Title: This forum needs a topic, it looks lonely. (f13 1st anniversary)
Post by: Bunk on March 18, 2004, 07:57:59 AM
I like the idea of opening up the topics on these boards a little.  I frequented WTo because it was one of the few boards left with a good mix of IQ and hate.  Now we might actually have somewhere intelligent to talk about how much we hate current media of other forms as well.

I also like the ide of this board because I've come to realize that at 32 I double the average age of most of the posters on Rotten Tomatoes' forums, so that place has pretty much gone to shit for getting a useful opinion on something.  So, I'll start the ball rolling here with a movie I just recently bought, that I would like to hear some other opinions on.

Ginger Snaps

Canadian, 2000

I'm curious what other people thought of this movie, if anyone else has in fact seen it.  Its a low budget Canadian horror about two sisters living in a nondescript suburb that have a runin with a werewolf.  Keeping this as spoiler free as possible, its a story that mixes the trials of puberty and social acceptance with becoming a werewolf and wanting to eat all of the neighbour's dogs...  Beleive it or not, it actually works.

The acting is top notch by both of the lead actresses, and the story is much more involved and creative than what you find in your typical teen horrors these days.  I really wish I could see more movies like this without having to hunt them out at the divey little downtown arthouses where they actually get shown.

So has anyone else out there actually seen this movie, or have an oppinion?

I saw this one a while back, wasn't really something that I enjoyed that much.

Memory's a little hazy, but as I recall my problem with it was that it wasn't so much a 'teen-angst with extra werewolfy goodness' thing as a 'beat you over the head with werewolves-as-metaphor-for-puberty' thing.

Dog Soldiers was more my speed :)

Haven't seen this yet (and I'm Canadian), but i've heard many good things about it. There was also a sequel released for it in 2003 IIRC, so if you enjoyed the first, i'd suggest checking out the sequel.

Ginger Snaps is a low budget horror flick that is one of those that stand out from the crowd.  Excellent cinematography, acting, directing, and writing.  Could be considered an heir to Evil Dead (not as gory as Evil Dead, but well done on a tiny budget).

I await the sequel's release in the US.

The sequel played briefly in the theatres here in Vancouver, but i skipped it because it took Amazon a bloody month to ship me the original, and I hate seing movies out of order.  It sounds like it is being released on DVD quite soon though.

If you're curious, I picked up the special edition DVD from Amazon.ca for $14.95.  Came out to $22 Canadian total including shipping/taxes, so not a bad deal.

I must agree with tar; Dog Soldiers is a better movie in every way, whether or not you include the werewolf aspect.  I've been looking for a poster that has the movie cover on it without much luck.

What better way to celebrate than with thread necromancy?   :-D  Happy birthday, f13!

Staff has appropriate avatars. Cept Fabricated because I couldn't think of something since his last avatar got a hat. We may give out some grief titles, maybe even run a contest some time this month. Maybe. Possibly. Ok, probably not. But feel free to send us nice things.

It's a year later and I hate you all a little less. Some of you a little more. In that spirit, I offer you....

PAELOS' TOP TEN THINGS TO EXPECT FROM F13 IN THE NEXT YEAR!

1 - Useless news will develop a cult following that will lead to so many threads about cock, we will be linked to gay porn sites.
2 - WoW will make a critical error with it's fanbase, there will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth, until the next shiney.
3 - Schild will produce an F13 movie, but it will only get critical claim in Japan. This will be seen as a success to him.
4 - Lawmakers will propose reactionary laws against videogame violence. Haemish will get stabby, thus proving the laws validity
5 - Monkeys will be allowed to moderate the forums for a day while the mods are on vacation. Most posters won't notice the difference.
6 - Bruce will be banned, then descend into hell, rise into the forums again in three days, and establish himself as the Furry Jesus
7 - The safeguards on the Den of Iniquity will fail, releasing the ghosts of threads past onto the unsuspecting threads of the site. Many lives will be lost.
8 - The Politics forum will become a place of where ideas are exchanged freely and without malice. Pigs will fly.
9 - "Stupidiotasshatcockmonkey" will be popularized in the F13 vernacular by Haemish's next MMOG review.
10 - And finally, love and peace will spread across the site, leading to a new age of gaming enlightenment, in which we collectively design and implement the MMOG which Raph tells us will save the world.

Happy B-Day F13.net, shine on your crazy diamond!

You on the meds again schild? Since when does wishing f13 a happy birthday steal it's thunder? ;)

Happy Birthday to f13.  Kudos to schild for so closely following the teachings of Jesus in maintaining this site.  All my best to the Apostles, St. Haemish, patron saint of fascinating wibble; St. Shockeye, patron saint of useless wibble;  St. Rasix,  patron saint of dead camels; St. Fabricated, patron saint of unknown patron saints.  Best wishes also to that administrator name Administrator who seems to have buggered off.   Who did I forget?

Maybe Ralphie will show up and have Tubgirl shit a cake all over this thread.

If so, I'm not touching the cake.

Not that I would touch a cake that was baked by any of you degenerates.

"Stupidiotasshatcockmonkey" will have to be the name of my next bad review.

I nearly had that image(Tubgirl) out of my mind.  It nearly worked its way out of there back into the dark recesses where it would only be retrieved through some sort of trauma or psychological probing.

Thanks fuckers.  No more mentioning of she-who-shall-not-be-named.  Think of her as f13's Voldemort.

And make the contest a UT2k4 contest....I think that would be swell.

I was kidding. I think we need to make serious tags. [Serious]Don't take things embedded in terrible pop culture reference to be serious[/serious].

I'm still trying to come up with grief titles. My brain, it does not like me sometimes.

Well, since a hamster lives approximately 2 years, I suppose a hamster year would be about 35 human years.

I think my near death experience with the Frankenfruit has made me take life very seiously.

Now that I have like a second off from work, I just wanted to say:

Happy Anniversary little F13. You are only 1 so you get two spankings. One for your age and one to keep growing.
