Title: Stranded Deep...
Post by: MournelitheCalix on December 22, 2014, 05:12:36 PM
I didn't see a topic on this game.  I first heard about it two years ago, saw the first gameplay trailer, and was pretty blown away by the intensity of watching it.  Since I heard nothing about it, I thought it went the way of vapor ware, but looking on its greenlight page, apparently its about ready to release in January.  The entire thing looks like it has been revamped, and I am pretty psyched up to play it.  Premise is simple, you survive a crash, are stranded and have to survive.  Starvation, exposure, dehydration, and the critters (ie sharks) are your enemies in this procedurally generated world.

Along the way you will supposedly build rafts, shelters, weapons, and traps trying to survive.  Supposedly you will swim, you will dive, and on land try to stay alive.  Links below, good luck Beam Team Games, and I can't wait:

Steam Link (http://store.steampowered.com/app/313120/). It's still in early access, but it is looking good.

If anyone picked this up already, any feedback on how it's coming along? I'm really interested but I'd like it to be (at least) mostly complete.

I bought it day one and honestly it was everything I was hoping for.  The atmosphere in it is amazing, pretty much dead on what it should be.  Though the atmosphere of the game is dead on, the gameplay right now needs some work.  Keep in mind though the game just released and it is in alpha.    I want to stress that so far, its in alpha, but so far I am amazed by how good the game is.  I really can't wait to see what they do to finish it out.

The Bad So Far in Alpha:
1.  Hunger and thirst haven't been tweaked anywhere near where they need to be.
2.  Exposure isn't much of an issue either at this point and remains largely unimplemented.
3.  Navigation from island to island has a lot of graphical errors, tides are also pretty much unimplemented.
4.  The wildlife is bizarre and limited, the choices even more so.  For being in the Pacific, the fish species chosen come right out of a freshwater fish store.
5.  There are some rather interesting errors, whales swimming through islands for instance, surfing sharks, and land sharks.
6.  Too easy to kill sharks at the islands.
7.  Right now, no end game & not enough to do. (it would be nice to have intermediate goals)
8.  No permadeath mode (good for some, bad for others).

The Unquestionably awesome:
1.  The environmental feel is dead one, its an amazing looking game.
2.  Animal movement is for the most part really well animated.  The sharks, marlin really move in realistic ways.
3.  There are moments of utter terror in this game.  Try being unable to see due to fog, caught in the middle of no where, and in a raft being thrown around by bumping great whites.
4.  Its a really great exploration game.  There are wrecks to explore everywhere.  Not all of them contain something useful, most so far don't.
5.  Islands are small and you have to constantly visit new ones to build structure and expand your camp.

That is exactly what I was looking for, so thanks for that. Sounds like I'll be better off holding out for just a bit more since gameplay implementation is more what I enjoy than scenery and atmosphere.

Is the plan to have you actually win and get rescued? I don't like to play games where the only goal is HEY DON'T DIE BUT YOU WILL DIE SO SEE HOW LONG YOU LAST!

This sounds really cool, but I don't really want to deal with an incomplete mess.

I purchased the game because I was intrigued.  It IS very incomplete right now, but still kind of cool (but really, no reason to buy right now unless you want to support it, like I kind of did).  Anyways, to your question, I've already found some flare guns in an abandoned ship.  This would suggest to me there is an opportunity to save yourself.  Which is important, since I'm totally with you that survival games are only fun with a goal that isn't "seeing how long you can last till you die".  Long dark was kind of a bummer in that way (but still pretty fun).  Also, the end of every cast away type story is the person eventually doing something to get rescued.  Would be crazy for them not to have some kind of out.

I'd hope that replay value could be found in achieving milestones in a number of ways.  i.e. Fastest rescue, longest survival, healthiest, most xxx found, best shelter, etc.

I'd love it if they made a mountain man game like this a la Jeramiah Johnson.

Who gets to play the bear?

The Long Dark totally plans to add a story *sigh* at some point...

EDIT: I am curious. I've never played it, but how does "Don't starve" deal with that? I mean, is there and end goal to it? And if there is, how's it for replayability?

Don't Starve has a sandbox mode and an adventure mode.  Sandbox mode is just survive.  Adventure mode has a storyline with a series of chapters that you can work through and beat.  I haven't played adventure mode though, I'm actually one of those people who doesn't really care for win conditions in these sorts of games.

It's always funny how everytime Malakili talks about games I realize he is my polar opposite of what I find fun. Haha.

Different strokes and all that.

I'm just not a very goal oriented person in general.

For those interested Stranded Deep just introduced a new graphics, land mass, and ocean patch and the Ocean part is in my opinion revolutionary for gaming.  I have never seen an ocean more faithfully rendered.  Instead of being a time waster that is simply there to house sharks, the new ocean really has a life of its own.  The motions on the surface really do appear to affect therafts itself now and the waves reveal rocks as one would expect it to irl.  This is but the first stage according to the devs and it really is worth a look/ trying out if you have bought the game.

Wow, thanks for the update!  I really enjoy the premise of this game, but gave it a break since I could tell it still had a lot of development left.  Once I can break free of my latest Diablo 3 addiction, I'll fire it back up.
