Title: GRAV
Post by: Samwise on January 11, 2015, 04:22:12 PM
Just came across this on Steam. (http://store.steampowered.com/app/332500/)

It sounds like Rust, except in space, and everyone has pants.

I'm not quite curious enough to buy it, but almost.  Anyone actually played this and have thoughts to share?

People keep saying something about "The Stomping Land scam" in the user reviews. I don't feel like googling now but... that doesn't sound right.

Stomping Lands was/is a survival game where you were a cave man. THe game promised a bunch of interesting, new stuff like killing/taming dinosaurs. It got greenlit on steam and you could buy into pre-alpha access for $25. What you got was functional and just interesting enough to show the game worked. You could build a fire, build a shelter, kill dinosaurs, and kill other players. The devs also put it up on kickstarter with $20,000 to fund it and got just over $100,000. The Devs then took all that money they made and disappeared into the mists of the internet and never updated anything ever again. The gameplay stagnated into a beach hobo murder simulator where the few players left just ran up and down the beach killing each other with stone axes. No one has any idea who the hell they actually were or how to contact them. Their official website is now default parked GoDaddy content. That all might have changed since I last looked, but I doubt the story had a happy ending for any of the people who gave them money.

So I imagine it's legally not fraud, but in every other sense it was a quick money grab that was never intended to be any more than it was.

Stomping Land was actually pulled from the Steam store for a while.  This was after the dev went dark, so people thought Steam was noticing something fishy.  Game is back now, though, I think.  Nobody outside Steam really KNOWS why the game was yanked in the first place, so there are lots of accusations of scamming.

Though "scam" is kind of a vague word nowadays anyway, people use it to refer to any bad game.
