Title: Straight Outta Compton Post by: Evildrider on February 09, 2015, 02:28:31 PM Red band trailer. (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OrlLcb7zYmw)
This looks pretty good. Not sure how many NWA fans would be on this board, but these guys really did change rap music at the time. mod edit: Trailer is NSFW. So, beware. Boobs, butts, etc. Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: IainC on February 09, 2015, 02:44:05 PM I am a big NWA fan. Looking forward to this although I suspect it will be retconned to fuck.
Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: HaemishM on February 09, 2015, 02:45:40 PM Yeah, I'm down but I tend to agree with IainC. They're probably be a lot of ego-inflating by the parties that are still alive.
Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: Merusk on February 09, 2015, 04:04:13 PM Wasn't shug knight just shot on this set?
Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: HaemishM on February 09, 2015, 04:19:06 PM No, he apparently had beef with somebody on the set, followed them then ran that person over with his car or some shit.
Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: MrHat on February 09, 2015, 04:39:33 PM Looks good. But I totally expected that to be a Lincoln commercial after the first 60s.
Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: Threash on February 09, 2015, 06:22:15 PM No, he apparently had beef with somebody on the set, followed them then ran that person over with his car or some shit. No, he actually ran the person who came with him over. Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: sickrubik on February 09, 2015, 09:46:13 PM I'm not sure how much "retconning" there will be other. Viewing the events with "rose colored lenses" may be more apt.
NWA was always pretty up front with what they were doing with the music. Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: Raguel on February 10, 2015, 06:57:21 AM I had no idea Ice Cube's son was the actor portraying him. I was wondering how they got someone who looked so much and sounded so much like him.
I just had a depressing thought: "Fuck the Police" could have been written at any point in my lifetime and still be relevant. Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: schild on February 10, 2015, 10:59:06 AM This looks fucking amazing and I hope they retcon/glamorize the whole goddamn story.
Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: sickrubik on February 10, 2015, 11:06:30 AM Both NWA and Public Enemy are indeed far too topical, even today.
... Now I want a PE biopic. Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: WayAbvPar on February 10, 2015, 11:10:29 AM Can't fucking wait. Although I might be a pussy and go see this in the whitest neighborhood I can find. I remember seeing Boys N Tha Hood in Kirkland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirkland,_Washington) and being interviewed about it by a local news channel...I think they were afraid to go ask questions in a more ethnic neighborhood :awesome_for_real:
Would love some PE stuff too. I spent the week before the Super Bowl listening to By The Time I Get To Arizona over and over. Not even in my top 10 PE songs, but it was appropriate for the Super Bowl. Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: 01101010 on February 10, 2015, 11:13:37 AM Would love some PE stuff too. I spent the week before the Super Bowl listening to By The Time I Get To Arizona over and over. Not even in my top 10 PE songs, but it was appropriate for the Super Bowl. Dunno how curious I am to see how Flava Flav came up... Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: WayAbvPar on February 10, 2015, 11:20:12 AM I am pretty sure he was hatched somewhere and imported.
Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: schild on February 10, 2015, 12:02:19 PM Can't fucking wait. Although I might be a pussy and go see this in the whitest neighborhood I can find. The news isn't exactly rocket science. (you pussy) Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: IainC on February 10, 2015, 12:55:44 PM I was the whitest person in the room at every PE concert I ever went to. To be fair I am the whitest person in the room in pretty much any company. I am however, legitimately straight outta Compton.

Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: Surlyboi on February 10, 2015, 07:39:24 PM I was sitting backstage at some random charity show about 10 years ago and Chuck D is sitting there, being Chuck D. We struck up a conversation and I told him how much I'd hated hiphop until I listened to Fear of a Black Planet. Last question I asked him was, "What's up with your boy Flav?"
"I have no fucking idea." Was his thoughtful response. Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: HaemishM on February 11, 2015, 10:31:13 AM Flava Flav is most assuredly living on a different fucking planet than all of us.
Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: sickrubik on February 11, 2015, 10:35:45 AM The dude's apparently a prodigy of some sort. Those people are often wired a little weirdly.
Still, best hypeman of all time. Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: Chimpy on February 11, 2015, 11:35:44 AM Flava Flav reminds me of the goblins from Labyrinth.
Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: sickrubik on February 11, 2015, 11:40:05 AM Now I want a Dance Magic Dance/PE mashup.
Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: glennshin on February 11, 2015, 02:54:39 PM My brother lives in the same gated community as Flav ( & Vanderlei Silva, no relevance to the story just odd that he's there too). Just this passed Halloween, we had all the lil' ones out and Trick or treating when this IIRC black drop top mercedes w/ street glow pulls up and asks if any kids needs more candy. I immediately assumed some stranger danger. Worries are dismissed as my brother says "what's up" & then gives him a fist bump. Flav then takes out pillow cases w/ full size candies & tells everyone to take it all don't be shy. Of course the kids lose their shit & does as he says. I don't know if it was always an act, or if he calmed down in his old age but he seems to be a legitimately decent dude. Oh, and it seemed odd that he turned down his eccentricity for Halloween because he only wore a small clock. Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: HaemishM on February 11, 2015, 02:59:20 PM I think Flav's always been a decent guy. His persona is just that of an asshole space cadet but as a person, I always got the impression he wasn't a shithead.
Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: sickrubik on February 11, 2015, 03:10:41 PM He's had his fair share of issues:

Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: CmdrSlack on February 11, 2015, 09:32:26 PM I cannot express how much I'd also like to see a KRS-One/BDP biopic.
Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: 01101010 on February 12, 2015, 04:20:51 AM I cannot express how much I'd also like to see a KRS-One/BDP biopic. :drill: Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: HaemishM on February 12, 2015, 08:01:51 AM While I totally agree, I'm sure 95% of the people presented with such a movie would go "Who?"
Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: 01101010 on February 12, 2015, 08:51:32 AM I still watch Krushgroove when I am nostalgic.
Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: lamaros on February 12, 2015, 02:50:02 PM I can't be the only one who thinks this looks pretty average, right?
Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: Rendakor on February 12, 2015, 05:05:32 PM I'm not into rap at all so I'm with you lamaros.
Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: Evildrider on February 12, 2015, 05:07:06 PM I'm not into rap at all so I'm with you lamaros. Yeah if you don't like the premise of the movie, you probably won't be as thrilled about it. Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: lamaros on February 12, 2015, 07:27:14 PM I'm a big fan of rap and hip-hop, but this just looks like a music video.
Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: 01101010 on February 13, 2015, 03:39:39 AM I'm a big fan of rap and hip-hop, but this just looks like a music video. More like VH1's Behind the Music... but I liked those when they were made about artists I enjoy. Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: K9 on February 13, 2015, 04:32:53 AM I think this could be good fun
Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: HaemishM on February 13, 2015, 09:12:36 AM If by average you mean it looks like a by the numbers biopic made by whoever is left alive aggrandizing their own accomplishments, you're probably right. That's also probably about as much as you could expect from it given who is behind the production.
I still think it'd be interesting because I loved NWA and Easy-E back in the day. Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: WayAbvPar on February 13, 2015, 01:45:15 PM Yeah, I grew up on this shit. I hope there are cameos and meetings with the other artists of the day like Ice-T, Public Enemy, BDP, Kool Moe Dee, etc. That would be a lot of fun.
Title: Re: Straight Outta Compton Post by: sickrubik on February 14, 2015, 12:57:20 PM I still think it'd be interesting because I loved NWA and Easy-E back in the day. Was Easy-E his more laid back brother? |
