Title: Prince has died
Post by: Paelos on April 21, 2016, 10:10:27 AM
AP is running the story now. Prince is dead at 57. No details yet on how.

This sucks. Him and Bowie in the same year.

Maybe? He was 57 going on 22.

https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=prince+dead&tbm=nws

Maybe we can finally get that bizarre Kevin Smith documentary.

Edit: Removed maybe, cue dove headlines.

Yes, this sucks pretty hard for music.

He was evidently hospitalized with a very bad Flu over the weekend.

Well damn, he was one strange dude, but he could sure as hell play the guitar. Never saw him live, but his Superbowl Halftime show was probably the best one I've ever seen.

RIP

And Glenn Frey as well.

Sad news, he was a very talented musician.  I really enjoyed his music in the 80s.  The 90s?  Whenever.

Good god what is going on. 57 is way too young ...

Pretty sure his video for "I Would Die for You" is burned into my memory more than his others. Really know you are getting older when the actors and musicians you grew up with start kicking off.

Immensely talented but eccentric guy.  Music lost a true artist here.  Being from Minneapolis and having watched him up close in the early 80's, it's another part of my youth gone.

Sad day.

Shit, another really unexpected death  :heartbreak:

There were a lot of similarities for me between Prince & Bowie actually. Both incredible musicians, extremely influential in the music world, both a bit... odd. Also, I liked both of their early works much more than later stuff.

AIDS. Not trying to troll or be a dick, just a guess given his past lifestyle and going from "flu" to corpse in a couple of weeks. Could have been untreated pneumonia too, but any decent health care provider would have found that in plenty of time to prevent his death. THere are some cancers that don't have any noticeable symptoms until you're pretty much done for, and even then they feel like a flu. Lymphoma comes to mind.

But this does in fact suck, Prince and Morris day were the bulk of the music I listened too in high school. Purple Rain was one of the first movies I went to the drive-in to see, if you get my meaning.

Random touch with Prince story...

I get a random call at 3AM from a friend who's going through a bad breakup and is just a complete shitshow. Said friend is a music producer. He puts me on hold about 10 minutes into the call as he's got another call. He comes back a few minutes later, "it's Prince on the other line, you should talk to him."

The fuck?

Next thing I know, I'm in a conference call with this guy and Prince.

"What are we gonna do about our boy?", Prince asks.

"I don't know! You're Prince, you're asking me? Work your magic, man!"

"Alright."

"Okay guys, you work this shit out without me, Prince, it was nice talking to you... At three in the fucking morning..."

Bizarre.

I remember seeing that live on TV and my fiancee and I looking at each other, each thinking how much Prince just kerpwned that stage.

He is one of the most underrated musicians of our time, I've likened him to a funky modern Hendrix (who was also very experimental). And style for days.

Were you a teenager or in your 20's during the 80's? There's not really a current equivalent. I guess sort of like Taylor Swift if she sand about stuff besides her bad relationships.

I believe he played all the instruments on his first 5 albums.  Very underrated musician and a hell of a guitar player.

For a time after Purple Rain came out, he was pretty much like Rock's version of Michael Jackson.  He ended up going in a direction that was probably a bit too strange for most people, but had he decided he wanted to be a mainstream superstar, then that's exactly what he would have been and this page would be 6 pages long by now.

I actually don't think it is that bad of a comparison, just not 100% complete. Swift is writing her own stuff and is fully in command of both pop music and her own image. Prince just took it to another level.

All you have to do is listen to Kevin Smith or anyone else's stories about Prince to realize Murphys had to be true. Hell, even surliboys lends credence to it.

When I got to know my singer, we had very little crossover in music but it was really amazing hanging out turning each other on to albums. Early Prince is one he turned me onto, lots of funky stuff. Stuff like Prince made me realize just how diverse badass guitar music could be.

And then I'd turn him onto something like "Gimme Back my Bullets" to show how heavy southern rock could get. That was such a great time!

He also wrote a lot of music that main stream peroformers did and made big hits. His thing was I am not going to give you what you say you want I am going to try to give you what you really need musically and that was some really odd avenues but even his odd stuff like the original batman sound track were still some really good tunes.

Google also gave him a nice doodle, for a few hours before Earth Day.

I was always somewhat turned off by his attitude and particular eccentricity, but there in no denying his creative genius and his incredible talent.

I find myself more moved by his passing than I would have thought.

Rest in Peace.

His music helped define the 80's and 90's which is my teen/young adult years. That sticks with ya. Looking at his work in perspective to the industry and his talent and a musician, he is rightly enshrined in the Hall. For me, he was odd...just like almost all the geniuses in the world - no one I think I could hang out with. I think he rubbed a lot of people wrong when he drifted to the background and changed his name to a Symbol. That was too much for a lot of people.

Him as a person, didn't really float with a lot of people in popular culture. Him as an artist in music, a monster which I am glad I got to live through those years. For me, he hits a bit more since Bowie was a few years before I was coming into my own. Enjoyed Bowie after-the-fact in that I didn't get into his music till I was in college and never really caught up. Prince happened at the same time I was getting into music.

My wife & I are decorating our spare room this weekend, so naturally we're doing it to a constant Prince soundtrack. So many good albums. I'd kind of forgotten about Parade, fantastic album. It's so long since I've listened to it that I was waiting for the sound of the needle clunking off of the vinyl LP at the end of 'Sometimes it snows in April', which didn't happen because I have it on CD now.

I spent ages getting really annoyed with various digital media players that didn't do gapless playback because of albums like The Wall and Purple Rain. Ridiculously it's still a problem and one of the main reasons I often use Windows Media Player.

Prince kind of fell off my radar in the last decade or so, and I didn't think much of Purple Rain at the time it was released, but in the early 90's I really got to appreciate him and how work and picked up a good half-dozen of his albums, both as they were released and the classics. Always felt that he was just about the most talented musician alive, though. A huge shame about his passing. It feels like only Madonna is left of those huge, huge '80s megastars.

Ironically the mp3 disc I burned of the 1998 Tramps Prince show I've been listening to fucked up the gaps and it's making me nuts, because it's kinda just one long jam (that wouldn't fit on a redbook disc).
