Title: Predestination
Post by: Khaldun on January 09, 2015, 08:08:00 PM
New movie out this week. Was surprised to see it pop up as a rental on FIOS at a good price. (Cheaper than taking three people to see it in the movie theater.)

Based on a Heinlein time travel story, late-era Heinlein of a similar vein to Time Enough For Love. Which for Heinlein readers gives you a big hint. I liked it way more than I expected to, though it's a bit like an extended episode of The Twilight Zone or Black Mirror. Sort of like Looper meets Jeffrey Eugenides' novel Middlesex.

Gonna take a wild guess:
Dunno why I spoilered that, anyone enough of a Heinlein geek to have read Expanded Universe spotted it right away. Although it actually would have been fairly early Heinlein (late 50's, I think).

Yup, based on All You Zombies. And you're right, it's earlier than I thought. Not sure why I thought it was a later story. Has some of his late-era affectations so I guess that's it.

Enjoy this movie and impressed the story was written in 1958.

Playing God is an understatement on birth and death.

Necro!

This finally made its way to my Netflix DVD queue.  As a fan of the original story I was pleasantly surprised (after A Sound of Thunder I get really nervous about movie adaptations of classic sci-fi short stories).  The movie layered some fun extra stuff onto the original story and didn't fuck with the core elements that made the story good.  Worth watching.

Loved it. This movie is a perfect example of why this forum is great.
