I'm slightly curious. Disney though... Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: HaemishM on October 10, 2014, 09:46:40 AM The Wizard of Oz with jetpacks and Clooney? :oh_i_see:
Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: Lakov_Sanite on October 10, 2014, 09:48:00 AM Nothing about this looks good.
Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: jgsugden on October 11, 2014, 08:57:02 AM Conceptually, I'm intrigued. There was a vision of the present in our past that never came to be, and turning that into a present fantasy story is intriguing. I do not like Clooney, generally, and the girl in it was a trainwreck the times I've seen her in past stuff... Call me intrigued, but not optimistic.
Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: Merusk on October 11, 2014, 09:57:22 AM Yeah it's a great concept. It was better when it was William Gibson's The Gernsback Continuum
Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: Nevermore on October 11, 2014, 12:43:34 PM "Featuring a screenplay by “Lost” writer and co-creator Damon Lindelof"
Full stop. Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: HaemishM on October 13, 2014, 09:48:30 AM Ok, yep that killed it for me.
Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: Abagadro on October 13, 2014, 07:28:03 PM Brad Bird though.
Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: Ruvaldt on October 13, 2014, 09:51:16 PM Brad Bird though. Now I'm interested. I rewatch the Family Dog episode of Amazing Stories nearly every year. The Incredibles is also awesome. Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: murdoc on October 14, 2014, 07:09:39 AM Brad Bird though. The only reason I am interested in this. Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: Furiously on March 12, 2015, 03:54:48 PM https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0sH0__SpV88 (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0sH0__SpV88)
Iron Giant and Incredibles director, and House... Looks fun from the trailer. (Edit: Thanks whoever, I'm dumb.) Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: Khaldun on March 13, 2015, 01:19:06 PM Brad Bird is an instant sell for me. He has never done a bad movie, and most of his stuff really works beautifully for me.
Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: Riggswolfe on March 16, 2015, 07:18:26 AM Brad Bird is a good director. However, Damn Lindledof is the king of interesting concepts with no payoff and smart people doing incredibly stupid things. (Prometheus anyone?) This movie won't be any different. Thank you Nevermore for saving me from wasting some money.
Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: Ironwood on March 16, 2015, 07:44:32 AM I don't understand the concept here at all.
Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: Nebu on March 16, 2015, 10:14:12 AM A teen has the key to fixing the future... sounds like typical Disney to me.
Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: schild on March 16, 2015, 12:51:57 PM I want to see this.
Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: Surlyboi on March 17, 2015, 09:07:25 PM I want to as well but... Lindleof...
Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: lamaros on March 17, 2015, 11:36:51 PM The trailer is crap, but Lindleof films are fun, so I might watch.
Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: angry.bob on March 26, 2015, 09:46:03 AM but Lindleof films are fun In the same way that genital stimulation until you're just about ready to climax only to have the other person stop and start washing dishes is fun. The first time it happens you figure it's a little disappointing but it was great until the end. After the sixth time you'd rather not even bother getting started and have a nap or a sandwich. Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: Ironwood on March 26, 2015, 10:07:05 AM Dishes need washed mate.
Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: lamaros on March 26, 2015, 11:29:02 PM Dishes need washed mate. I said films not TV series. Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: shiznitz on May 28, 2015, 11:16:03 AM No one saw this?
Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: sickrubik on May 28, 2015, 11:20:42 AM IT seemed largely in the "meh" category. I'm waiting for digital/bluray.
Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: Merusk on May 28, 2015, 01:42:15 PM Nothing about it or the multiple ways it's been sold* intrigued me.
* First it was a mystery sci-fi thriller, then a sci-fi coming of age story. Now it's a sci-fi action movie, if the commercials I saw last week were accurate. Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: Hammond on May 28, 2015, 03:10:27 PM I was dragged to it and it was just ok and personally I wished I had waited on netflix or blu-ray. There were a few parts special effects wise that were ok but the overall story was pretty meh.
Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: Velorath on May 28, 2015, 04:16:18 PM No one saw this? Just due to work, not out of any sort of interest in it. Felt pretty dull to me. Would imagine it's a bit slow-paced for kids also. Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: HaemishM on May 28, 2015, 06:01:00 PM None of the trailers made me remotely interested in it. Brad Bird being involved is the only thing that makes me interested but not enough to go to the movies for it.
Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: Furiously on May 29, 2015, 02:22:15 PM I think it's interesting the number of people claiming:
1. This is Hollywood taking a risk. 2. Numbers go to show Hollywood shouldn't take risks. I think it's more about poor scripts and directors. And Mad Max is about the ultimate risk I've seen Hollywood take. Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: HaemishM on May 29, 2015, 02:23:44 PM Nothing I've seen in the trailers for Tomorrowland make me think "WOW, what a risk!" It looks like a bog standard, feel-good, by-the-numbers young adult sci-fi action movie to me.
Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: Margalis on May 29, 2015, 02:37:04 PM I saw the early teasers / trailers and have no idea what the movie is about or why I would want to watch it.
I still don't know anything about the film other than it exists and it's based on some Disney thing. Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: Merusk on June 01, 2015, 06:30:22 PM Wow did this ever bomb. Even with the marketing push behind it it's still behind budget by almost 60 million worldwide. It barely eeked past Mad Max this week, with it, PP2 and Max earning 14 mil each.
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=1952.htm Ow. Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: Ironwood on June 02, 2015, 01:55:04 AM That's because
I saw the early teasers / trailers and have no idea what the movie is about or why I would want to watch it. I still don't know anything about the film other than it exists and it's based on some Disney thing. Seriously. I have no idea if I want to see it and nor does anyone else I know. Beyond George Clooney droolers, what's the draw ? We genuinely have no idea. Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: Raph on June 02, 2015, 10:32:54 AM These days in Hollywood risk is defined thus:
Low-risk: re-using a popular IP based on something bombastic from your childhood. Medium-risk: re-using a popular IP that isn't from your childhood. High-risk: re-using an old, not well known IP. Insane risk: new IP that is "inspired by" something bombastic from your childhood. Too risky to contemplate: new IP that isn't bombastic. Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: jgsugden on June 02, 2015, 10:48:46 AM Their marketing sucked. They tried to preserve the surprise, hoping that the anticipation of what it might be would create a viral frenzy... that never materialized. They needed a trailer that explained the premise 6 months ago and then a splashy trailer a month before release that was full of amazing special effects... Instead they have a girl running in a field...
Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: Khaldun on June 02, 2015, 10:54:27 AM What makes me more nervous, Bird notwithstanding, are reports from folks I know who say the film is really, really message-driven to a fault. I generally don't like to be lectured by a film period (even if I agree with the lecture) but I especially don't like it when those streams cross over with "big summer entertainment film".
Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: jgsugden on June 02, 2015, 11:41:40 AM Wait... George Clooney is associated with something that uses a club to hit you with the message? I can't see that ever happening...
Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: Margalis on June 03, 2015, 12:15:41 AM Yeah, apparently Bird and Lindelof wanted to keep the plot a big secret because...who the fuck knows. They didn't even want people to write about scenes in the trailer, despite the fact that they were, you know, in the trailer.
And as far as I can tell the movie doesn't have any crazy twist or startling plot revelation that could be ruined. Seems like Bird and Lindelof are just bonkers and up their own asses. Now the secret will never be spoiled because nobody saw the movie. Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: Soulflame on June 10, 2015, 07:53:21 PM Not going to lie, the first trailer made me think it was some futuristic Oz story. Girl in wheat field turns around and sees the Emerald City. With jetpacks.
Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: Evildrider on June 10, 2015, 08:02:11 PM Word is that this will be a 140 mil loss for Disney.
Title: Re: Tomorrowland (2015) Post by: pxib on June 11, 2015, 10:12:13 AM Not going to lie, the first trailer made me think it was some futuristic Oz story. Girl in wheat field turns around and sees the Emerald City. With jetpacks. Huh. That has potential, and the entire Baum run of Oz books is in the public domain. It's a lot easier to avoid copyright claims from the 1939 film if you avoid anything that looks like that version of Oz.I'd watch it. |
