Title: Skyforge aka In Russia game grind you
Post by: calapine on December 01, 2014, 02:53:09 AM
A collaboration between some Russians (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allods_Team) and...Obsidian.   :uhrr:

The Russian closed-beta has been going on since September, technical beta in "the West" just started. What I heard so far:

-- Apparently extremely theme-parky.

-- Targeting is reticule based, ie no tab-targeting/target lock.

-- Leveling one character allows progressing through all classes. Characters can switch their class, a bit like dual-spec on a WoW rogue works. All classes can switch to all other classes. So no need for alts.

Announcment Trailer (http://youtu.be/0_eV6RhtRr0)

Cryomancer class (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_e6p_MjmF0)

Berseker class (http://youtu.be/R1o8f1BSJeA)

Devblog (http://sf.my.com/us/forum/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=429) explaining how leveling works.

Not sure if I have any interest in this, but surprised it didn't show up on F13's radar so far.

Thoughts?

Cryomancer. I know it's and ice wizard, but it should really be a forum title in every MMO forum ever.

Do you have any beta keys?  If not, get to playing their beta key minigame (Aelion’s Treasure).  No yah, a beta key minigame.   :awesome_for_real:
Really though, start playing so I can have one.

They are selling three different founder packs that gives you access to beta. $20 for cheapest, $50 and you get the benefit of playing berzerker during beta, $70 and you can play berzerker and gunner during beta. Most expensive also gives you a legendary weapon, rare rings, an exclusive mount, credits, spark replicators used for character advancement in the ascension atlas rand a huge chunk of enhancement stones.

Russian p2w crap.

I would of been interested in this game and then 10 seconds later I found out it was made by Allods. Horseshit company.

The most objective, complete and informative video review I've seen so far for this game. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRwz8PeGBPM) Here is all you need to know about Skyforge.

I have 2 keys for the next closed beta, which starts tomorrow.  If anyone wants them, let me know.

Is it a game you can solo in, or do you need to be social and group up?  'cause a key would be completely wasted on me if it requires any of the latter.

If you only want to solo, you definitely can (at least for the first chunk of the game, who knows if that'll keep up in endgame). There's group/raid/guild war content with drops that you can't find in solo content of course, but if you don't care about that, the main "storyline" such as it is seemed entirely single player, at least for the eight or so hours I played in an earlier beta. I never grouped with anyone and didn't hit a wall.

So I've played this a bit more and have its not too bad.  Combat is sort of a cross between Tera and Neverwinter Online, with more action type combat with dodge rolling.  It is a linear type theme park set in a sci fi meets Rome setting.  I've so far been able to solo everything but you can group and have an option to makes things more challenging.  There is a cash shop and it does sell some boost items but it doesn't look to be as bad as NWO.  I still have the 2 keys if anyone wants them.

No it is not at all like Tera. It gives the illusion that moving around and aiming matters but it really does not.

I played the gunner class in Tera a lot and the gunner class in Skyforge feels very similar.  I didn't try the melee classes much so I can't comment on them.  The combat is obviously not the same between the two games they're more similar than other MMO's.

Game's out now in founder headstart, open beta kicks off next week.  It's fairly entertaining thus far playing a laser cleric.

Been playing this since the headstart, just hit my first weekly 'cap' on stuff.

I'm enjoying it thusfar, how responsive they will be with patching and so on is yet to be seen, and there is some inconsistency on tooltip labeling in the translation that is a little frustrating, some minor keybind stuff (can't rebind shift) - if they can address these and do keep up a patching pace, it could be a fun side game.

There is an infinite amount of stuff to unlock, it reminds me of Marvel Heroes a bit in that way.

This is the thing I enjoy most about the game. I always liked the FFX sphere grid and PoE skill web, etc and this is that taken to an even more ludicrous extent. I sort of question just how satisfying it's going to be in the long run though considering all of the content is constantly scaling up to meet you. As such, unlocking another x more stats is practically meaningless, outside of the prestige you gain possibly unlocking new zones. It would help if there were more build defining abilities available on the Ascension Atlas, but other than picking up new classes, it all seems pretty dry.

That's a concern for the future though. Right now it's fun working towards class unlocks, and that's going to take a long, long time.

BTW, does anyone playing this have a decent pantheon? I'm probably ahead of the curve, but I didn't min/max greatness, like a lot of the hardcores did, so I'm sitting at about 5900 prestige as a gunner.

This game is boring as pretty much all MMORPGs are in 2015. But it's well executed, pretty to look at, and with enough differences from the usual to make it worth a few days/weeks if you are still into the genre.

I downloaded it and played for a week or so it was a little past mediocre.  Graphics are decent, combat you have to at least pay attention.  The class unlocks kinda kept me coming back.

