Title: The Muppets (2015) Post by: Trippy on July 22, 2015, 11:26:14 AM On ABC this Fall (http://abc.go.com/shows/the-muppets).
Quote The Muppets return to primetime with a contemporary, documentary-style show. For the first time ever, a series will explore the Muppets’ personal lives and relationships, both at home and at work, as well as romances, breakups, achievements, disappointments, wants and desires. Title: Re: The Muppets (2015) Post by: jgsugden on July 22, 2015, 12:02:40 PM AKA, the Greg the Bunny reboot. I miss my fabricated Americans.
Title: Re: The Muppets (2015) Post by: Slyfeind on July 22, 2015, 12:16:11 PM God yes.
I started watching the trailer, thinking that the only way it could be funnier is if they made fun of the entire concept. Then Gonzo made fun of the entire concept. Cannot wait. Title: Re: The Muppets (2015) Post by: Merusk on July 22, 2015, 12:26:52 PM My only disappointment is that awful, awful, awful Rowlf voice. Rowlf was one of my favorites and that didn't sound like Bill Barretta at all. (Who has voiced Rowlf since Jim died.)
Title: Re: The Muppets (2015) Post by: Chimpy on July 22, 2015, 12:47:06 PM I have heard that Frank Oz retired from voice acting so I am sure a lot of the other voices are going to sound "off". I think I will have more trouble with that than I did with Henson's characters as (with the exception of Ms Piggy) Frank Oz voiced most of my favorite characters.

Title: Re: The Muppets (2015) Post by: Trippy on July 22, 2015, 01:48:55 PM My only disappointment is that awful, awful, awful Rowlf voice. Rowlf was one of my favorites and that didn't sound like Bill Barretta at all. (Who has voiced Rowlf since Jim died.) But it was Bill Barretta:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2B5d-8H588#t=10m18s (Paste into new window/tab, don't use the popup, it doesn't support timestamps) Title: Re: The Muppets (2015) Post by: Merusk on July 22, 2015, 02:07:10 PM Yeah, IDK what's up. Maybe he was ill that day or mentally stuck in another voice. That didn't sound like Rowlf, there was none of the low-end gravel to it. Too much Pepe that day, maybe. Here's "From The Balcony" for comparison.
https://youtu.be/2W3kNkrZShE?t=139 (same deal with the timestamp) It's a nitpick, to be sure, but it's always one of those things that stands out: when muppets that don't sound right. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxfbLXeCa5Y Title: Re: The Muppets (2015) Post by: jgsugden on July 22, 2015, 05:02:53 PM Muppets are timeless. Voice actors are not. There is some of the same drift in the Simpsons, but not to this extent.

Title: Re: The Muppets (2015) Post by: shiznitz on July 23, 2015, 08:57:11 AM I have no interest in The Muppets and am confused by all the excitement. Yes, I did watch them as a kid and they should have stayed in the 70s.

Did I mention Uncle-Woman here yet? Title: Re: The Muppets (2015) Post by: Setanta on July 24, 2015, 01:04:54 AM I have no interest in The Muppets and am confused by all the excitement. Emo is so 1990s and not edgy anymore Just a FYI :D Title: Re: The Muppets (2015) Post by: Chimpy on September 22, 2015, 11:06:21 AM This premieres tonight. First network television show I will be watching on purpose when it airs in a long time.
Title: Re: The Muppets (2015) Post by: jgsugden on September 22, 2015, 01:43:03 PM Sadly, I'm hearing that it is thinner on laughs than the previews indicated. However, I hear the pilot is the weakest of the early episodes.
Title: Re: The Muppets (2015) Post by: Phildo on September 22, 2015, 01:50:18 PM It really peaks in the 3rd season, though.
Title: Re: The Muppets (2015) Post by: Yegolev on September 22, 2015, 01:50:52 PM Best to cash out now, prior to the collapse.
Title: Re: The Muppets (2015) Post by: Lakov_Sanite on September 22, 2015, 02:26:48 PM "thin on plot" so, the muppets.
Title: Re: The Muppets (2015) Post by: Merusk on September 22, 2015, 04:25:24 PM "thin on plot" so, the muppets. Other "valid" complaints: Not enough boobs Where's the DRAMA. The ANGST. How can I binge watch this without gravitas?! :awesome_for_real: Title: Re: The Muppets (2015) Post by: Chimpy on September 22, 2015, 05:37:01 PM Was a bit underwhelming. Will still watch next week to see if it is better.
Title: Re: The Muppets (2015) Post by: MahrinSkel on September 22, 2015, 06:59:49 PM Yeah.... The "30 Rock meets The Office" gimmick seemed a little forced, but I guess it is as close as they can get to the "Variety Show" gimmick of the original.
Needs more silly shtick, less plot. I don't want to see Kermit resolving his midlife crisis, I want more one liners. They had some good bits, padded out with drama I don't need in a puppet show. The jokes are supposed to be lame, giving us time to think about how lame they were while Fozzy plays "Guess who's coming to dinner" from the alternate universe where Poitier's part was played by Woody Allen in a fur suit, doesn't make them funnier. --Dave Title: Re: The Muppets (2015) Post by: Lakov_Sanite on September 22, 2015, 07:20:36 PM Actually it most reminded me of the Larry Sanders Show.
Title: Re: The Muppets (2015) Post by: Merusk on September 22, 2015, 07:51:16 PM Yeah, awkward funny vs. shtick. I enjoyed it.
Title: Re: The Muppets (2015) Post by: Segoris on September 22, 2015, 09:30:08 PM It was hit and miss throughout the show, and being better than most shit on TV atm I'll at least give it a few more episodes.
Best quote goes to Fozzie: "when your online profile states you're a passionate bear looking for love you get a lot of wrong responses" :why_so_serious: Title: Re: The Muppets (2015) Post by: Lantyssa on September 23, 2015, 07:42:20 AM Hah!

:awesome_for_real: Title: Re: The Muppets (2015) Post by: Quinton on September 27, 2015, 07:00:00 AM That was pretty rough. Will give them a few more episodes and see if they end up somewhere a bit more consistently entertaining.
The Muppet Show is both hard to live up to (for older fans) and a straight re-make probably would not work well on modern TV (for younger audiences), so I appreciate that they don't have it easy here. Title: Re: The Muppets (2015) Post by: Triax on October 07, 2015, 11:09:19 PM OH.MY.FUCKING.GOD....do they have the Swedish chef doing Rapper's Delight next episode?? :Love_Letters:

Enough so that I will watch the fourth, had it been on the same level as episode 2 I probably would have given up there. Title: Re: The Muppets (2015) Post by: Quinton on October 15, 2015, 12:06:10 PM Episode four was pretty solidly funny. The B plot with Fozzie was a little weak (I just don't think Fozzie works well on his own), but the A plot entertained. The Swedish Chef rapping was great.
Title: Re: The Muppets (2015) Post by: Merusk on October 15, 2015, 12:23:47 PM Fozzie has always, ironically, worked best as the straight man. Having him lead a storyline doesn't work well unless the other people are crazy rather than cruel.
