Title: Colbert Report
Post by: Nevermore on April 10, 2014, 12:22:45 PM
So with Stephen Colbert replacing Letterman (http://www.cbsnews.com/news/stephen-colbert-to-replace-david-letterman-on-late-show/), that pretty much spells the end of the Colbert Report at the end of the year it would seem.  He's said he won't be bringing the satirical right-wing character he plays on the Report with him so that's going to leave quite a void behind.

The report has been around for what, 10 years now? It had a great run and I don't even think I'd want it going on forever.

That's one of the few things that might get me to watch a late night talk show. I probably won't but I do like Colbert. Not sure how he'll do playing it "straight."

This is very sad news.  I enjoy the Colbert Report.  I doubt I'd watch the late night show (or whatever it's called.)

FWIW, the woman that started that didn't really want Colbert cancelled. She just wanted to start a dialogue about racism and the co-opting thereof. Of course, not all of the people that jumped on the bandwagon got that.

I know.  It's just amazing how quickly the Malkins of the world will jump on it.

She was being massively mocked yesterday on twitter.

There was a really long interview with Colbert I caught on NPR. I think it's the only time I've heard him completely out of character and based on that, I think he'll be a big surprise to people as a general talk show host. I suspect that unless Comedy owns it, they'll break out the Report character from time to time as a sketch though.

Looking forward to Colbert trying some broader comedy. Time to outgrow this narrow left wing political satire gimmick. I think he will do well.

This is perfect.  Now they can make the Daily Show an hour long and wtfpwn all of the late-night network shows in one foul swoop.  At least, if I was CC that's precisely what I'd do.

I honestly have no idea what they're going to do (obv) but I would think they'd want to put something completely different in it's place (go back to shit shows like crank yankers) because honestly anything news-typey is going to be unfairly compared to Colbert.  Let Colbert fade a bit in peoples' minds and then slide another Daily Show graduate in the slot down the road.

If he's playing it "straight", will he be reverting to "Col - bert" instead of the now famous pronunciation "Col - bare"?

Title: Re: Colbert Report
Post by: Ingmar on April 17, 2014, 05:52:41 PM
Unlikely, that's a matter of branding rather than character at this point.

Title: Re: Colbert Report
Post by: Lakov_Sanite on April 17, 2014, 06:55:13 PM
It's been col-bare ever since the daily show which was years before the report so doubtful it will change now.  It's a stage name as much as Charlie Sheen is not Charlie Estevez.

Carlos Irwin Estevez.

Yeah, at this point Steven Col-bare is his brand, and there's no point in being Stephen Colbert except in private.  Steven Col-bare is worth millions.

I doubt Mr. Leibowitz is called Stuart at home by anyone but his mother, when she's mad at him.

Wikipedia says he's gone by the current pronunciation since college.

Title: Re: Colbert Report
Post by: Hayduke on April 19, 2014, 05:02:00 PM
The pronunciation has never struck me as odd, but then I'm from Louisiana where the name Hebert (pronounced "a bear") is very common.  But yeah, he definitely used that pronunciation back on TDS for nearly a decade (remember he started at TDS before Stewart did).

Really I never liked Colbert Report that much compared to TDS and I hope Comedy Central doesn't rush to replace it with something similar too fast.

Yes, just think of Louis XIV's finance minister, Jean-Baptiste Colbert, the guy who 'invented' mercantilism.

The joke was never how he pronounced his name, but that he would pronounce "Report" the same way.

And the Sport Report segment!

Torch is being passed to Larry Wilmore. I am not unhappy with this.

Um.

Ok.

Title: Re: Colbert Report
Post by: Lakov_Sanite on May 10, 2014, 06:18:38 AM
The minority report, really? Wilmore is very funny, I hope he tackles more than race issues which unfortunately is all he does on the daily show.

Title: Re: Colbert Report
Post by: Segoris on May 10, 2014, 09:41:02 AM
Yeah, I haven't really seen him do much outside of playing the minority card bit. I probably would have been more excited for John Hodgman getting a show to play the conservative counter to the Daily Show, or with a new direction for the show under Sam Bee's or Aasif Mandvi's lead.

I know I'll still give it a go and it will probably be okay, but I'm not expecting much at this point.

Title: Re: Colbert Report
Post by: Malakili on May 10, 2014, 09:46:52 AM
It could be good.  I would also like Sam Bee to have a show.

Title: Re: Colbert Report
Post by: HaemishM on May 10, 2014, 07:13:07 PM
Larry Wilmore will have a solid show I think. The key is going to be the writers - can they work beyond the "race card" humor (which is still pretty goddamn funny). I think he'll do fine.

Title: Re: Colbert Report
Post by: Tannhauser on May 11, 2014, 11:11:04 AM
Wilmore?  All I've ever seen him do is race stuff.  This looks like a diversity hire.

What?

Title: Re: Colbert Report
Post by: MahrinSkel on May 11, 2014, 12:03:25 PM
I've seen Wilmore doing standup, he has more range than just racial humor.  That said, if this is 'just' a Comedy Central version of Totally Biased, they could do worse.

Title: Re: Colbert Report
Post by: Lakov_Sanite on May 11, 2014, 12:07:41 PM
Well either way I'm sure it will be funny.  Comedy central is certainly lacking in racial humor with the exception being Key and Peele who are as much pop culture as racial in their comedy.  However I would like to see Wilmore stretch his comedy chops beyond race just because that's all I've seen him do.

I'm ok with this, Larry Wilmore always impressed me. I honestly find John Hodgman's shtick nigh-unwatchable, he's my least favourite of the contributors.

I'm also really on board with the current cast of correspondents for the Daily Show. After some initially stiff deliveries, Al Madrigal and Jessica Williams are killing it, and I like the way Jordan Klepper is shaping up already.

Jordan is my new favorite on that show. He is what Harland Williams should have been.

Wilmore definitely makes me laugh more reliably than Hodgeman.

Title: Re: Colbert Report
Post by: Lakov_Sanite on May 13, 2014, 03:11:01 PM
Hodgeman only does the one character even in his stand up special(which is atrocious) but the character itself(apologist for the rich) was good originally but it's gotten so outlandish and over the top as to be cringeworthy.

Title: Re: Colbert Report

I like Wilmore, but I kind of wish it was Wyatt Cenac coming back to do it.

I like Hodgman.

Yeah, sometimes the plutocrat bit doesn't work, but I find it to be more hit than miss. YMMV.

I thought the LA Clipper bit was funny, though I suspect might cast that as insensitive or something.

The new guy (Jordan Klepper?) is getting better -- he was awful in the first couple of bits.

But Aasiv Mandiv is my favorite presently (if he's still there).

Very good last episode.  Going to miss it, I've enjoyed it more than the daily show for a while now.  Him playing a mockery of an ultra right wing pundit allowed him to giving biting social commentary that nobody else could, while remaining absolutely hilarious.

I'm really not sure how well he's going to do out of character, but god knows he's earned what ever path he wants to take, even if he becomes shitty because of it.
