Title: Suez Canal blockage
Post by: Jeff Kelly on March 25, 2021, 03:54:23 PM
Captain of huge container vessel ‚Ever Given’ uses his 200 foot, 224,000 ton ship to draw a dick pick into the Red Sea then gets his vessel stuck in the Suez Canal.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-56505413

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/cargo-ship-ever-given-penis/

I would make a dick move joke but Snopes already beat me to the punch.

The official explanation is that the ship ran aground during a sand storm. It might take weeks to remove the vessel and the Suez Canal is blocked off completely for ship traffic probably affecting global supply chains for months.

Hello to the PS5s on the 206 ships backed up behind it.

PS5's shipped to the US would still not be impacted. All shipments to the US from the far-east go across the Pacific, not through the Suez.

Analysis of what likely happened:

Financial Times: The bank effect and the big boat blocking the Suez (https://www.ft.com/content/171c92ec-0a44-4dc5-acab-81ee2620d3c1)

And an actual viewable copy of article: https://archive.is/pmUEm#selection-1591.0-1591.50 (paywalled)

tl;dr in a shallow bottom waterway like the Suez Canel as you get closer to a bank the stern (rear) of the boat can get pulled in towards the bank because of a pressure drop as the displaced water moves past and the bow (front) gets pushed away and because of the wind conditions at the time the pilot may have been compensating on the steering and got too close to a bank when the wind suddenly dropped causing the ship to rotate further and plow into the side of one of the banks.

I am probably just a bad person, but I give no fucks about this and think the whole thing is pretty lulz.

The main problem is that companies don't store product these days, so any effects will be quick in coming. This was the reason they used to store a certain amount of material

Anyway Suez constipation seen from SPACE, via the ESA

I mean, a bit of a pandemic showed the world the problem with Just In Time.  Companies have almost no resiliency, and everything can crumble for no good reason other than a ship turning sideways.  We deserve all of it.

Seems like it might be a hilarious time for a bunch of Red Sea pirates to go on a sea cruise north.

They don't need to, they have plenty of ships now that are going the long way around to go after.

Edit: oops you said Red Sea pirates, NM

If pirates happened to find a ship with a couple of containers full of PS5's they would be set for life.

Well, it would be fun to see some other kind of mangled English in the reseller offers, I guess.

On pirates, well, good the fuck luck to a pirate that wants to specialize in interceptions off the Cape of Good Hope or anywhere from about Maputo onward in that passage--seems like a pretty great way to get sunk just by weather alone.

The piracy they are worried about is along the West African  coast farther north.

Seriously? Who is worried about that? There isn't any now to speak of, that I know of, compared to Northeast Africa or Southeast Asia. I'm sure there are dudes who can pivot quickly but the kinds of places that folks might operate out of are busy enough with on-land operations or the dangerous organizations have no coastal presence to speak of.

Ship was freed / refloated and being pulled slowly to an anchor point but then swung around again but is not aground. So it may still be a while before the canal is clear to send ships through.

Now we get to see the jams at ports as the ships all compete for Dock space, as 12% of world trade is running 8 to 12 days behind.