Then they had some sort of server / database error and I couldn't login for like three days straight.  Okay, it's FTP, no big deal.  Then I started getting "you're number 1,145 in queue" messages. Then I would try and login and it would hiccup - dump me out of the login system entirely.

Mildly annoyed - that led me to wading through a gigantic TESO download / install / patch process.  Now I'm playing TESO and really enjoying it.  Thanks Skyforge for pushing me to spend the time and money on trying TESO.

Yeah, I'm pleasantly surprised how much I'm enjoying TESO.  Don't want to thread hijack so maybe I'll post my ingame etc. info over there Yeg.

Anyway re: Skyforge.  Like Falc said, it's a decent game given the current MMO....meta I guess - I didn't mean to come in the thread and full on slam it.  I don't know if the technical issues are ongoing or not.  They probably got resolved.  I just got frustrated after trying to log on unsuccessfully for 4-5 days.  That led me to TESO.  I had the MMO itch and had been casting around for something to play (explains Skyforge) and one of the main reasons I didn't want to give TESO a go was the "only 4 classes" comments.  But after playing a bit I find that isn't really an issue with the way the skill system fleshes out.

I think you have a fair point.  As I get deeper into cloud computing, I find my tolerance for service interruptions to be lessening since there isn't much excuse to have them if you pick the right place to deploy your systems.

TESO is so much better, without a doubt. I've been saying good things about it for almost two years. Unfortunately, it's boring too. It's just a matter of weeks.

They probably got resolved.

They did.

On the TESO front, I found it one of the worst MMO's with a budget I've played, only behind Wildstar in recent history that I can think of.  It's main sin was that it was terribly boring and never actually got me engaged in the world.  I tried 3 times and gave up, one of which was the free weekend a few months back.  Skyforge's story is terrible and so is it's voice acting, but I find the gameplay fairly engaging and mostly distilled down to bite sized chunks.  I'm sure much like Tera, I'll get bored of that eventually.

For TESO, I advise trying the adventuring minigame when you get tired of inventory management. :oh_i_see:

It seems to cater to OCD collection freaks.  Combat is sorta poopy.

..what are you talking about?
What adventuring minigame?
I spent some time exploring delves...killing some named mini-boss in wilds...following the bland main plot and got somewhat underwhelmed by the promised 'variety of playstyles' available.

Pro tip: This game sucks on first person. Absolutely no excuse to recommend FP view at all.

I think he's refering to the mini-game where you walk around a big world and kill lots of shit over and over again, since the main part of the game is obviously managing your inventory.

This game suffers from TERA syndrome. The game systems are really neat, the combat is good. (TERA combat was awesome, systems were meh) But the content is fucking awful.

It might be the oddest mmo'ish game I have played. But it has a chainsaw class so it's all good. I also love minion quest minigames. It's not horrid.

Furiously mentioned this, so I downloaded it and played through the tutorial. It is pretty, but feels very soulless and uninspired from the little bit I saw. I may go back and check it out, but I think I am about done with quest/mission based MMOGs. I need a world to wander around in at least.

It has open world areas.  The problem you very quickly run in to is that you have to repeat the same dungeons over and over to advance.

The style is rough, the grind is not very well concealed and unlike warframe the mechanics of play are not inherently fun or fluid. But then, there's not a lot of competition.

Title: Re: Skyforge aka In Russia game grind you

I run into the occasional lost cause of a squad, but the vast majority run just fine. However the 5 man group missions are much bigger crap shoot.  I know I'll run into the same fatigue I had with repeating missions I had in similar games like Dragon's Nest and Vindictus but for now I'm content to grind. If they lowered the time to kill on bosses by 20-25% though, that would help. You have the mechanics down so you're not gonna die, so let's speed things up a bit.

What class are you playing? The game needs some major balance patching (and the first waves of that are already in the russian version). If you think things take too long to kill, just play a sledgehammer build kinetic. I solo squad bosses in about 20 seconds top. Grouping with other people for squads just slows things down.

Honestly, I feel the weekly cap system helps prevent the burn out I usually get from games of this style. It tells me that it's time to play something else for a while, and  it's also necessary to keep everyone in the same sort of "level" range, considering this has no level cap. The only time I've really gotten a burn out feeling is when I was trying to compete seriously in the mechanoid operations rankings.

Primarily paladin, with lightbinder second. Have just recently gotten all the kinetic skills but my chapels are geared to tanking so my sledgehammering is not all that it could be. Working my way over to knight then planning on berserker, alchemst.

Sometimes in squads bosses and some crusher (shield) mobs seem to take forever to kill. The giant eel boss in the monastery, some of the naiads in Thais temple. Ugh, the squad pounds on them forever while no one's health drops.
