Title: Utopia (UK)
Post by: DraconianOne on October 09, 2014, 12:42:30 PM
First off, this is entirely unrelated to the US reality TV show. No, really - this Utopia is a very weird conspiracy thriller drama thing. Overview from wikipedia says:

Quote
The story follows a small group of people who find themselves in possession of the manuscript sequel of a cult graphic novel called The Utopia Experiments which is rumoured to have predicted the worst disasters of the last century. This leads them to be targeted by an organisation known as The Network, which they must avoid to survive. Using the manuscript, they must uncover the meaning hidden in its pages before the disasters depicted become reality.

That doesn't quite give a sense of how acerbic and off beat the show is and it's also funny in a very twisted way. The visuals and soundtrack are awesome. Season 1 is currently on Netflix UK and Season 2 is only available on the godawful 4OD so US folks may not be able to watch.

This is the only trailer I can find: http://www.channel4.com/programmes/utopia/videos/trailers/watch-s1-on-4od (http://www.channel4.com/programmes/utopia/videos/trailers/watch-s1-on-4od)

EDIT: Probably the best fan trailer that doesn't give major plot points away (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMNW5yygH08).

This really is pretty good.  I watched half of the first season on my laptop and stopped because I hate watching films on little screens.  Thanks for letting us know it's on Netflix now.  I'll start it up again.  Now that I have a desk top with a proper monitor, I'll probably watch the second season, too.  I like Alexandra Roach.  She was so good in Hunderby.  I actually only watched that series because Julian Barrat narrated it.  I love him.  I wish they'd bring back The Mighty Boosh.  Or Unnatural Acts!  I ADORED that series!  I looked up The Mighty Boosh dvd set and it's way expensive.  Bummer.  I don't think you can get Unnatural Acts on dvd.  Another bummer.

Okay.  I rambled.  Sorry.  But at least I gave you guys who enjoy British comedy troops some good recommends!   LOOK AT THEM SHINE! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7YX_aA0j98)

I watched the season premier of Walking Dead last night (which included canabalism, brainings, people being butchered, etc) and nothing in it really bothered me at all. I watched the first three or four episodes of Utopia and it gave me nightmares.

It's amazing how much more horrific things are when set in an ordinary setting.

This isn't on Netflix US but it is on Netflix UK, so I'm watching it there via proxy.  So far, it gets better and better.  Now that I have a bigger monitor and not some stupid 14 inch piece of shit laptop, it's great.  I'm loving this show but it's freaking me out. The first season is also on channel 4, but OMG, the adverts!  Having said that, UK adverts are much easier to sit through than US ones.  By the way, if you have Netflix US, your login will work on Netflix UK, too.  Just in case you stay in the same county all the time people didn't know that.

Unfortunately they've recently announced that it's been cancelled so no Season 3. This is because the discerning public appears to prefer watching "Made in Chelsea" and "Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners".

 :heartbreak:

That's because the Public are fucking morons.

I haven't watched this yet, I'll wait till I can box-set binge.

Watched the first episode of this the other day. Was epic. Had nightmares. Will have to watch the rest of it alone, my wife couldn't handle it.

I'm in the middle of the second series and I wish there would be a third.  I like it a lot.

It's true what you say, Draconian.  It seems Britain is every bit as hooked on trash TV as the US.  It's pathetic.
