Agency finds 10-year-old taking alcohol orders at local Mexican restaurant (http://www.nwanews.com/story.php?paper=nwat&section=News&storyid=26503)

BY DREW TERRY Northwest Arkansas Times

Posted on Saturday, March 26, 2005

Fourteen restaurants received citations in the past two weeks during compliance checks conducted in Fayetteville by the Arkansas Alcohol Beverage Control agency.

Among the violations recorded during the checks March 16 and Wednesday was one to Elenita’s Mexican Café, 701 S. School Ave., for allegedly having a 10-yearold child taking orders for adult beverages. "That was the youngest hostess or waitress I’ve ever seen," ABC agent Mike Jones said Friday. "They had a 10-year-old taking orders for the alcohol, but she didn’t serve it. She placed the order with another employee, who later delivered it to the underage (patron)."

With parental consent, a 19-year-old may serve alcohol, he said.

Agents perform compliance checks periodically to reduce the sale of alcohol to minors and to ensure outlets are checking for appropriate identification.

Elenita’s was visited March 16 because of a prior violation three weeks earlier when the Fayetteville Police Department discovered nearly 20 minors in possession of alcohol at the restaurant, Jones said. "I cited the owner proba- bly two weeks prior for selling to a minor, so we just went back to check because of the previous complaint," Jones said. "You would think that a place would try to straighten up after a violation, but that wasn’t the case in this instance."

The ABC offered to settle the prior violation with a $750 fine and five-day suspension, Jones said, but a penalty should be steeper in light of the recent incident.

Attempts to call Elenita’s managers Friday were unsuccessful because the restaurant’s telephone number is disconnected.

Agents perform compliance checks every month throughout the state. They last took place in Washington County in January, when Jones found no violations while focusing on liquor stores. "That’s real good," he said. "My hat’s off to the businesses that do a good job in checking the identifications."

In the most recent checks, Jones worked with the Arkansas State Police and a 17-year-old volunteer.

A trooper would enter the establishment and observe the minor order alcohol. If he was served, the trooper would notify Jones, who then would enter the business and issue and misdemeanor criminal offense to the employee for unknowingly selling to a minor. He then would inform the manager of the violation.

Twelve businesses were checked March 16. The other six that received a violation were El Chico’s, Hooters, Mexico Viejo, Powerhouse Seafood & Grill, Shogun Japanese Steakhouse and U.S. Pizza, Jones said.

Of the 15 establishments examined Wednesday, another seven were cited: Flying Burrito on North College Avenue, Smokey Bones BBQ, On the Mark, Casa Torres, Big Daddy’s, La Huerta on Crossover Road and Las Palmas on South School Avenue, Jones said.

Those businesses could face $200-500 in fines and some kind of probation, Jones said.

What a stupid law.  The waitress not being able to take orders for alcohol, that is.

Actually, I thought it was upside-down, but I suppose it works if you are looking at it from above instead of from the side.

Jesus- where do you live? Deep Appalachia? I would fear for my intestinal tract eating at anyplace with the word Squat in its title.

I think I can get a Squat and Gobble for about $40 out by the airport.

My favorite pharmacy is one that cuts no bullshit with it's customers.

You too can get your prescriptions filled at this fine establishment in Bladensburg, MD.

A) I don't own a camera
B) I'm not sure it's still in business, but it was around for a very long time, from pre-me to at least 10 years ago, when I was last down that way.

I also found a Squat & Gobble in London (http://www.itchylondon.co.uk/venues/1205.html) and Arkansas (http://www.womenanglers.us/abby_squat_gobble.html).

The chain in SF has a website (http://www.squatandgobble.com/).

Anything called "Squat & Gobble" in SF gives me nightmares.

No, the one I'm talking about was a real restaurant, not some trendy cafe.

The original S&G should sue the chain. Unless the chain has been around over 35 years.

I've eaten at the Squat and Gobble on Haight.  Multiple times, even.  As creperies go it doesn't suck.

They still have a Sambo's somewhere in Oregon, I think. But that's more offensive than hilarious, I guess.

Here's some funny ASCII art stolen from the Achewood Cookbook:

8`0-----------------<=3

It's something being shot from a penis into the mouth of a bespectacled person.

There's a Sambo's in Santa Barbara too (at least there was when I was there last, which was close to 6 years ago).

This thread took a completely different route than I expected. The ASCII money shot is funny though.

Ahhhh, Sambo's. I used to love me some Sambo's as a kid, because it was one of the few places you could go for dinner that would serve a great stack of pancakes and sausage/bacon at 7 pm. It was like the original Denny's, only with racially-overtoned name.

Squat & Gobble just doesn't sound like a trendy San Fran fag magnet. It sounds like it belongs in the wilds of the Okies, someplace you go and get cowboy food.

As a kid, I didn't have any of those fancy restaurants in my home town.  You know where we went when we got dressed up and decided to go out to have a nice dinner?  The restaurant at the Holiday Inn.  Seriously, that was as upscale as it got without driving to the city.

Otherwise, you could choose from either A&W or Burger Chef.  That was it.  Eventually McDonald's came in, and a Pizza Hut, and then we got other restaurants like Ponderosa and Golden Corral and so on.

Oddly enough the Sambo's was a concatenation of the two founders nicknames.  Sam and Bo.  Too bad they chose the kid for an 19th century childrens  book to tie into thier marketing.  Even though he (Sambo) eats lots of pancakes in the book and there is nothing dergatory in the story at all except that it has the word 'black' (the book not the restaurant) in the title which is almost universally used to designate someone of African decent with dark brown skin and the kid is African with dark brown skin.

Gotta love PC and people who have no idea what the hell they are talking about other than "Well, I think it might be insulting to someone somewhere but I don't really know for sure."

Burger Chef, that was my favorite hamburger joint as a kid. Used to love getting those little fucking 45'records made out of wax and cardboard in their version of the Happy Meals, with the vampire character whose name I forget. Burgula? Something like that. Totally whack job branding.

I too remember getting dressed up to go eat at the Holiday Inn on Sundays. And hospital cafeterias, but that was because of my grandmother, who either had way too many sick friends and relatives, or was just crazy enough to like hospital cafeteria food.

Fangburger!  Some guy has some MP3's you can download:

http://tvindy.typepad.com/tvindy/2005/03/more_fun_with_b.html
http://tvindy.typepad.com/tvindy/2004/09/burger_chef_jef.html

And as he points out, Burger Chef had their "Fun Meal" first; McD's copied the idea for their "Happy Meal".

I too remember getting dressed up to go eat at the Holiday Inn on Sundays.

We didn't go every Sunday but we did pretty often.  I wonder, was there some big marketing push that got families to do that?

I used to go to the lunch counter at Newberry's with my mom and grandma. Nothing like food from a five & dime! But dang their hot dogs were hell of tasty.

Sambo's were great.  As a child, you got to eat pancakes and look at all of the murals with the tiger and the young African on the walls.  Good stuff.

In my youth, one of the popular restaurants was at the Howard Johnson.  Everyone ate at the HOJO.  That was a big night out.
