor Gérard Depardieu. And I say that only half jokingly.

I hope you don't put Jean Cocteau in the list of shitty French directors. Some of his best work beats the pants off much of the drek, including the artsy-fartsy drek, that gets put out today. Beauty and the Beast and Orpheus easily trump most of the rest of French film combined.

Watch Jean De Florette and Manon of the Spring (which would be exceptions for their time, I suppose).

I don't care what anyone says, Depardieu is awesome.

Yes. And wholly misused by American film companies. Green Card indeed.
